I use this product as a direct replacement of my H4n which died after 5 years of use. I do sound recording of all sorts but most recently on set sound and boom micing. The H4n was great for this as I could strap it right to my boom pole and watch the meters while I boomed. Perfect for the one-man operation I am. A major problem I had was the fact that you couldn't run phantom power on my boom mic on channel one while using channel 2 to record my wireless lav. well you could but it would eat through a set of AA's in about 10 minutes. With the new H5, you can specifically set which channel has the phantom power on and now I have no problems with ridiculously fast battery drain. I also purchased the EXH-6 dual input capsule and can now mix and record 3 different wireless lavs and my boom mic into four separate tracks on one device. The new analog gain dials are a much needed addition as you can adjust gain on the fly with out the noisy clicking interfering with your clean audio sound. Also welcomed was the line out port which takes away the need for the -15db line attenuation cable I had to use previously. The physical size of this is just a bit smaller than the H4n but it has a nice rubbery grip all around it which feels great in hand.I won't go too much into sound quality. Both H5 and the H4n have great sound quality for the amateur/indy scene that most of us are using it for. If you want that perfect sound for your feature length then you should be investing in something by Sound Devices. If you cannot get quality, usable sound out of the H5 or H4n then you are doing something wrong.

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I used the H% with to external microphone inputs, one from a mixer and another a direct feed, to record presentations at a conference. It all worked well and smoothly. It's easy to use, small and contained, has all the bells and whistles one could want/need. Price is good.

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I had the opportunity to test the H5 at a major rock concert a week ago and am AMAZED at the sound quality. I used the studio limiter setting, low cut filter set to 98hz to cut the noise floor and input setting to about 3. The resulting file is equal in quality to recorded concert CD's produced with huge boom mics and audio mixing equipment.

The H5 comes with Steinberg Wavelab to edit your audio file, 30 day trial. I used Wavelab to adjust the gain levels in several parts as needed and applied a small amount of EQ. The resulting file is amazing. I'm beyond impressed. This is the audio recorder you need. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

Extremely versatile for the price. This unit has the same great pre-amps as the larger and more expensive H6. For the last six months, I followed the great customer reviews (which B & H sent to me) of the Tascam DR-60DmkII which I just noticed on their website is now priced at a great $. However, lacking the two X/Y mics the H5 has, I just never pulled the trigger. Finally, I decided to purchase the Zoom H5 and I LOVE IT. I'm retired and just use for fun, attaching a lav mic to the Zoom for fantastic audio. This unit has a mini jack line out so you can run the audio directly to the line-in audio of your DSLR if your DSLR has one. This would give you a back up scratch track. Also, this recorder will record another back-up -12 db to a separate track if you desire (to cover you for peaks). I could just go on and on. Check out the B & H customer reviews on this fantastic recorder. The battery life is fantastic (two AA alkaline) and if you use rechargeable batteries like I do, the battery life is insanely long. This unit ships with a nice protective case. The mini 2gb SDHC card it ships with is useless. Throw it out and get a 32gb SDHC card instead. It also comes with some audio software which I do not use. To go with this unit, I purchased also from B&H the Countryman EMW wired lav, 10 foot XLM cord, one foot 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord, & shoe adapter to seat the H5 to the top of DSLR.

Perfect for Concert Archival Recordings

By Emma the Production Girl

from New York, NY

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

We're a small music school that needed a better audio recorder for general use. We make archival video recordings of all our performances and our students had been complaining about the sound quality. We bought the H5 and use it as a pickup mic for our camera (connected with a line-to-mic attenuator) and to make hi-def backup audio files recorded to an SDHC card in the device itself. It's been a huge hit after just one concert - the quality is vastly improved, and our students are grateful to be able to use the files for auditions and applications in addition to their personal practice and review.

I am a rank amateur when it comes to audio and purchased this to use for recording the sounds of nature to go with SLR videos. It is over my head and I have a job to learn how to use this recorder. However, the little I have used it so far I believe the qualify is fantastic.

The Zoom H5 has everything necessary to record quality audio. The two 3-pin XLR cables allow for the plugging in of two lavaliere mic packs, two shotgun mics or any combination of two. I bought a little hotshoe attachment so that I could have this device on top of my DSLR while shooting.

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I use my Zoom H5 mostly for recording singing via a karaoke system. I have used Tascom CD recorder, but the Zoom H5 clearly makes recording so much easier and readily accessible for editing at your desktop with your DAW software. You can quickly record your singing session via the x/y microphone or the XLR connections at the bottom of the Zoom H5. Once you have selected input source and adjust the input source volume, simply the record button and you are on your way to make your recording.

You can connect to the headphone connector to listen to the recording, and connect the Zoom H5 to your PC/MAC via the provided USB cable for sound editing and such. It is pretty simple and easy.

I have yet to explore all the features that come with the Zoom H5, but so far I am very impressed with the sound quality that this little recorder is able to capture and produce, and the ease of use to record the audio. I highly recommend this product.

A must-have for any kind of filmmaker

          By Ben Senior

          from Chicago, IL

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I purchased this from B&H about a week ago, and although I haven't been able to field test it yet I'm more than happy with what I've got. If you're torn between getting the H4 or the H5, I recommend the upgrade to the H5, because for the minimal price increase the H5 completely blows the H4 out if the water. The main advantages of the H5 are its multi-track physical audio level knobs, which make quick audio adjustments incredibly easy. The real reason this is so great is that you can adjust your two input levels separately, whereas with the H4 you only had one level adjuster, and it wasn't even a knob.My current setup consists of a Canon Rebel T5i, so the XLR inputs were a huge boost in audio quality. If I choose to do so, I can run four mics at once because of the H5, my two shotgun mics plugged into the XLR ports, a Rode microphone mounted onto the camera itself, and the included stereo mic that comes attached to the recorder. This makes for unparalleled audio options, and altogether shrinks the possibility of having to do ADR later on.The most visible feature of the H5 is its interchangeable heads, consisting of a stereo mic, shotgun mic, and the addition of two more XLR inputs. As my shotgun microphone is overall better quality than the H5 head one, I can see how someone could find use for it. Personally, I'll probably end up purchasing the extra XLR inputs, enabling me to have even more audio sources.Overall, the H5 is a stury, versatile, and invaluable tool for any filmmaker, regardless of their level of professionalism. I highly recommend you pick one up.Oh yeah, B&H did offer me $ to write this review, but it didn't change my opinion of the product in any way.

Comments about Zoom H5 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:

I use this recorder for concert recordings, dance recitals, weddings. The best feature is that it stays in sync with my video camera's audio track, a must for me since many of my events go long without a break. I own other professional named products that do not stay in sync beyond 15 minutes record time. Nicely laid out menu system but do recommend reading the manual. Only complaint is that the 2 AA batteries do not last long when using external microphones that need phantom power. I recommend getting the optional power adapter or even better, get one of those phone/tablet battery power packs (they are under the mobile category) that power via USB cable. This unit, like the H6, needs 5 volts, 1 amp. Look for a power pack with these specs and you will be good to go all day. Again, love the product, very rugged and professional for the price, and it stays in sync!
