Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

About 80% of the pictures I take are spontaneous indoor shots with less than optimal lighting. I wanted a camera that gets fairly sharp pictures without a flash, which often causes unwanted shadows or alters the color. This camera and lens combination is perfect for me and I am pleasantly surprised that there is so little blur when the subject is in motion. I have mixed feelings about the touch-screen monitor. I have to be careful not to touch it when shooting. I would have preferred regular rechargeable batteries to the ones required.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

I purchased the Panasonic Lumix GX7 as an addition to my DSLR set up. I noticed that the larger size of the DSLR caused me to leave it at home on numerous occasions. I hate missing an opportunity to shoot, so I began looking at micro 4/3 cameras. The GX7 is what I landed on, and I couldn't be happier.

The GX7 provides near DSLR image quality in a much smaller package. It's tight, but I can pocket carry this camera even with the 20mm f/1.7 lens attached. Replace that lens with the 15mm body cap lens from Olympus and it fits comfortably. I actually enjoy carrying this around, which I can't say about my DSLR.

There are many great qualities offered by the GX7, but I'll limit this review to a few of my favorites. The in-body image stabilization is nice. I haven't compared it directly with the 5-axis system offered by Olympus, but I found that I was able to get an extra few stops of performance. This made it much more enjoyable when shooting the moon and other dark landscapes without a tripod. The controls all feel very rugged. In fact, the whole camera feels rugged. I'm amazed at how great it feels despite its small size. The included flash is wonderful, specifically because you can manually bounce it off of a ceiling for more natural lighting. The menu system is easy to navigate, and you'll have it down after a day or so. Focus peaking makes manual focus a breeze and the large screen makes automatic focus just as simple. This camera has a lot to offer!

Why should you get this kit rather than the other? Because the 20mm f/1.7 is phenomenal. I've found this focal length (40mm full frame equivalent) to be incredibly flexible. I can quickly move from a portrait to a low-light candid to a landscape. There are other lenses that will be "best in class" in some of these areas, but this performs surprisingly well across the spectrum. It's the king when it comes to low light. The 1.7 aperture lets you capture even the darkest moments. The lens is incredibly sharp, quick to focus, and surprisingly small. I'm convinced that for most people, this is the best lens to start with.

Are there cons? A few, but you'll forget about them easily. There are a number of limitations imposed by Panasonic which I wasn't expecting. In manual mode you cannot have the camera automatically select your ISO. I've always found this helpful on my DSLR when I want to specify a shutter speed and aperture while letting the camera make small adjustments to the ISO as my lighting changes. I also found it frustrating that you cannot customize your bracketing. You have some robust options, but you can't have it take three shots (-2, 0, +2). In order to achieve this you have to take 5 shots at -2, -1, 0, +1, +2). Not a terrible option, but for handheld HDR that's extra time for motion blur or camera shake. Also take note that the viewfinder protrudes out from the camera body, which make it a little more awkward to carry in a pocket. The battery life leaves some to be desired, but it's probably unfair to compare this to my Canon 60D. I'd recommend ordering a few additional batteries.

If you're jumping into the world of mirrorless, micro 4/3 cameras then the GX7 would be a great place to start. I'll happily be keeping this as a sidearm to the larger DSLR body and I expect to get plenty of mileage out of it in years to come. I can't assure that it will meet all of your expectations, but it has certainly exceeded mine.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

Before this package was available, I purchased the GX7 with the stock zoom lens, and paired it up with the f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens I had previously purchased with my GF1. Without this lens, the camera is a 4/5, but with it it's 5/5, higher if I could rate it any higher.

This lens makes this camera so much better:
        1. With a pancake lens, it's just small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, and is not intimidating to your subjects
        2. Light sensitivity is excellent due to large aperture, combined with in-body image stabilization (which is new to Panasonic).
        3. It turns on instantly and is ready to shoot - perfect for quick shooting in tight quarters or in the city

Buyers should consider a second lens (telephoto), but I found with my GF1 that I use this f/1.7 lens 90% of the time and rarely switch to the zoom.
