I've owned this lens for a couple of years now, I've used it in a wide range of situations from street photography, in clubs under very low light to landscape photography under a relentless Australian sun. This lens can produce wonderful images, but it can also punish you with mediocre results if you are not technically proficient. I personally would not recommend shooting landscape on a bright sunny day without a lens hood and below an aperture of f5.6 with any lens and certainly not with this one you, will be sorely disappointed :)
I find that this lens is acceptably sharp in the centre at f1.8 and very sharp in the centre by f4. If you are shooting in low light it's fine at f1.8; a lot of people seem to be complaining about it being soft, well given, it's not razor sharp at this aperture, but on looking at some of my photos I see a very narrow depth of field and I think a lot of people don't realise that perfectly nailing focus is very critical with a lens like this. I'm using this lens on a Canon 5d mk2 with the ef-s focussing screen installed; the standard focussing screen on this camera can only show a depth of field equivalent to f2.8, but the ef-s screen allows me to see exactly what's going on and I can then manually tweak the focus to where I want it to be.
Speaking of focus, the lens is silent and it is very fast, I have no complaints there! I think the Bokeh is quite good, but not great; though given it's a wide angle lens, I'm quite happy with it. The build quality of the lens is pretty good, a cut above the Canon 50mm f1.4. It has a very useful depth of field scale; I often use it to pre-focus, when I'm using this lens for street photography. The manual focus is smooth and all focussing is done internally.
All in all, I find this to be a very useful lens for street, interior and low light photography; it's usable for landscape photography at f8, though the corners never really catch up to the centre in terms of resolution. So if landscape photography is your main aim, I would probably recommend you purchase the new 28mm f2.8 IS instead. As they say, different horses for different courses!

I purchased this lens as a replacement for the wide side of the Tamron 28-75, after I sold the Tamron. Not only did I want to replicate that wide focal length, I wanted something faster indoors for winter shots of my kids, but I do not need L glass for snapshots around the house.

I was very disappointed in the performance of this lens when shooting wide open. It was better at 2.2 and 2.8, but by the time I got to a reasonable level of sharpness, it was no faster than the 28mm 2.8, which sells for less than half the price of this lens.

I ended up returning this lens and getting the Canon 35mm 2.0, and I find the quality of the 35 to be much better than the 28 1.8, and it more closely approximates my 50mm 1.4.

I would not recommend this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I use this lens often and enjoy how fast it is. This is my second one. The first one that I bought 4.5 years ago recently broke (it became loose around the focusing ring). Hoping this new one lasts longer!

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I wanted a wide angle prime and was caught between the 24mm f2.8 and the 28mm f1.8. I decided to go with aperture over focal length. I think I made a good choice. This is a good lens, fast focus, sharp images. So far I am pleased with my choice. Thanks again to B&H for their help and fast delivery.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I bought this lens even though reviews across the internet leaned toward negative. I was in the hopes that it would have the crispness/tack sharp, colorful contrasty images that my 100mm 2.0, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4 would have. Unfortunately not. No comparison whatsoever. The images were incredibly soft, smudgy looking and lacked the powerful color- pop that we see in the other Canon primes. The colors were very very blah. I own a few Canon 'L' lenses. but images produced from the primes I've listed above, to me outshine the sharpness from the 'L' lenses I have, they're just beautiful. I was so hopeful that the 28mm would deliver and find a home in my bag, but it couldn't even come close.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I have used this lens on a Canon 5d Mark II, Canon 6D, and a Sony A7R with adapter. All pictures I took with this lens always turn out great or better than expected. It is tack sharp and on the Sony A7R it shines amazingly! It also works very well on the 6D and the 5D. This is a great lens to travel with, for Landscape, Star lit landscapes also and is a great portrait lens. The Bokeh on this lens is great too! I always have this lens in my bag!

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This lens I find myself using when evening hits or when I want that nice framing that a 28 has.

I really like the low f stop, albeit better a click above and without the noise exhibited in this lens, but the results - you can't complain. It also provides great bokeh, and little aberration or vignetting except at the extremes.

The focus can be a bit slow, but that just makes you a little more thoughtful about dealing with that (e.g., forethought, composition, timing, etc).

I just got this as a replacement for my kit lens that came with the camera, the difference is astounding. My old lens capped out at 4.5 but this baby at 1.8 takes great shots at night.

My only issue is more with my self than the lens, and it's trying to get that depth of field perfect. From using a lens with a lot of wiggle room to this is a stark contrast. But it will make a better photog out of me.

Lately I have so not been impressed with canon glass compared to new market lens's like the sigma art line or zeiss loxia/ batis for emount, but this lens is tride and ture. Great price. Very Sharp. Nice contrast. pretty quick auto focus. I would definitely reccomend this as an easy addition to any kit.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This little lens puts out incredibly sharp images. For not being an L lens, I am very impressed. I needed something light-weight and inconspicuous when shooting events. This does the trick! Autofocus is quick and pretty quiet (will not disturb anyone more than a foot from you... heck, it doesn't disturb me). However, this is not a weather-sealed lens so it will be damaged is exposed to water or excessive dust/dirt/sand. It's cased in plastic so it isn't rugged light an L lens, but it is very light and doesn't take up much room.

This is by far my favorite lens for wide shots. Bringing it down to 1.8 the shots are gorgeous. Not as clear as the 1.2 but thats expected. Great lens for the price

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Before purchasing this lens, I primarily shot with Canon's 50mm and 85mm lenses. I bought this 28mm to have a wider prime to add to the set.

So far I've used this for low-light video and outdoor automotive photography - it's performed very well! I've been impressed with its sharpness and clarity.

This lens provides a nice, different perspective from my others (50, 100). I am able to get so much in every shot, which is especially nice when trying to shoot indoors in the winter. I wluld recommend this lens to others.
