I'm not going to try to repeat all the information in all the stats and reviews of the Sony FE 70-200mm F/4 G OSS lens, as DXOmark, SLRGear, DPReview and Photozone have weighed in and many B&H reviewers have also expounded. My experience with it on my Sony A7ii and A7Rii very much agrees with Photozone's appraisal of this lens. I have rated it as 4 stars. But if I could, I would have rated it as 3.75, better than good, but not quite very good. It is indeed, as reviewers have found sharp in the center becoming somewhat softer toward the corners at 200 mm and F/4, but corner softness improves rapidly on stopping down. There is some distortion at all focal lengths; barrel at 70mm and pincushion at longer focal lengths. This is easily correctable in Lightroom. On the plus side, CA seems to be very well controlled, better than the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR which I used to own, and it is well made, and fairly compact, weighing in at about 840 g and 175 mm in length. So it is about the same weight and length as its Nikon counterpart. Filter size is 72mm on the Sony as opposed to 67mm on the Nikon. But the Sony also includes a collar, unlike it's Nikon counterpart, where the collar is optional. However, having owned the Nikon, I can honestly say that the Nikon was a very good to excellent lens and a much sharper and "useable" lens over all. Since I like to do close up photography, the Nikon, with it's maximum magnification of 0.274 was quite versatile in this regard. Not macro, obviously, but very useful to me with some image cropping. The Sony on the other hand has a "stingy" maximum magnification of only 0.13, half that of the Nikon, and it's close up capabilities are virtually nonexistent. I can make up for this by using a Marumi 330 +3 Achromat close up filter, but this is not a satisfying arrangement. So why am I opting for the Sony FE 70-200mm F/4 G OSS? After trading in all of my heavy Nikon equipment in favor of lighter weight, Sony mirrorless full frame cameras and compact lenses [owing to a neck with fused vertebrae and shoulders with bad rotator cuffs] I wanted to add a telephoto lens to my 21mm 28mm, 35mm, 55mm, and 90mm [macro] FE mount primes. What I really wanted was a native FE mount, compact, f/4 200mm prime or 180mm macro, with OSS and autofocus and 1 kg [or less] in weight. But, such lenses don't exist. I also didn't want to wait to buy the new FE 70-200mm F/2.8 GM lens; word on the street is that it will cost $3K+ and it's 3.25 lbs. With my issues, this is unacceptable [and also, in my mind, defeats the purpose of a compact camera system; but I don't want to go off on a rant]. And I don't want to use non-native lenses with adapters. Nevertheless I am working with this lens and getting satisfying results. Consequently, the Sony FE 70-200mm F/4 G OSS was my best option going forward. So, there it is.

I got this lens 6 months ago and it was working fine. Didn't use it that much, all together on 6-7 occasions. Yesterday I took it out from my photo pack pack and it was broken in half!?! I really don't know how this happened. I didn't drop it and it didn't ever fall down. After online research, many similar cases like mine and even new out of the box lens had the same issue.

How it is possible that Sony made this big lens with the plastics connecting two parts?! Visiting Sony repair centre estimated cost is between USD 350-500. This is product should be fully repairable without additional charge, at least during one year warranty.

I am very disappointed with the quality, started to regret switching to Sony!

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I purchased this lense for use with the Sony a6000 and am very pleased with the performance. It's very quick on the autofocus and sharp throughout the zoom range. Colors are Vivid and have the pop you would expect from a professional quality lense. Build is top notch with thick metal construction. Though it seems awkward in size when paired with y a6000, it is an extremely compact package when compared to similar lenses on other platforms. The F4 still gives excellent bokeh, I have no problem with the depth of field. Overall for portraiture the lense seems to punch above its price point. This is an EXCELLANT out door lens.

The lense however is not perfect. The compact size (and lower price) comes at the expense of a lower F-stop. It's set at a minimum F4 throughout the 70-200 range; which in normal and even somewhat dim lighting is not a problem. Low lighting scenarios are noticibly more difficult without a good flash. Also, because of the zoom (particularly on the crop sensor a6000, you do have to step back quite a bit more than you might think as a minimum distance to shoot.

Overall, for an enthusiast photographer I think the lense was worth every penny. If you can stretch the cash, you can buy a better all around zoom than this.

this is an amazing lens, would not change it for anything.

I know the 2.8 G Masters version its coming out but this is an amazing light lens. I do action sports and landscape photography so I barely go down f4.

This lens is portable and the quality is amazing.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This lens is quite good at the shorter focal lengths, but somewhat weaker at 200mm. Compared to a Nikon 85mm prime and the superb Tokina 100 Macro, this lens is about 97% comparable, even wide open. At 200mm, it's not dead sharp, and clearly somewhat behind my 80-200 Nikkor at all stops. Though quite good wide
open, it simply never gets sharper when stopped further down. This has been my experience with Canon lenses as well, including the 11-24, the 40mm pancake, and the 28mm f2.8. all are reasonably sharp, but do not improve when stopped down. Most of my numerous Nikon lenses have substantive abberations wide open, but become brutally sharp two or three stops down. I would prefer it to be more like the Nikon lenses, in that REALLY crisp images can be obtained if stopping down is an option. The image stabilization is superb at very short shutter speeds, but seems to have little or no effect at higher speeds. I can't begin to explain why, but I have found it nearly impossible to get sharp images at 200mm and a hundredth or two hundredth of a second outdoors, either with stabilization, or without. Such conditions require at least a five hundredth, and better yet, thousandth of a second. Here's the goofy part; With stabilization, near perfect sharpness is frequently possible indoors under low light hand held at a fifteenth, twenty fifth, or thirtieth of a second. Even at 200mm ! With forty years professional experience, this behavior is a complete mystery to me. Having only used this lens for a few days, some of its odd behavior may become more comprehensible with time. The lens has overall excellent image quality and micro contrast at all f stops, and aside from being a little mushy at 200mm, is fairly decent there as well.

This lens is an excellent compromise. I own Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II and Canon 300mm f/2.8. This lens is much easier to hold than the Canon lenses. I miss the smooth bokeh I get with the Canon lenses, but enjoy using this lightweight lens that provides good IQ. The new Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 will hopefully equal it's Canon counter, but at the cost of the easy of use for the lens I purchased. I am pleased with my purchase.

I purchased this lens for landscape work.. Focus is a snap in both manual and auto. The images are sharp and the color rendering is beautiful. The lens balances nicely on the A7II body and the tripod foot allows easy rotation which facilitates portrait mode panoramas.

I have had the lens for a couple of weeks and have not found anything about it I don't like..

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I shoot a lot of surf photography and mess around with portraits and landscapes. This lens is very versatile and have had success with most situations when im using this puppy.

Now, i suppose if you can cough up the dough and grab the f/2.8 model, that would be ideal if you shoot indoors a bunch, but with an f stop of 4 and usually shooting on sunny beaches, i dont think its something i need.

Autofocus has been great. im paired up with my sony a6000 and the continuous autofocus makes the shots come up crystal clear.

manual mode is great. zoom ring is silky smooth.

it does weigh more than my other lenses, of course. But i would not deem that as a con.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

As a landscape photographer who has migrated to making images of the 'intimate landscape' this is the perfect lens for my new A7R II camera. Focus is right on and quick.

I love the weight compared to other 70-200mm zoom lenses that i have been carrying around.

The lens hood is first rate and designed to really protect from stray sidelight.

I only wish that Sony would make it in a black finish to match the A7R line of cameras.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

A very nice lens with some excellent features. I have only had the lens for about 3 weeks and used it for landscape and some action shots with my A7MII. Pictures come out crisp and clear. I already had a 24-70 lens that I use all the time and wanted something with a little more focal length when taking images outside and in large areas. Especially like an on off button for image stabilization on the lens and the stop focus button (as i call it) also on the lens to let you manually focus on a certain spot or to stop the camera from constantly changing the auto focus when you have it on. I need a few more months of practice using the lens to really get to know it. Definitely will be a very long term relationship with this lens. I have not had a chance to see how fast the autofocus really is but so far I have not had any issues. I don't hold a timer to my lens just takes shots and see if I like how they come out but so far it seems very quick and responsive. The OSS is excellent with this lens paired up with the A7MII and I get shots that I normally would not get. Have not tried it on my old nex6 yet but sooner or later I will just to see what kind of pictures I get from it.
All in all an excellent lens with functions that can really help you to get the best shots. I recommend Lightroom if you do not already have it for corrections. Some pictures that I would not normally keep have come out really nice once they are fixed in Lightroom
The biggest complaints are that it is bright white so when you are in public it stands out like a sore thumb. It is heavy when attached to the camera, but to be expected with the size but if you are looking for a lighter lens do some more homework before you splurge on this lens.

Beautifully built, strong and solid feel in hand. Dense but not "heavy". OSS really completes the point of capture. Rewarding. Great colors. Very sharp. I'm using on the A6000 and am more than pleased.

Comments about Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I bought this and an a6000 to "dip my toes" into this Sony mirrorless system, why ?? Nikon AF wasn't cutting it and my 50 year old eyes weren't cutting it with the optical viewfinders. Sony's focus peaking, magnification, and SURPRISE, auto-focus THAT WORKS more than it doesn't. My Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 was mostly worthless in "hunting" for focus on the D800 compared to what this f4 lens does on the a6000 and a7ii. "it focuses like a mind reader living 2 seconds in the future". Sure you get some duds but it's great. Here is the clincher. I was shopping for a portrait lens for the a7ii (85 or 105 mm).. anyway this Zoom in the studio for portraits around 105mm at f6.3 is BRILLIANT! I love it. I love it as much as my 150 Hasselblad sonar, or 80mm Hasselblad on a "crop sensor" Leaf Aptus back. Brilliant lens, that does what I had been hopping the Nikons would do at nearly twice the price.
