Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Interface Unit:

I purchased this camera for my MFA in Film and was still debating a Sony A7s right up until the VLog firmware update shipped. I am shooting with the GH4, and then applying the Vericam 35 LUT to the VLog footage. The color is stunning and stands out when we share footage in class. I'm sure the Sony's full-frame would offer more range, especially in low-light, but the results I'm getting are wowing classmates with much more expensive gear.

Great camera, can't say the same for the Interface unit

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Interface Unit:

I love the GH4. The image quality, the variable frame rate, the time lapse feature, etc. However, the interface unit stinks. I had nothing but sync issues, and an echo/delay effect that I simply could not get rid of, not to mention the 15lb battery pack you need to lug around, undermines all the advantages of shooting on a small 4k-capable DSLR.

I returned the combo package and got the GH4 with a Beachtek adapter which allows for XLR audio recording.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Interface Unit:

I'm a commercial videographer and filmmaker. I primarily use this project for situations when I want a more polish feel to the video. With the firmware update, the Variable Frame rate option is spectacular - 1/4 speed overcranking at Full HD for a camera of this class is pretty spectacular. Syncro-Scan was an awesome and impressive feature. The OLED monitor is a vast improvement of the previous systems. The build is sturdy and durable, and the dials feel much more significant than previous editions. I use this in tandem with the Atomos Ninja Blade recorder, and I'm super happy with the results. I wish the camera was designed with the YAGH unit in mind. It's awkwardly, yet sturdily attached, and it limits the positioning of the LED. The interfaces are a spectacular addition to the camera, but I wish it was self-powered. The unit will not work without it's own power-supply - a 12V 4-pin XLR. It would work with a variety of V-mount battery options and there are a few other choices, but it just adds to the trouble it takes to get this unit up and running.

The picture coming out of this camera is superb. A lot of power in a small package.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with Interface Unit:

        PROS + CONS

        GH4
        - great image quality (8 bit is limit of in-camera cards)
        - 4K in-camera recording, awesome
        - works as smooth as GH3. Up and running in minutes
        - need new higher speed cards for storage

        INTERFACE UNIT
        - XLR-type power supply and cord not included in kit? Huge oversight

        - Sync problems when using SDI outs and in-camera down-convert when shooting 4K. AV sync is almost useless when camera attempts to down-convert for monitoring HD signal on 2K monitors over SDI. Have not tried HDMI output yet but hoping sync is better with that output.

        - SDI outputs apparently intended to be used more for sending 4K 10-bit image to external recorder. You will spend another $2K - $4k on external recorder + another few thousand on a 4K monitor. Think it over.

        RECOMMENDATION:
        - buy the GH4 and skip the interface unit. It doesn't offer that much value for the cost and will require additional purchases to even become functional. You can monitor HDMI out of the GH4 with mini-connector. However, if you absolutely must have 10-bit image quality, be prepared to drop some coin on an external recorder from AJA or similar. Your 10-bit DSLR rig will be much larger and more cumbersome than the stealthy GH4 which does a great job all by itself.
