Let me say from the beginning, this is not a camera for everyone. As background let me say I grew up with and still own the Nikon F, F2, FE, FA, and F4s. In digital I have been through the D200, D300, D700, and currently use the D800E.

In comparison to the latest digital offerings, (D4/D800), this camera does not achieve the same "adjust everything on-the-fly with your eye to the viewfinder" ergonomics we have become accustomed to.

What it does do, is give you instantaneous information on how the camera is setup when you pick it up, and an intuitive and tactile feedback on what you are doing with the camera as you use it.

I own 7 or 8 Ais or AF-D type lenses and all are a joy to use on the Df. The smoothness of the shutter is the best I have ever felt. Yes, the grip is a bit small compared to a D4, and the front command dial is obstructed by the camera strap post (so switch that function to the rear dial!), but no camera can be everything to everyone.

What the Df does do is take terrific photos--the best white balance, dynamic range, and color without extra effort of any camera I have ever used. High ISO results that are nothing short of eye-opening. In addition, the Df does not elicit the same scary BIG CAMERA reaction when used for candids with a small lens.

In conclusion, when I am leaving the house and it is time to pick up a camera, most often I reach for the Df. That doesn't mean mean I'm done with the D800E, but it does mean I now use it for more specialized purposes. I hope this feedback will help you decide if this camera is for you too.

Recommended to friends on the condition that they try out the camera before buying.
The thing that I really like about this camera is the great image quality and low light performance.
But I am not so fond of the retro style controls. For me they just get in the way of my shooting style. It's like trying to drive a modern car with Model "T" controls.
Heavy lenses do not fare well used on the Df. The camera feels unbalanced with big zooms; however the primes do feel great.
The grip is too small for my hands making the camera feel like it going to fall out of my hands.
The placement of the camera strap ears on the front of the camera causes interference problems when using the front command dial with the strap installed.
The thing that disappoints me the most is the price; I think I paid too much for what the camera offers. You're getting the D4's sensor, which is worth something, but if the retro controls do not mean anything to you then all you're really getting is a is a D610 with the D4's sensor, no video, a single card slot, and no built in flash. For the price that this camera costs it is missing a lot of features that should have been included such as: a 51 point AF system, dual card slots, interchangeable focusing screen, a 10 pin connector, 1/8000 max shutter speed, and an eye piece shutter.
I now feel that I should have rented the camera first before I bought it since it so different than other cameras.
So my emotions are mixed on my purchase, this is the first camera that ever bought that I really regret buying.
Bottom Line: I feel that the Df has a proffessional featured price for a consumer featured camera.

The best Nikon camera I have ever owned

    By WMM42

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I have been using Nikon cameras for more than 30 years. My favorite film camera was the F3. My first digital Nikon was the D1X. My favorite digital Nikon until the Df was my D700. I really missed the look and feel of my Nikon film cameras. The Df is the best of both worlds. The mechanical controls are exactly where I expect them to be. The digital menu of the Df is identical to my D700. There is no problem switching between the two cameras. I have little interested in video. I have my D700 for video. The Df seems much lighter than my D700. The fact that I can use all of my old film camera lenses on the Df is a huge benefit. I give the Df five stars. I can recommend it without reservation.

This is a very solid and well engineered camera. It's versatility in low light conditions is exceptional. It's flexibility in accepting almost any lens and switching smoothly from auto to manual and back is very much appreciated. I'd sum it all up by simply saying, "WOW!"

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

I won't write a lengthy review, but I will say that the sensor quality is obvious. Colors are rich, image has great detail, and high ISO performance is truly amazing. I would like to have just a bit more of a grip, much like that of the D600 that I've been using, but I have no other complaint about this camera. The dials take a few uses to get accustomed to, and, after that, prove to be a convenient setup. Great job, Nikon.

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

I am in love with this camera and the kit lens!I had been looking for quite some time to upgrade from my trusty Nikon D200. I still enjoy my D200 but was hoping to find a camera that was easier to travel with (less bulky) and that took advantage of technological advances to yield improved image quality over my D200. The Df caught my eye because of the high-end image processor and, admittedly, the retro styling with so many manual controls. I hesitated for several months because of the love/hate reviews about this camera. I finally decided to take the leap just before a big trip with extended family. I was fully prepared to return the camera if it didn't really impress me - but it's a keeper! It performed very well on hikes, indoors, and at family activities while 17 of us were on vacation together.

Because the controls are all clearly marked and easy to use, I found myself using manual mode more often than ever before and turning out better photos as a result. Other internet reviews had said the controls were awkwardly placed or difficult to use, especially the aperture dial, but I didn't find that to be the case. I could set the controls for a nature shot and then quickly reset them as I turned to catch some action when I heard the kids excited about something else. I really enjoy using the manual controls, much more so than changing settings through menus. It's also faster for me to control with the manual controls versus menus.

I didn't really need this lens, but it seemed to be a good value based on good reviews for the lens itself. I'm glad I ordered this lens! It produces gorgeous photos with great light quality. I used it indoors and outdoors, in shadows and bright sunlight, and it performed wonderfully. This camera and lens combination also proved to be quite good for travel. It's substantial but not bulky or too heavy. I was a little worried about not having a zoom lens, but I didn't miss any shots with this lens. I actually ended up liking the activity of moving my body to get the shot I wanted.

The only way this camera disappointed is that the eyepiece popped off somewhere on a hiking trail while I was using the eyepiece cover. I would have hoped that it was more secure than that, but the replacement is inexpensive. When I called B&H to find the replacement, the salesperson took a couple of tries to figure out what camera I had because "that one just sort of fizzled out". That was even more disappointing! There are probably several potential purchasers who have been scared off by the vastly different (love/hate) reviews online, like I was. After putting the camera through its paces, my only regret is that I waited so long to order it!

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

As an advanced amateur with most photographs taken on overseas travel, I wanted to upgrade my D2x to a full frame camera. Not wanting video or 11 fps or the battery weight/bulk to support it, I am delighted with the new Df: all of the necessary Nikon digital sophistication in a small, light weight package. The superb retro styling is an added plus. Bravo to Nikon!

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

This camera is very good; good low light; I personally love the manual controls. The only downside is that the autofocus is slow; and if your resolution obsessed then you better off with the 800e / 810. This camera is substantially smaller then the d800/e so it fits easier in the bag; around the neck etc. If auto focus speed is not a concern this is highly recommended.

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

I love this camera! At first, it felt a little odd in my hands, because I was used to heavier and bulkier DSLRs (such as the 800). It took a little getting used to, but now I prefer the feel of my DF over my 800. I have rather small hands, and this camera is just a nice fit for me.

At the beginning, I really struggled with the front control dial on the camera. What a terrible design and placement! Once I took the time to customize the dials so that I could mostly avoid using the front dial, shooting became almost effortless. This camera performs superbly in low light without a flash or strobe, so I have used it extensively for school programs in poorly lit rooms. I'm looking forward to using it for my next birth photography!

During my last portrait session, I took the time to do a little side-by-side comparison between my 800 and my DF. While the DF produced very acceptable images (beautiful, in fact), I felt that the 800 somehow managed to produce slightly superior images. It's hard to even pinpoint what it was, but it was definitely visible to my eye. In settings with less available light, the DF will definitely be my first choice.

I have to say that I did my share of research before I decided to purchase this camera. The option to be able to use all my older lenses was a big deciding factor in getting it.
I know some people are mad about the DF not having video but I have a GOPRO and a D5100 that does video as well and I just wanted a great low light camera for doing street photography.

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I am a professional photogapher, shooting mostly weddings and events and I love this camera! I cannot believe the ease of shooting and the quick response of the Nikon Df. Fantastic full frame and great to crop and bring the close-ups even closer. I shoot my weddings in extremely low light with no flash and this camera is exactly what I have been waiting for. Beautiful wedding shots. It did not take long at all to get used to the knobs and I can use it all day without tiring. No cons for me; I love everything about it!

This is my first FX digital camera and I cannot imagine ever buying another. I'm petite so I'm always concerned about camera weight; this camera is easy to carry around all day. I don't know if I can even specify what I love about this camera, but I just love it!

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

Right out of the box I could tell I was going to love this camera. It feels solid in my larger hands. I like the weight of it. Not too heavy and not too light. The control knobs are not hard to change and twist around. They feel solid and turn nicely. The knob that changes the manual, app priority, and shutter priority does feel a bit too chintzy and the battery door has to be squeezed a bit to close. It feels cheap as well, being plastic. The viewfinder is rather large which is good for people who wear glasses like myself. I was thinking I would need to buy an eye cup, but no I dont need it. I can hold it two or three inches from my face and I can still see clearly. I noticed that the outer palm of my right hand started to hurt while holding it for longer periods of time with a longer lens attached. The grip needs to be a bit larger or the camera needs to be taller. maybe with a hand strap it might not be so bad. I am in love and I am not regretting the price at all. I'm an amature concert junkie and the photos are outstanding in low light. I can easily shoot with an f stop of 4 or higher a shutter speed at 200 and ISO at 3600 and have minimal noise! Im a happy camper!

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

My DF arrived just days before a trip to D.C., so I was excited to try it out while on vacation. I definitely appreciated the lighter weight of this camera (as compared to my 800), and also the smaller number of pixels. I spent a couple of days of my trip fooling with the front wheel (who was the one that designed that mess?!), before I cracked open my manual to see if I could reconfigure the dials. What a improvement it made to be able to use the main command wheel (on the back of the camera) for aperture adjustments, rather than the default setting (front dial). I used the top dial to adjust shutter speeds, and the combination seemed to work pretty well for me.

Besides the inefficient and uncomfortable front dial, my only other main complaint is the metering. I was really struggling to get a reliable reading at least half of the time. Photos were consistently overexposed, and often I had to take multiple pictures before I could get the exposure correct. I'm not sure if my camera needs adjustment (I've never encountered this problem with all of the Nikons that I have used), or if it is a result of the sensor design, user error, or what, but I do plan on calling B&H and discussing the problem with them.

I bought this with the kit lens, and although it seems sharp enough, it feels cheap. The focusing ring is stiff, and is not pleasing to the touch.

Photo quality is very nice, and I was very impressed with the DF's low-light performance. I do agree with other reviewers who question the use of the 39-point AF system, as opposed to the 51-point system. I really wish that Nikon would have opted to use the 51-point system. Focusing with my 800 (with the 51 point system) feels better to me, and goes quicker. For the price it's rather disappointing to find these weaknesses in design.

Overall, I would recommend this camera, but it is probably not the camera for everyone. I do think that it is a nice complement to my 800, which I will continue to use. At the high price point, I was almost tempted to buy another 800 for my backup, but the lighter weight was really wooing me, as well as the high ISO performance. I'm looking forward to using it at my next birth photography, where I can count on encountering poor lighting for the majority of the shoot!

I am in love with this camera. Before this, I shot with film and every so often my D200 from college. Since I mostly shoot for myself (a few pieces in galleries, but I'm mostly an advanced-ish hobbiest), I had been happy with my set-up but had been looking idly for a digital camera with (much) better low light capability. I got this for myself for my birthday this year. The photos are lovely. I love that it works with all my film lenses. I find the dials really conveniently located. I love that it's so tiny for a DSLR and so light and easy to carry around. I love how it looks and feels. I don't care about video or gargantuan megapixel count, and so this is the camera for me.

Comments about Df DSLR Camera with 50mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

Many reviews refer to the emotional aspect to buying this camera and I fall into this category. I think it's beautiful. I liked the black but it was not retro enough so silver it is! Since I had recently purchased the D800, it was not an easy sell to my wife. Bottom line: it is ours (really hers) and used an anniversary as a rationalization for yet another camera.

Rather than rehash other reviews, I will emphasize what really stands out for me.

                            1. A direct low light high iso camparison with the D800 and a Fuji X100 showed the Df the winner. All done in RAW. The D800, incidentally, set to the DX mode (cutting the RAW file size in half) was visually lower in noise than the FX mode (full 36 mlx) and it was still 18 mpx.

                            2. I switched out the 50mm lens with the Nikkor AF 2D 35mm. By switching to DX and using the gray frame mode, I can easily compose photos as if there were a 50 (technically 52) mm lens even though this cuts the mpx by two. It's like having two prime lenses in one. Not for everyone, but I like it! Can do this with the D800 as well and I suppose all full frame Nikons.

                            3. Although the 35mm lens is more practical (and cooler looking IMHO) than the 50mm AF-S model that came with the camera, my tests showed that at a full open wide aperture, the new 50mm remained ultra-sharp. Sadly, the 35mm 2D softened slightly although better at even 2.2 f stop. So don't hesitate to buy the camera with its kit 50mm lens. If focuses fast and is always sharp. - Andy

I'd reccomend it to the photographer enthusiast or to someone with spare cash.-I believe this camera probably has the best iso performance of any camera I've ever known, because of this, it has great handholding strength, without the need of support. It's got low-light strength you have to see to believe. It'll give you a lot of nice-size stills too, because of the superd battery life.I however didn't keep my DF because of personal trends ands some qurks with the camera that impacted my shooting style. The best thing about B&H as a company is their customer support. I usually order from them because of peace of mind.
