I use this product as a direct replacement of my H4n which died after 5 years of use. I do sound recording of all sorts but most recently on set sound and boom micing. The H4n was great for this as I could strap it right to my boom pole and watch the meters while I boomed. Perfect for the one-man operation I am. A major problem I had was the fact that you couldn't run phantom power on my boom mic on channel one while using channel 2 to record my wireless lav. well you could but it would eat through a set of AA's in about 10 minutes. With the new H5, you can specifically set which channel has the phantom power on and now I have no problems with ridiculously fast battery drain. I also purchased the EXH-6 dual input capsule and can now mix and record 3 different wireless lavs and my boom mic into four separate tracks on one device. The new analog gain dials are a much needed addition as you can adjust gain on the fly with out the noisy clicking interfering with your clean audio sound. Also welcomed was the line out port which takes away the need for the -15db line attenuation cable I had to use previously. The physical size of this is just a bit smaller than the H4n but it has a nice rubbery grip all around it which feels great in hand.I won't go too much into sound quality. Both H5 and the H4n have great sound quality for the amateur/indy scene that most of us are using it for. If you want that perfect sound for your feature length then you should be investing in something by Sound Devices. If you cannot get quality, usable sound out of the H5 or H4n then you are doing something wrong.

      I didn't buy this unit from B&H - I wish I had.
The build quality is great it's all rubberised plastic so if it drops you're fairly okay..with the exception of the X/Y capsule.
I'm not a fan of the interchangeable capsules, I'd just never want to use other zoom digital mics with this tbh I'm only interested in the X/Y and the XLR inputs to use my own mics.

For video with a great shotgun mic (MKH416) I had no hiss - seriously none it sounded fantastic, I recorded an interview in a studio in London and it sounds perfect.
For audio with my favourite condenser mic (Shure SM7B) the Zoom H5 is unusable, you have to crank the record input on the H5 up to "9" of 10 and it introduces so much noise hiss it's terrible, ashame the SM7B requires so much gain.
So I don't think this a tool for a musician more of a tool for a DSLR shooter that owns a good quality shotgun mic, you'd probably get away with a Rode NTG3 as an entry point but the other Rode Shotguns NTG1 and NTG2 shouldn't be considered they'll sound bad with the H5 just like they did with the H4n.

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I use this for recording interviews for radio stories and it's fantastic. The design is much simpler and much more efficient than the Tascam DR-100 mkII, the internal gains are also much better.

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I purchased the H5 after using an H4n, drawn by the interchangeable microphone cartridges. So far, however, I've been perfectly happy with the stock x-y set, though have missed the 120 degree setting on the H4n once or twice. I've also been using it as a USB audio interface for my laptop and it worked with Logic Pro X with zero setup. Audio quality is great and the construction is sturdy, if a little bulky.

              Makes life so much easier!

              By Jon

              from Riverside

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I sold my zoom H4N to get this, and ever since it has made life so much easier! The battery indicator still gives inaccurate battery life, but at the end of its 2-ish hours of battery life, it will save the file it's currently recording before shutting down. Other things such as a dedicated line out port, ability to set either just one or both xlr ports to have phantom power, and physical dials for changing levels just makes recording that much less stressful. The ONLY thing that I find worse on this unit is the jog wheel on the side (for navigating the menu) which is a bit harder to press than the one on the h4n. The preamp is still not the best (it's a tad better than the h4n), but the zoom products have never been about getting the absolute best audio, but more so just getting an all in one recorder that's simple and versatile. I am so so happy with this unit.

Zoom H5 Review by Brent Black

              By Brent

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

If you're a musician or a videographer in any way, shape or form, you should get this product without hesitation. A great video needs great audio and this is the tool to get that great audio at a cheep price. A video review would do the H5 far more justice than a few words but put simply, the quality of this product side by side with the Rode doesn't compare. The Rode video mic is great for run and gun but the zoom is pretty damn compact. Once you take the detachable mic off the top, it's about the size of the iPod one. The navigation of the system'a sophware is strait forward and user friendly. I haven't found anything about the product so far that I don't like other than the free memory card that comes with it only being 3 gigs. Perfect for recording live shows and almost any type of video production. You won't be let down by this one.

Very easy to use. Records L and R with mics on top, and then channel 1 and 2 separate via XLR on bottom. Cannot record L and R independently with the included head attachment. Different head allows for 4 separate channel recording. Transferred wav files to computer - very easy. This was recommended to me by B&H employee when I called. So glad he suggested it. Was going to get another brand, but he did not recommend it.

I wish this was available before the H6 was released as this likely would have been a better solution for the majority of my needs. This is a great recorder for DSLR-style shooting, or for long format audio recording. The swappable mics are great and having the ability to change to 4-channel XLR recording almost eliminats the need for me to hang onto the H6 for that reason, but working out the numbers it does not make sense to sell the H6 and pickup a second one of these H5's. Hands down better than the H4.

I love the Zoom H5. I'm using it as an audio interface to record my voice with a dynamic mic (Sennheiser e835). I run the Zoom H5 directly into my computer on USB bus power (no batteries or SD card needed) and record to Camtasia. The H5 preamps are strong enough for the Sennheiser, even though it's a dynamic mic, and the results sound very good to my ear. Much lower noise than my Tascam DR-40 (which can't be used as an audio interface anyway, unlike the Zoom H5) and my voice sounds clearer and more natural with the Zoom H5.

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I am using this primarily at the moment for recording a voice-over for a no budget kiosk-delivery-type nature doc. Compared to other zooms I have owned, pre-amps are a big improvement. Going too high on the gain will rise the noise floor though, so it is best to keep below about 7. I have only used the X/Y capsule and the shotgun capsule which produce usable audio. It will be fun to bring out the Rode NTG-8 for some serious wildsound and see how it performs then. Proximity effect is fairly substantial with both of these mics which means that careful placement and monitoring of the levels is important. Generally, if you are careful you should be able to bring in a clean signal for post with this system, but it is necessary to monitor carefully. Battery life with integrated mics is impressive. It is difficult to go past this for the price.

When I first took the Zoom H5 out of the included hard shell case all I could say is "WOW" this thing feel fantastic in your hand. They gave it a slight curve to improve ergonomics compared to the standard square shape of most recorders. The build quality is Amazing. This thing feels very solid. It's mostly made of plastic that is covered in a soft touch rubber type coating that is very nice. The microphone capsule is made out of metal as well as the guard bars over the gain adjustment dials. The Zoom H5 is a recorder that has a very simple design and menu setup that I really like. It's easy to pick up and work with from the start without having to go into the manual to figure out how to do what you want. Zoom really took their time to design the recorder. I love the manual dials to adjust the gain input. They are a huge improvement over other recorders where you have to click buttons. No only is the adjustment silent without "click" noises you can also adjust the levels much faster and you can visually see what you are currently set at. Along with that you also have separate dials for your different inputs. Zoom also added a line output to go along with a headphone jack so you can monitor the audio and output it to your camera at the same time. Another great feature is the ability to input a line level in without a separate line signal adjustment. This is the second recorder to use the new capsule system that allows you to expand the recorder. They have a shotgun mic, extra xlr inputs, and other capsules. Basically this thing rocks! If you want to see more details with full menu/feature walk through along with audio quality tests/comparison check out my video review / comparisons on YouTube. Just search " Zoom H5 Max Yuryev " and it should come up!

This thing works exactly how I want it to. The only thing is that I don't know how to carry it when i'm short staffed and have to record audio myself. But Im not very experienced in such things.

The Pre-amps on this are amazing. Better than the H4N especially for the price.

than the 6 year old H2 this replaced. The "skin" of the H5 is nice (plastic, but soft - if that is possible). Using this digital audio recorder is very intuitive. All the controls on the outside of the H5 are easy to access - one-hand use is definitely possible. The included mic module makes the unit a bit "top heavy", but hand-held balance would not normally be a requirement. The included stereo mic module also has a 3.5mm mic input which works great with my Sennheiser G3 portable wireless base station. The built-in XLR mic connectors are great to support those sorts of mics.Getting to the point of recording something is easy and straightforward. The screen (shows audio levels when recording or menu selection items) was easy to read and use.The 1/4"x20 mounting thread on the back of the H5 is useful for camera/camcorder mounting or use with the "mic clip adapter" that I got with the H2. I actually got a second Zoom "H2 mic clip adapter" because I use them with video lights that would normally be camera mounted.Audio recording option selections allow for good flexibility and the external power using USB rather than a standalone wall wart DC adapter is efficient. The recorded audio reproduction is accurate (for the price). The protective bars over the audio gain controls are functional/useful.And after all the kudos on the feel, usability, functionality, connectivity options and recorded audio quality, it LOOKS cool, too!

The Zoom H5 is a quality instrument, with many advanced capacities above the the 4n.

We put it through the motions in the field at a horse farm; with boom feed in, and output right into the camera for back up.

Then studio under controlled audio conditions.

                                                            The Zoom H5 performed magnificently.
