I bought the Pegasus2 R4 to use as primary image and data storage for my new 2013 Mac Pro. As a semi-professional photographer who uses a Nikon D800, I need storage that is fast and vast.
My Mac Pro has not been delivered yet so I have been testing the Pegasus on my 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro. Blackmagic speed tests show the Pegasus2 R4 is as fast or faster than the internal SSD in my MacBook Pro. Wow!
It's too early to say anything about reliability and durability but, so far everything looks great.

bought two units, one unit worked as advertised, the other unit had problems with shutting down. emailed technical support at Promise. Their response would be great for a programmer or an IT professional but not for me. Time is money and I don't have time to fix Promise's problems. If it doesn't work out of the box send me one that does.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

Great little RAID storage unit. I bought my first one in early 2015 and have not had a single problem with it. Bought this second one a month ago and same fast setup and flawless operation.

TB2 speeds are very fast. I'm editing huge 5k R3D projects in FCPX without proxys off this unit and I very rarely feel any slowdowns.

Setup is literally plug it in and wait for an hour for it to initialize, and then it's ready to use. With RAID5 you get 6TB usable from the 8TB of included drive space.

B&H shipping is very quick as usual. I think I received it in 2 days, even though it said 5 - 7 days expected delivery.

    Worth the money.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

I've purchased my third unit about two months ago. The Pegasus RAID's are the best I've ever used. I've had only two drives fail in four years. But have never lost any material because of the RAID 5 setup. Once I replaced the bad drive, it re-built itself and I never lost any material. Promise customer service has been great to work with too. It's the only RAID I will buy.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

I use this product for video editing. Most of my videos are recorded in 1080i @ 60fps or 1080p @ 24fps depending on what the end use is for the video.

I have been editing video all my life and have used every kind of hard drive imaginable from cheap portable disks to high capacity LaCie firewire drives.

I am planning to make the jump to 4k soon. As it is I knew that my projects could be done faster if I had a faster hard drive. My computer is fast, but my external hard drives have their limitations in speed. I was using a portable USB 3.0 drive which I thought was fast, but knew this was still where the bottle neck was.

I have always wanted a RAID enclosure like this, but haven't had the money until now. There are a lot of options out there and I did a fair amount of shopping and reading reviews (I hope you find this review helpful). I am a brand name kind of guy and there are only a few brand names I trust. For me it came down to the LaCie 5 big thunderbolt and this Promise Pegasus2 R4.

The things I was looking for in a hard drive enclosure were both speed and redundancy. Speed because I don't want my external hard drive to slow me down while editing and redundancy because if one drive fails there is a way to recover the data. If you don't know RAID options give you both more speed (because you are using more than one hard drive simultaneously to have 1 logical drive) and data protection (redundancy meaning each hard drive is backed up to another hard drive**). I need more speed and I cannot loose data.

RAID 5 gives you the best of both worlds giving you both speed and redundancy. You must have at least 3 drives to run RAID 5, but the more the better.

For me the reason for the promise pegasus over the lacie was speed. In real world tests on youtube of people who have both systems the pegasus was a little bit faster. I am comparing the promise pegasus 8TB to the lacie 10TB which were in my price range. If you have a different price range you can consider higher capacities (which also affects speed) of both systems the pegasus and lacie. The other selling point for me was the user interface of the pegasus. The pegasus hard drive user interface is pretty and easy to use and understand. The lacie had bad reviews on it's interface. This should affect you too much because you shouldn't look at that thing but once. Once it's set up you don't really need to look at the hard drive controller software.... But it was still a small factor for me.

Down to the nitty gritty which is what I wanted in other reviews, but didn't get.
Real world disk speed tests using the black magic speed test. The system comes set up with HFS drives, in RAID 5, 1MB strip (1024kb strip) already set up, configured and ready to go. The first time you turn it on it is going to "synchronize" which takes a long time. I left it going all night. But you don't have to do anything else to it. This is exactly how I wanted my system, so I didn't have to do anything at all.

With the settings as they come out of the box my pegasus is doing 500+ MB/s read and 550+ write. It starts out writing at about 600MB/s and slowly comes down to about 540MB/s. Safely say it does 500MB/s write and 500MB/s read and those are solid numbers. No exaggerating. That is 4 gigabit per second which is the fastest I've ever seen from a 4 bay RAID enclosure. Please make note that we are in RAID 5 which means it is doing redundancy on the fly. Also note the difference between megabyte, megabit, gigabyte, gigabit, MB/s, Mb/s, GB/s, Gb/s. This is doing 4 gb/s out of the theoretical 20gb/s of thunderbolt.

At this price point it is an insane deal! And don't forget that you data is protected!

I would like to thank Apple and Intel for thunderbolt and Promise Technologies for making this possible <3

First off excellent shipment by B&H. Everything arrived safely, perfectly packaged and shipped incredibly fast. A+++

This device is AWESOME. If you need redundant storage and have a Mac with Thunderbolt its a no brainer. This device comes formatted as OS X Journaled and setup as a RAID 5 out of the box. I plugged it in and was ready to go in minutes, it does take SEVERAL hours to initialize the device but you can still use it but the performance isn't 100%. After the initialization was done this device is screaming fast, quiet and couldn't be happier.

Plus the price on B&H is HANDS DOWN better than anyone else. YES this unit was Brand new!

Upgraded from a 4tb G Raid array running Raid 5 over firewire 800... Huge difference in speed and a bit less expensive. I can now easily edit large .psb files without having to put them on my computer. I wish it had a way top lock it up though, like as kensington lock.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

The unit for the past year has not been an issue. Very quite and fast. Reason for one star less is, I was told the 16TB is considerably faster after I purchased the unit. The reviews did not mention that and I just purchased based on my size need. Probably would have gotten the larger size if I had known prior and being the unit has been effortless, now I could see using it for while and the extra cost and size would be spread out. But you need to also consider how much data you want on one array. Sometimes its best to buy 2 8TB instead of 1-16TB to lessen data risk. With thunderbolt you can daisy chain and I probably would. I use it with a MacPro thunderbolt connection and its been not an issue. There was a update for firmware once and it installed without an issue. I called in to tech support and cannot complain but not totally impressed (reason for the one star less also). When I get a chance I plan to obtain an extra drive in case one fails and I have to swap, and before the drive availability may be discontinued (have to have the same brand and type for swapability) and as I don't want to return the unit or drive with my data on it. Another comment, I sleep the MP often and the Pegasus also goes into sleep mode as well and awakens without an issue. I would buy this again.

Plug and Play set up as it's configured (RAID 5), albeit with a wait time for the raid to sync with my computer. The raid goes to sleep with my Mac. The fan isn't as noisy to me as others claim. I went a step further and tucked it into my desk drawer with an open back and I don't hear a thing, and my desktop is not cluttered. I'm really happy with the ease of set up and use, looks to be well built, and works well so far. The lightning bolt cable that comes with it is meant for desktop use, and you'll need a longer cable if you wish to store it elsewhere. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. Thanks BH for the great service!

I've been using this for 3 months as the external drive for my MacPro and it has performed flawlessly connected using Thunderbolt 2. It is quiet, manages power well, and was completely seamless . It did not require formatting or fussing at all. Data speeds are also very good. I use it for storing all my data files as well as the referenced photos for Aperture. After 3 months the reliability is good. There is no downside.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

It does the job. It works as advertise. It's fast and a must for any New 2013 Mac Pro user. Using the software is ok. I'm new to setting up my own RAID so the software was tricky. I called Promise and their technical support is a joke. They are rude and are of no help. I had to beg them to help walk me through the steps. (I wanted the unit in a RAID 0. it ships as a RAID5)
I have a corner desk so the unit is off to my left. I wouldn't call it quiet or loud. You can definitely hear the fan going.

I purchased this unit in anticipation of my new Mac Pro. I have already transferred my data to it and first impressions suggest it is a superb performer. It is very quiet and very fast. The build is solid and look sleek. It is heavier than I imagined. It is to be seen how it performs over the longer haul.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

I use this for media storage for working video projects and as storage for other mission critical data. The speed is impressive with TB2 averaging over 700MB/sec write and 500MB/sec read. My internal SSD in the MacBook runs around 900MB/sec, so this RAID array is very close to the PCIe SSD. At RAID 5 redundancy is good, but I still backup anyway. Highly recommended.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

I'm understanding Thunderbolt more now and I wanted a large raid 5 drive to store and back up my projects. The more Thunderbolt drives you add to the chain, the faster your computer goes and hence your workflow. I have a small Thunderbolt drive and I added this one to it. I can really see the difference. I think this is the only option available for editing video right now. Just plug it in and go (on an iMac). Actually, you have to wait about an hour or so for the drives to sync up or somthing, but then you're ready to go. I also just added a 12 TB Pegasus 2 to the chain and now I'm really whizzing along. I don't even hear it at all. Of course, I'm a little deaf in the high ends. Yes, I recommend it.

Comments about Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array:

This is now attached to a 15" MB pro with retina screen whilst awaiting a new Mac Pro.

On first installing everything worked just fine in its default RAID 5 format. However on subsequent restarts the computer no longer recognised the drive - big problem. Not very much help from Promise!

I figured out the best was to reformat the array using Mac's Disk Utility (lost all the data that I had taken hours to transfer to the array). I then changed the array to a RAID 0 set up (which I wanted anyhow) and everything has been OK since.

On shut down and restart the drive behaves as it should. It is lightning fast but not as quiet as hoped - high pitched hum (probably fan noise)

I use this as my main storage for my images on a 2013 Mac Pro. The speed is nothing short of fantastic. It was a snap to set up. And it is just as quiet as the new Mac Pro -- really enjoying the silence. Definitely worth it.

Service from B&H was excellent as always.

(This replaced a Drobo that would not wake up properly when it went to sleep. It is now back on the iMac and works fine on that platform.)
