I have been shooting with the 7D, 70-200mm 2.8 IS (v.1) and 17-55mm 2.8 IS for close to 4 years so I have become accustom to some pretty good image quality and have been waiting for a compact to hit the market that will give me the flexibility and control of full manual shooting and RAW capture so I don't have to pack 25 pounds back and forth to work just so I can capture that "One" occasional moment on the hour drive each way not to mention some venues where a DSLR and gear may not be welcome or fun to carry around. I swore off all-in-one style cameras in 2007 or 8 and got my 1st 40D because these camera's zoom would die or something else and they seemed like expensive disposable units that would blow the most important captures on a consistent basis. This is a pretty good alternative and I will strive for objectivity here. This is not, (or are most any P&S), good for every type shooting, I will not be shooting sports or birds in flight with the G1, but more on the other demanding scale with lower light, indoors and higher ISOs. This shoots cleaner images at higher ISO's than my 7D which is a big plus and something that I can use in a resturant airport or museum. Now there is a catch here, you may not be happy with the results if you just use the preset "Easy" Auto modes. If your scene does not contain or you are not trying to "freeze" movement, Auto does a nice job and will hold shutter speed down to say... 1/25th second on ISO 8001/20th second on ISO 12501/8th second on ISO 1600 Now while I am impressed my still images are quite crisp at these slow shutter speeds considering my hand is not as steady as it used to be, the camera IS can not compensate for moving subjects like people. To get the best results you will need to use shutter priority or manual for faster shutter speeds like 1/80th for poses and maybe 1/160th and up for candids to get crisp people shots. I was hoping this would do a better job with it's macro setting, but this may be more of my issue working the camera, minimum focus distances and maybe using a tripod, (or not). My 70-200 makes some mighty sharp close-ups especially with extension tubes and this is not a fair comparison of the G1 II to a piece of glass that can still fetch a price close to twice that of the G1 XII The ND filter does help drop the exposure so you can cream the moving water, but because it is not external you have to remember to turn it off so don't run up the ISO unnecessarily on other shots. On my 1st outing I did just that and shot the bike rack below after dark with the ND filter on and likely added a couple extra seconds to the exposure that were not needed. Things I'd like to see improved?... 1st, I like to shoot full manual and could get used to the less fluid setting adjustments, but make the exposure meter easier to see. 2nd, some of the in camera effects are kind of neat on occasion, but give me control to select what I want instead of having to shoot 4 series giving me 6 versions each just to get the 1 effect I'm looking for, Cleaning out the files is such a pain it makes you never want to use it. 3rd and maybe the most important, Canon could have made the High ISO performance a little better. I just got the 6D for an up coming trip to Alaska, (Impressed so far for landscapes), and this technology has been out for close to a couple years now and with competition with Sony and others I'd think they would/could have made this a real butt kicker because one of the reasons I backed off the Sony when I saw the G1 II was coming out was IF you could find low light/high ISO RXII sample images they had an almost over processed heavy handed NR look to them. But as noted earlier, the high ISO noise of the G1 XII is much lower than the 7D. This may not be for everyone and you will get more out of it if you get creative and learn the camera. Then again, I am not familiar with current P&S's on the market so maybe those Auto Folks out there will appreciate the results. And you will need an extra battery if you like to take different angles of a lot of subject. I also thought the option of having a lens hood was nice. I do not do video so no comment there, I just want quality stills. Sample images; The bikes on the rack - I way on my way home after the 1st G1 outing and saw the bike rack along the store wall, it was darker out than it looks. Using a tripod and the 2 second delay, Manual mode - RAW capture - converted and reduced to 25% - no editing. Aperture = 3.9 / ISO 100 / 6 Sec @ 62.5mm (full zoom) & ND filter on...:-/ Tattoo Parlor steps - It was almost dark at a street art fair and the door was open with a dim red light in the stairwell, hand held in Full Auto Mode, jpeg fine capture. Aperture = 3.5 / ISO 1600 / 1/8th second @ 34.9mm (~ 1/2 zoom or 53mm on the 35mm equivalent)

Very good pictures. Have used TV, AP, Auto - all work as you would expect. A bit of a pain to put on electronic viewfinder - not from a difficulty standpoint but simply because you have to stop and do it. Wish I would have waited for the G5X. The only reason I gave this 3 stars is because of the lack of a viewfinder and the necessity to attach an external one.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

I've shot many weddings and have a canon 5d MK2 and some fine L glass. I'm for the most part, retired now but the wife and I take a yearly cruise with the family and I always drag the wedding camera and lens with me for some great memories. However, I'll just be taking my new canon g1x mk2 and its viewfinder with me for family and scenery pictures. I'm totally amazed with this camera and couldn't be happier with IQ. When you add in all the bells and whistles that come with this camera, then that adds up to being a no brainer. Probably the best point and shoot canon has ever produced. I haven't found anything not to like about this beauty. 5 Star rating.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

Needed a new camera on short notice, current one I owned failed.
Did research as well as consulted Consumer Reports who gave high marks but had a lesser model as a first choice.
I opted for this camera and am glad I did. Camera arrived 3 days before I took a 3 week trip to Alaska.
Just shot pictures before our trip to get used to features. All the pictures from the trip came out great as well as a number of HD movies. Would recommend this to anyone looking to jump up a notch from the typical point and shoot cameras.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

I bought this camera to have a lightweight alternative to my Nikon SLR and the usual array of lenses, but wanted the best photo picture quality possible and the possibility of shooting raw. Although the manuals are badly organized and kind of hard to use, I eventually got around to using the camera and yes, with its big sensor and great lenses, it certainly produces very good pictures. But BIG downer is the fact that the raw files (.cr2 format) cannot be read by any of my current photo editors and there is no software available for Mac. After much research on Internet I found out that I had to have the latest Photoshop in order to be able to download a plug in to convert the cr2 files to generic DNG. Even then, Aperture 3.2 showed these dng files with a marked vigneting (reading more it seems that Aperture 3.4 could handle directly the files from the camera, but then upgrading Aperture is not possible any more unless you go to the new App Photos, which only runs on Yosemite). Bottom line: a total hassle to deal with raw files unless your Mac is running on Yosemite with Photos. Another consideration: although the camera has wifi, raw files cannot be sent this way, but this was to be expected. And if you use some of the preset modes on the camera such as fish eye or night scene, the camera takes jpg automatically, not raw. But they are great modes. Last but not least: DO BUY the optional electronic viewfinder. Although expensive, well worth it. It serves for an optimal photographing experience.

Previously only owned DSLRs and I wanted an advanced point and shoot to carry easily on vacations for easy schlepping and this only came close to my requirements. Not a pocket camera if you are looking for one but definitely a small one but quite heavy. Great pictures both outside and inside. Definitely has a lag not as fast as my 6D but cannot compare apples and oranges. The flash is pretty darn good too. The colors are vivid. The wifi is a great plus. Having said that, I'm missing the view finder.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

i believe i will have to second everyone's positive opinions and praises about this camera. i'm no expert photographer, but as a person fairly experienced with electronics, i know a darn good product when i see one. and this is just that. i haven't had much opportunity to really use it to its fullest, but so far from handling the gear and the several pics i've taken and reviewed, the IQ really is breathtaking and i was quite blown-away. and talk about a very sturdy body. i've owned several Powershot models prior to this one, but this can clearly take the cake as the best Powershot model on the market to date.
And the fact that it's made well from Japan should be an indicator that you're in pretty good hands.

a very little caveat to those camera-weight-conscious: as aforementioned with many a reviewer, this camera is no lightweight, literally. i personally don't have a problem with it (in fact, i love the weightiness and build--gives it a more professional, genuine feel to it y'know? hehe), but for a point+shoot device, don't plan on slipping it into a pocket, because you won't be able to, chances are. yeah, it's that hefty.

another itty-bitty gripe, if i may: the battery life, also previously mentioned by many, is not very long. but if that's the price i have to pay for dslr-par pics and serious camera equipment, then it's a sacrifice i am gladly willing to make. :)

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

I got this camera to take on a trip overseas; I wanted something relatively small, portable, with no extra lenses that would require me to carry around a big kit. This fit the bill. And it then some.

I'm still shooting mostly in AUTO, but I've been stunned at the results: elegantly shallow depth-of-field, crisply detailed resolution, and a lens that soaks up light. A professional videographer lugging around his DSLR and tripod on my trip was blown away at what he saw from the G1 Mark II. "I'd love to use this on some of my shoots," he joked, "but unless I come in with a big camera and lenses, no one would take me seriously!" Yet, he confessed, the results from the G1 were continually impressive and professional-looking.

I got mine at B&H after looking at the smaller Sony P&S cameras, and when I asked the salesman why I should pick the Canon, he was blunt: "That sensor is almost the size of a DSLR's," he said. "That, and the longer zoom, means you just can't get anything closer to DSLR in this small a package." I was sold.

Some cons: this thing is built like a tank, and almost weighs as much as one. I have no doubt it's durable, but it's not something you can stuff in a shirt pocket. It's a serious tool. Also, it can be a little fussy when focusing in low light.

But I'm loving it. I'm a happy snapper.

The camera lens is extremely sharp. The saturation is not extreme. The camera has some unusual creative options built in which expand its useability. This set of comments is in direct oppostion to Ed Shaub's review of this product in Shutterbug recently however my comments stand as far as I am concerned.
I purchased the viewfinder but It is not essential. The 270EX flash is not essential but is useful.

This is and awesome camera. Went into NYC today to take pictures. They came out so sharp. I used the flash to fill in shadows and it did the job without me having to hasle with flash exposure compensation. I love the fact that I can pop out the built in flash and angle it up to bounce the flash of the ceiling for portrait shots. The cons are that I cannot put it into my back pocket and it is to easy to hit the buttons in the back and changed settings.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

This is my "always have with me" camera. It is small, yet feels solid, and takes great pictures. There are a few things that I have gotten used to. It is a little slow to auto focus and the battery life on a charge is not great. I always have a charged spare. Like most digital cameras it has more features than anyone will ever use. It records RAW and I can use my Speedlights with it or shoot with my studio lights.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

Was looking to downsize from my Canon t2i. Didn't feel like carrying around a bunch of lenses anymore. G1X mark ii has this great built in lens that's 24-120mm 35mm equivalent. So that's a pretty darn good range, especially considering how light the camera is. In terms of picture quality, I'd say it looks pretty darn identical to my t2i.My two issues with this camera is its lack of a viewfinder and the odd construction on the screen. The screen has this weird pulley system that lets you swivel the screen in a really restricted axis. The canon dslr's have a much better system for their screens.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Digital Camera:

Excellent image quality and fine controls in a rugged camera body makes Canon's G1 X not only a great backup/secondary camera, but the prime choice for a small main camera as well. Finally, Canon included a more sophisticated, responsive and accurate autofocus system. Something that was sorely lacking in their G-series. I miss the pivoting LCD, but do not miss the optical viewfinder, so that's sort of a wash, but the LCD is extremely bright and sharp. I wish only they could extend the optical zoom range beyond moderate zoom.
