This Gitzo is perfect for my needs. I was looking for a lightweight four section tripod that packs down relatively small for travel. It also had to be secure enough to support a pro-level DSLR with a 70-200 2.8 lens. I have owned many tripods over the years but nothing compares to the quality of craftsmanship and intelligence of design as this Gitzo carbon fiber.

The only other option I would've considered would be a Really Right Stuff carbon fiber tripod, but they are perpetually backordered, and a bit more expensive than the Gitzo, and in my opinion there's very little difference in the build quality between the two.

The feature set that pushed me towards this particular model, is the ground level set central column. I sometimes need the extra height that the central column allows, without having to sacrifice on the compact size of the tripod. To Gitzo solution works extremely well, and is rocksolid when locked in place. I'm using it with the Acratech GV2 ball head and an RSS quick release clamp.

My previous Gitzo work flawlessly for 12 years and I am only replacing it because this model gives a little bit stronger support for heavier lenses.

My GT3542L was two months old when the center column failed. The previous one I ordered from B&H also failed, but B&H nicely replaced it. The Manfrotto/Gitzo service facility in AZ (CRIS) has had my tripod for 3 weeks. They never acknowledged receipt, gave me a time frame, or communicated with me in any way. I've called them multiple times, and they referred my to Manfrotto in NJ. A ship from Italy (I kid you not), is arriving in one week with the part for my tripod. I think. They couldn't tell me for sure except that a center column for a tripod model # same as mine was arriving in a week. So if that is even FOR my tripod, the CRIS facility will have had my unit for well over a month. Stay away. I am looking into RRS or FLM, and trying to find out now about their service. Nice functionality, horrible quality and terrible customer service.

Comments about Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

Like other reviewers here, I purchased this tripod to go with my RRS BH-55 full-sized ball head. I chose this model over a few of the others with it's size and capabilities, simply because I liked the newer clip design for spreading the legs over the old. I have to say, when I tote this thing around, it's referred to as "the precious", because I love it just that much.

PROS:

Very well made. Attention to detail very high.
Super lightweight (without my ball head on it, especially).
Strong, doesn't wiggle. Will hold it's own.
Fairly compact for what you're getting.

CONS:

I'd say, if you're used to a fast pace environment where your tripod is constantly being moved and adjusted, this might not be the tripod for you. Extending/collapsing the legs at a fast pace is not altogether unheard of, but it takes some work and practice. Also, breaking the tripod in quite a bit. Same goes for the center column. It's made to be strong, sturdy, not move and wiggle when in use, not so much be lightning fast and move with perfect ease while making height adjustments.

Basically, if you're into scenic shots atop a mountain or an occasional family still, this is perfect. If you've got an entire line of kids you're doing school portraits for and each one of them is a different height and time if of the essence, not such a great tripod for it.

Comments about Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I wanted a sturdy tripod to support my 5DS for all sorts of shooting, especially macro, yet light enough to pack into the back country. Well, this is the ticket, light yet incredibly sturdy. Well worth the cost.

Comments about Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I am a graphic designer who uses the Mountaineer Series 3 (long) tripod for studio photography and also for for landscape photography in the NJ Pine Barrens. Rock solid, and much taller than me (if I need to get high) in the studio, the tripod, even with a Sirui K-40X 54mm Ballhead is easily carried for miles through brush and pinelands trails. The legs are stiff and poke through brush and at pond edge to provide stable support. My one gripe is the tripod foot is rubber only, and they do slip on some on moss or mud. So I ordered a set of Oben OB1004 Metal Spikes (non-Gitzo) from B & H, and I am waiting for them to arrive, hopefully the threads will match the Mountaineer. I also have a Sirui M-3204X Carbon Fiber M Tripod, which essentially fell apart after 6 months. I sent it to be repaired (under warranty), and I am hoping the Gitzo is far better built.

The mechanics are reliable for tilting, switching cameras, and rotate. Every maneuver is simplified with the twist right or left to change functionality. Awesome product!

I own 3 other Gitzo tripods, the Series 5 carbon tripod 6-section, weekender and now the mountaineer to replace a heavier aluminum similar size that needed to be replaced. I shot in -7 degrees in the snow with an H camera and had zero problems.

I was upgrading from an older, aluminum, series 2 Reporter by Gitzo. I needed something taller and more stable. I bought this one and I also temporarily bought a series 4 systematic to compare it to. I returned the series 4 systematic because it was simply too large for me to travel with. This mountaineer is the latest and largest available from Gitzo in this series, and it is an amazing set of legs! The engineering is excellent. It is large enough to use with the center column all the way down in most cases, and even large enough to only open the leg sections with about 80% extension for each section, thus improving stability.

Tripod was purchased to support my Nikon D-750. Largest lens being used with the 750 is a Nikon 200-400mm F4, a heavy lens. I'm using a RRS head on the tripod and love this combination and performance. It's short enough to carry on a backpack yet extends to a height sufficient to place my camera at eye height. It's light yet supports nearly three times the weight of my heaviest camera lens combination.

I have an old model Canon 400mm f/2.8 lens that I use with a 6d body and together with the lens support and ball head, they weigh over 22 lbs. The GT3542L feels rock steady under this load from soccer games to Nature photography sessions. The only downside I've seen is flimsy metal tabs that control the leg angle detents; one of mine cracked and part of it broke off after the second time I used it. It's still useable, but I'm irritated that I spent so much on it, and it wasn't more durable. The legs extend and retract quickly, and more importantly; stay put when locked in place. I love the light weight of this tripod even more because everything else I'm lugging is heavy.

Comments about Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I am a professional photographer who uses a tripod for some of my work, but not all or even most of it. As a result, I never invested in a truly great tripod system. I bought a ~$ Manfrotto leg/ballhead kit about eight years ago and it has served me fairly well, even though one of the leg locks broke a couple years ago and had to be fixed. The tripod was short and heavy and the ballhead wasn't anything to write home about. My secondary tripod is a Husky from the 1960s. It's strong and fairly sturdy with a pan/tilt head, but it's quite heavy and bulky. I decided a couple weeks ago that it was time to finally get myself a professional tripod. I was very excited about the Manfrotto 055 in carbon fiber and was particularly interested in the center column that converts into a lateral arm. When the tripod arrived I saw that the construction was not very impressive and there were plastic parts that would certainly break. My rule is, "If it can break, I will break it" so I try to avoid any gear that has a weak link. I returned the 055 in-store at B&H and then went to look at other models in person, figuring it would be a much better way to decide than looking at photos of tripods online. I was very interested in checking out the Gitzo Explorer models with the convertible lateral arm. Within a minute of checking out one of the Explorer models, I didn't like quite a few things about it and decided to look into a more standard tripod with a separate lateral arm. While Manfrotto has served me well over the years, something about their support systems are ever so slightly below true professional grade. I decided I would check into Gitzo's other options, even though nearly all of them were around twice the price of the Manfrotto I had just returned. I do all sorts of different work from portraits to commercial work to video. I work a lot on location and did not want a tripod that was too big to lug around. I wanted something that could work well in-studio but could also be thrown over my back and carried around all day along with my other gear. I decided against the systemic models without the center column because I like being able to raise or lower my camera a few inches with the center column to avoid re-leveling the legs. I know this technically causes a slight decrease in stability, but I have found that as long as you don't extend the column up all the way, the stability is still nearly identical. I was between the 3542 (4-section) and the 3532 (3-section). I extended both to their maximum height to get an idea of their reach as well as their stability. I found the two to be incredibly similar in their stability. The 3542 has a higher maximum height and a shorter overall length when folded. For these reasons I opted for the 4-section over the 3-section.I very much appreciate the ability to ditch the center column if I am packing light and don't need the extra height. Even without the center column, the 4-section is more than tall enough for nearly all of my uses.I have not yet put it through all of the tests, but from using it so far I can say it is the best tripod I have ever used, by far. It feels and looks truly professional and I can't see any bits or pieces that will break on me. I was not initially crazy about Gitzo's twist locks, but I am learning to love them. I like grabbing all three locks at once, twisting them to the left and extended all four sections down in one fell swoop. Much easier than flip locks, and I don't have to worry about them loosening on me over the years like some flip locks do. I paid these legs with the Acratech GP ballhead which is equally great.

Rock solid tripod, light weight, made very well. Expensive but you get what you pay for sometimes.

Comments about Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

Comments about Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I use the Gitzo 3542L with a FARO X330 3D scanner. The tripod works GREAT. It's smaller, lighter, and more adjustable than a surveying tripod, but just as secure. The price is commensurate with the quality, and after a long hot August day of walking miles with the scanner and the tripod, the light weight of the carbon fiber construction is more than worth the cost.
