Over the last 5 years, I've used NAS devices from IOMega, Buffalo Technologies, and now, Synology. Prior to Synology, I've had mixed results, with reasonable GUI's and performance. This purchase was made to replace a failing Buffalo Tech. NAS, and so now I have three Synology NAS devices in my network.

After using another Synology device for over a year, I can confidently assert that it has the best GUI I've ever seen in a NAS. Easy to use, powerful, and designed to meet a variety of tasks.

Setup was simple, taking only about 30 minutes from start to ready (that includes adding users, setting up additional plugins, etc.). There are wizards for performing mosts tasks; however, some degree of technical literacy is required to use any but the simplest functionality.

I use the drive in a mostly-Apple environment to:
- serve as a TimeMachine destination
- host media files as a DLNA server, and with my Roku streaming player (which has a Synology-specific plugin)
- host pictures for my personal cloud, sharing across the internet with others
- FTP server for transferring larger files

I use my devices in a mirrored RAID configuration, and the drives are all the same capacity. I've no experience with more complex drive configurations, so I cannot speak to that part of the system.

The primary interface has a "health/status" window, for quickly seeing the status of the unit. There is an email alert mechanism for informing you if/when the device has issues that require attending.

Additional functionality of the base unit is done using plugins, which are obtained using the web interface.

This particular unit has 2 bays, 2 network interfaces, and a USB port. I've used the USB port for transferring my media from the failed Buffalo drive. Unfortunately, the Synology OS doesn't recognize HFS/HFS+ formatted drives. The web-GUI has an icon which appears when the USB drive is inserted, which is also used to "eject/unmount" the drive prior to removal.

As with any review, there must be a PROS/CONS list, so here it is:

Pros:
- Excellent GUI. This is HUGE! A lot of effort went in to this, and it shows.
- Easy setup and use.
- Many plugins for a wide variety of features
- Email notification of drive issues
- Roku plugin for easy access from a Roku device
- iOS app for access to photos

Cons:
- No HFS+ support for USB drives

SUMMARY:

If you are in the market for a NAS, you've found the best manufacturer around. This 2-bay device is great and I recommend it.

1. To go beyond basics you MUST know and understand PORT FORWARDING, RAID, and ROUTER.
2. Disks were fine for 7 months. Then 1 got corrupted (MODEST USE). Tech Support immediately sent a replacement. The replacement was a refurbished drive.
3. TECH SUPPORT extremely slow and unhelpful. Online documentation and knowledge base inadequate. Seems to be a cut & paste job done poorly.
4. Still waiting to see if they will replace the entire unit but so far Customer Support has not responded.
5. Would NOT recommend based on my experience.

Comments about Synology DS214se DiskStation Personal NAS Server:

I use this NAS as a media server for my network. It also serves as storage for my publishing archive. This way I was able to take out the 5 drives that sat in my tower case. I do like that its dead quiet and it is easy to setup. It runs a little on the slow side initially, but once you've initially populated the volume there are no issues. If I was using this for multiple machines at once I would have gotten a more robust unit, but this is perfect for personal use. Remember, you get what you pay for. Streams 1080p video with no noticeable loss of framerate or drawrate. I've seen some folks complain about the fact that the case has to be opened with tools. If you need something that can be opened without tools, then buy something that can be opened without tools.

I wanted to backup my library of more than 45,000 photos with some redundant safeguards, while also freeing up much needed room on my 1 TB flash drive on my laptop.

After talking with the pros at B&H, they tailored this Synology product to me even though I came to them thinking I would want something else.

I have been very happy with my purchase. The Synology help desk was very informative and the directions to set everything up were fairly easy.

Comments about Synology DS214se DiskStation Personal NAS Server:

This is a good NAS server for a newbie like me. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but you really get what you pay for. The nice thing is that it really does most of the setup and work on its own without you having to do much. The apps for smartphones are nice, but the photo app is kind of buggy to me as not all photos come out clearly, which is strange.

Currently this NAS is being used as an on-site image back up and Git Repository.

      Pros:
Easy set up almost literal plug and play
Setting up users and permissions took about 3-5 minutes per user (20 in total). This setup could have been scripted for faster setup via SSH.

      Cons:
Can't rename volumes, they are all Volume 1, 2, 3... etc.

Comments about Synology DS214se DiskStation Personal NAS Server:

Setup was relatively easy with the synology agent software, however, I didn't have a quick start guide or anything to get started. Once you go to the support site, however, things become pretty clear. After setting up the drives, formatting them, and creating the shares, it just works. I also have the 410j 4 drive NAS and I find that this 2 drive version is actually faster when creating thumbnails of photos and videos. Maybe it's because of the new software but generally, it feels zippier. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it and I'll continue to buy Synology for my storage needs.

Comments about Synology DS214se DiskStation Personal NAS Server:

I consider myself an advanced computer user with limited network skills. This was relatively easy to get up and running but some of the finer details I am still monkeying with. So far it's stable with no crashing it hardware glitches. Using a Asus router and 2 red WD drives. Only compliant so far is the CPU is rather weak/slow for phot and video conversions.

Used to store photos, music, videos, business documents, perosnal documents and backups of systems. Installed with 2-2TB drives from WD. Easy install and setup, easy software configuration through intuitive wizards. I would like to see better capabilities in the Music/Media server like an equalizer as well as app integration into one app as opposed to multiple addps for Files, Music, Video, etc. Otherwise overall quality seems excellent. VERY happy so far!!

This is my 4th NAS owned and by far the best. Nice Interface, lots of user friendly apps less complicated to maintain, and great interface for sharing with friends and family. Fast considering the specs. I will have giving 5 stars cos it deserves it.

Cons: can not add additional memory, Needs more backup features or options

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a home NAS synology is the way to go, at least till i find one that will surpass it. Synology should make all models memory upgrade-able considering you can add up to 8TB of HD.
