I had been looking at several DSLR-type cameras for a few months and I had the oppurtunity to shoot some sample video with 2 or 3 of them but I was unable to get my hands on the GH4. I had never used a M4/3 sensor before and I had concerns on how shallow the depth of focus would be.I was originally planning to wait until Photokina 2014 was over and all of the new cameras were announced, namely 7D mkII. But then, I watched 2 camera reviews. One by Dave Dugdale and the other by Philip Bloom. Both of which produced very in depth reviews on the GH4. I was then able to get a good visual of what the camera could do. Obviously, I was impressed. I then made the choice of not waiting on the "other cameras" to come out because of the overwhelming amount of features that the GH4 has. Some of these features will probably never be put into a prosumer level Canon, focus peaking and zebras not to mention having a cool "party trick" of internal 4K. Nikon may include some of these features but I wouldn't bet on it for a few more years. The camera from the video side of things is phenomenal. The amount of detail that you get from the 50/100/200mbs 1080p footage is outstanding. Then you look at the 4K and cinema 4K(only 24fps) footage and it's like getting glasses for the first time. All of the detail that is captured in the 4K footage is breath taking. Some of the first 4K "test footage" clips that I shot were of a series of soy bean fields that were on rolling hills. At f8 (35mm eq of f16) with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4(50mm f2.8 eq), I was able to see ants crawling on a leaf of a soy bean plant that was approximately 10ft away from the camera! That made me feel very content with my purchase. ;-DThe stills side of the camera is great as well. Although I purchased it primarily for the video capabilities, I have been very pleased with the photographs. My first outing with it as a stills camera was at my daughters birthday party 2 days after it was delivered to me. I was able to get some quality pictures with it. A family member of mine that uses full frame sensor cameras was even impressed by the stills that it produced. The auto focus was/is extremely quick. I have yet to have the GH4 "hunt" for focus. The focus with the 25mm 1.4 lens can still get very shallow (See pic). Its not as shallow as a D810/610 or 5D/6D can get but it very respectable. Again very pleased.I have not tested the low light capabilities of the GH4 yet but I DO KNOW that it is NOT the a7s. I haven't, as of yet, seen anything in the GH4's footage that has me regretting my purchase at all.It took me about an afternoon to get use to the menus and where each feature was located. Now, 2 weeks later, I can just about change the settings blind folded. The camera itself is very user friendly. The EVF is an awesome feature too. Now it doesn't matter how bright the shooting environment is, the EVF is there to save the day. For video, using the EVF gives you another point of contact with the camera that helps you stabilize the it.The battery last forever. All day shooting has finally arrived. I have, on several occasions, shot video for approximately 6+ hours WITHOUT changing the battery. This will definitely benefit the time lapse shooters as well. If they need to hike in to a remote location to shoot, it will allow them to maintain a small, compact gear bag even for an extended multiple day trip.CON:The audio from the Rode Video Mic Pro does produce some nasty digital noise. If you cut out the 14-18khz in the audio EQ in post then its tolerable but still noticeable to trained ears. I believe that Panasonic has recently found a fix and will correct the issue if you send the camera back to them for a few days (Sept 2014). For the footage/shoots that require solid audio, I only use the camera's internal audio for syncing purposes anyways so its not that big of a deal to me.If you are currently considering getting this camera, you need to order today. It has very few limitations/cons compared to the amount of features/pros that it offers.I am currently using the GH4 for b-roll and interview purposes for outdoor industry entertainment as well as video shorts for my church.

I'm the lead producer at a digital agency and we produced more than 100 videos last year on dslr's and REDs.This review is based on two major flaws that will keep me from using this camera as my day-to-day travel camera or integrating it into our digital workflow. I wanted to love it. I pre-ordered it and have used it extensively. If you are someone that keeps their camera in a glass bubble -- then my review is not applicable. However, if you use your camera outside the studio then be warned.First, the weather sealing is non-existent. In just a minor drizzle, water got into the SD card slot, battery compartment (which is open to the sensor area), and the bottom connectors. We've been using Canon's and Nikon's for years and this is at the bottom of the list. Even the consumer grade ($1k range) Canon's are better sealed. After a couple months of use, the main sensor corroded and in Panasonic's terms the camera is a "total loss." This means they offer to sell you a refurbished unit for barely any less then you can buy a new one on B&H.Second, the panasonic service department in Texas is a huge waste of your time. After sending it to them I had to call them every day for multiple weeks just to find out what the status was. They provide you with a dedicated customer service rep -- who will ask for all your contact numbers and then quickly start call screening you to delay the process. I found the only way to access my rep was to start calling in and asking for supervisors -- I eventually landed with the operations manager and he sped up the process. After two months -- I was able to order a replacement camera for their pitiful discount.

Amazing camera in a compact body

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Its basically a shrunken down DSLR. m43 sensor and EVF allows a lightweight camera body and very lightweight high quality lenses. Image quality and dynamic range (highlight/shadow recovery) are simply fantastic. The physical layout is very comfortable with dials and switches in very convenient places. The face recognition focus works wonderfully well. Battery life is also excellent.
The other side of this camera is the video capabilities. IT IS A MONSTER. The 4k quality this things captures is breathtaking and on par with MUCH more expensive systems. The HD is fairy ordinary but OH MY GOD the 4k is stunning (turn down the sharpness and saturation tho) Whats more, its still one of the only cameras that can put out 10bit 4k over the HDMI cable, pair it up with a decent 4k recorder and your compact video production prayers have been answered. It give excellent skin tones (fuji/panasonic are currently the colour kings!) and natural general colour reproduction. I can only imagine what Panasonic bring out next to top this.

I love this camera. I've been watching Panasonic for years through the GH2 and 3. The GH4 is fun to use, and incredibly user friendly. Caleb has a great 4 hour tutorial that I highly recommend. A friend showed me his new Sony and I so prefer the image of the GH4 to it. Panasonic comes through.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I'm used to Canon camera so this Panasonic offering takes a bit to get used to. The M4/3 sensor and lenses kind of throw me, but I'll figure it out. It's not as good in low light as I would like, but the controls and long battery life more than make up for it.

Worst customer service ever

By Thomas

from Niagara Falls, ON

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I have owned my GH4 for about a couple months before I realized the micro-HDMI port was shipped to me broken. I had to pay 120 bucks to get it fixed (should be covered by Panasonic as it seems a lot of owners have this issue.) After 8 months of owning it the "sensor frame" moved in the interior (I never dropped or mishandled the body once). The process to get this fixed has been an incredible arduous and excruciating process. Panasonic explained that the service would be free, so I sent it in for repair. There's no way to check the status of your repair online, so I had to contact the support centre directly and wait a week for a response. After that, I received my camera back and now the device wouldn't let me take a photo. After calling and being on their online support chat for a long time they determined the unit would have to be sent back for repair. After asking for free shipping (due to the fact that they should have had adequate quality control measures in place to prevent sending a fixed camera back BROKEN). They said they would get back to me within 48 hours. Four days later, I gave them a call. They said they would call back. 48 hours later I had to explain my issue over the phone again. Then ANOTHER 48 hours later I finally received my shipping label. Once I sent it in they replied within another week saying the HDMI port had an issue and it would cost $250 to repair, even though my GH4 was under warranty. After pleading to them that I had had NO issue with the HDMI after it had ALREADY BEEN REPAIRED by Panasonic... They argued back that it MUST have been my fault, even though before I sent it in the first time I was having 0 issues. So now, upon paying the astronomical fee, It has been in the shop for weeks. Upon sending them an email asking them what the status of my repair is... I have heard no reply. I have tried contacting them again and it has been another 2 days with no reply. I don't know how this process will end but I am frankly scared to keep my GH4 after I get it back. If this had happened during a work season then I would simply have no camera. Completely unacceptable how terrible their service is, and I will be spreading the word to stay away from Panasonic products.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I use the product everyday for professional video production. It was a great upgrade (and long awaited) from a DSLR - Rebel. The video quality is great and I was pleasantly surprised by the audio quality. Our mic's malfunctioned and we had to go with the audio caught by the included shotgun mic. I was very pleased with the quality

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

If you're looking for Cinema 4K capabilities on a budget, this camera will fit you nicely. Record full 4K 4096x2160 at 24p and UHD 4K 3840x2160 at 30p/24p. The camera records 4K 8 bit @ 4:2:0 chroma subsampling (great for color grading), even better at 1080 (10 bit @ 4:2:2). You are able to record 4K, 10 bit @ 4:2:2, but you have to run it to an external recorder. If you do a lot of green screen composites--you'll want this 4K capability (the more resolution, the easy it is to key); talent with long, flowing hair keys perfectly... Also, if your project export will be 1080, for interviews, shooting 4K is a must. You can get the feeling of a two camera setup, using just this camera. For example, you can have a nice medium shot; and punch in for that emotional close up (200%) without any loss of resolution. A few other nice features are the recording format options available (MOV, MP4, AVCHD). It's nice to have options and what works best for your post workflows. And lets not forget the awesome Variable Frame Rate @ 96fps. The 96fps at 24p is so smooth! Love it. Finally, focal peeking. See exactly what areas in the shot are in focus--a great built in feature!

I also recommend picking up the 64GB Class 10 U3 SD memory cards. This class of memory card is exactly what you need to be sure you're capturing at the fastest rate possible. The max bit rate on the GH4 is 25MB/s and the Class 10 U3 cards are rated at 30MB/s.

The build quality, hands down, is solid. You wont be disappointed. Clearly, you're still reading, do yourself a favor--press ADD TO CART and BUY THIS CAMERA!

Finally got my dream camera

By Mike

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I've been wanting this camera for months after hearing about it from several people I follow online, from friends of mine that have the camera, and after reading other reviews. It's exactly what I needed and the price is right. The one downside is the poor low light performance, but I knew that going into buying it.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

You really can't beat the GH4 at this price point. The camera features and ability to shoot internal 4k make it the unquestionable favorite for DSLR video below $2k.

In addition to production, we use it in a live multi-cam setup using and ATEM and stream to the internet. My only feedback for Panasonic/BlackMagic would be that I wish I could get the ATEM to accept the feed in .mov recording, rather than AVCHD.

Bought the GH4 to utilize the video aspects of the camera and to be able to use some of the Nikon lenses that I have. Manual operation is quit easy and presents no problem with older lenses. The camera does exactly what the specs say. Its easy to learn how to operate the buttons and the results are pleasing to this point. My older TM900 camcorder makes a very good B role for the GH4. I have tried most of the video formats with FCPX and have not had any problems editing the video.

As an amateur or novice at best photographer/videographer, I could not be happier with this somewhat expensive purchase.

I literally use this each week. I am a freelance videographer and a Video Supervisor for the Ontario Hockey League. This thing gets the job done in pretty much any situation I'm in. Great for sports, weddings and music videos for sure. I ended up biting the bullet and getting the $600 metabones speedbooster so I could use this camera with my Canon lenses. Glad I did. This paired with a Tamron 24-70mm L makes some amazing images.

The sharpness on this thing is very impressive. Cannot compete with other Canon products I use such as the 70D. I've gotten a Samyang Cine 1.4 lens with this. That paired with the speedbooster which gives me almost a whole stop of light gives me amazing images in low light situations. I can pretty much see in the dark without grain.

Color grading with this has been phenomenal. All the lows & high ends, blown out or too dark, you can get so much dynamic variation when color correcting and grading if you shoot it with Cine D. Images are very flat.

I could ramble on forever about how great this camera is but I'll just post a link to my work so you can see for yourselves! www.drakewhelton.com

This is my second GH4, needing two matching cameras for video interview shoots. Adding the V-Log software opens the realm of 12-stop capture, and the Atomos Ninja Assassin brought up 4K to 4:2:2 10bit. I bought the interface unit which also provides SDI, full-size HDMI and a better audio section with XLR inputs, too. I like the better zooms from Panasonic - those with constant maximum aperture, and found the 45mm Leica/Panasonic lens to be a fantastic closeup lens. I have had no mechanical problems with either of my GH4 cameras and only wish they were a little bit larger for my hands. The auto-focus could use a little speeding up.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

So I ordered this for personal video projects because I've heard nothing but good things about this camera. Everything about the camera feels great and well made, it's a lighter build but that doesn't sacrifice the quality of how this camera feels. The features are another thing that I absolutely love, from the 4K and Variable Frame Rate to the without lens shooting and zebra stripes this camera covers everything I need.

As for the RODE Mic it also feels very well made and fits on the camera perfectly and doesn't get in the way one bit. However the fasteners that hold the mic in place feel a little loose and I worry that if I leave it in a loose spot in my bag that they could come loose, but it comes with backups so it's really not a big deal. The over all quality of the mic is also very clean and clear so you can't go wrong.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Im still finding my way around all its capabilities but I am very impressed. Coming from a Nikon D70 I am obviously taking a leap forward in quality but a few things about this great Micro Four Thirds camera were even better when I got it than I understood from the reviews.

Using Old high quality glass. I collected Konica SLRs with AR mount lenses many years ago. I had written them off even for eBay selling but the electronic viewfinder, focus peaking and manual focus assist features make using these older lenses a snap. The electronic viewfinder and Histogram make it fast to set manual aperture. The Focus Peaking and Manual Focus Assist make nailing your point of focus quick and easy.

I took some shots with my adapted (cheap adapter) Hexanon 40mm/1.8. Very sharp lens and great shots. Im hunting for an f1.4 and the rare f1.2 versions on eBay now I see the results. I expect I will eventually spring for the Metabones speedbooster so I can use them in even lower light situations which I know has been a concern for other shooters.

The overall weight including lens. Im a pack rat when it comes to my camera bag but the lighter (but still sturdy) body combined with smaller lenses than their equivalents means I can pack a lighter bag but include more options in it

The histogram and zebra patterns are helping me be more aware of the shot I am taking so I can get them most out of it when I tweak it for posting or printing. I am really getting better at shooting because of this. Less wasted shots I have to wade through.

iPhone control and a tripod make it simple for video blogging.

Wifi direct to your laptop folder for shooting where you need to see the full size photos immediately for quality checking. (not for video)

Beautiful variable frame rate to 96 per sec for artistic slow mo video segments.

I could go on but others have covered most other things.
