This is an awesome, if pricy must have for anyone working with flashes as their off camera lighting. It's small and well made out of metal with some soft rubber touch points.

I wanted something slim and easy to use when i need to set up some off camera lighting. I did not want an accessory with 2-3 different levers or tightening nuts, so i found this little gem. Its super well made and locks securely into place. The flash mounts to the top just like it would to your camera. You simply twist the top to tighten the flash on it. I've learned that you do not even need to tighten it when using the Canon 600's, as their locking clip holds onto the mount just fine. If you are running a battery pack to your flash, there is no real spot to mount it with this mount, but you can get creative. Has a spot for an umbrella.

One thing of note would be comparability with stands. This mount needs at 16mm male adaptor for it to really "click" in. This is the slightly smaller adaptor that is not found on a lot of light stands etc.

I tried two of these (ordered one, returned it, & tried a 2nd one--returned it)...I really wanted to like this new lightweight tool, as it appeared to have some unique and out-of-the-box thinking that seemed to be an improvement of my existing Manfrotto 026 Swivel Umbrella Adapter....But both Snap Tilthead adapters had the same issues....The locking mechanism, which is a unique design, didn't fit any of my Manfrotto light stands...I read through the enclosed instructions, and it said "Compatible stands are: Manfrotto NanoPole Stand and Manfrotto range of baby light stands".....This is the fine print that doesn't appear on any website....:(...Then when i inserted a Canon 580EXII flash into cold shoe and tightened it down by turning the Tilthead's plastic locking collar, it was difficult at best...The rubber weather protector of my speed flash got in the way, but even when i finally got it tightened, the speed flash would wobble...:(...i discovered later from a youtube review, that there is an small allen screw inside the locking collar (beneath the spring) of the cold shoe, that wasn't tight, which appeared to have caused the wobbliness (quality control issue..??)....But seeing this tiny allen screw was also responsible for securing the weight of my speed flash, didn't give me confidence....Also inside the locking mechanism of the cold shoe is a piece of plastic with threads, which is the unit that secures a speed flash when tightened....It seemed this should be metal, rather than plastic....It seems that this threaded piece of plastic could probably snap with too much pressure over time, from the weight of a speed flash....Also, the umbrella hole holds the umbrella horizontal, rather than at an angle...:(....Really liked the springy counterbalance safety mechanism, but the other weaknesses overshadowed this unique design item for me....Very disappointed in quality of this Manfrotto product...Returned two of them, and went back to the old design of the original 026 Swivel Umbrella Adapter....I did a youtube review, which you can find if you do a search for Manfrotto Snap Tilthead, and Daniel Andries also did an excellent youtube review of this product....(In my listed Cons, this site wouldn't allow me to delete typo of Plastic Threaded Cold Who...Should say "Shoe")

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

This compact and sturdy product works great for holding a shoe-mounted flash and I love how well it fits into my bag. But it isn't as flexible as some of my other tilt heads because you can only use it with a shoe-mounted flash and only with light stands that are the exactly right size (due to the lever mechanism which attaches the tilt head to the stand).

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

My largest gripe was the fact that the clamp attachment does not lock onto my Avenger brand stands as the stud on the stands is too large to even begin to clamp down, thus leaving the tilt head entirely loose. I was able to get it to partly lock onto some older, off brand stands with a smaller mounting stud but even that wasn't a solid clamp. While it does fit all of the stands I tried it with, the "snap" locking mechanism needs to be retooled to function better with all light stands more securely. While some had issues with the tilt control, I felt that it was able to clamp tight enough and allowed enough freedom of movement for my uses. I can see how using a heavier flash and umbrella combo might lend to problems however. Ease of use was top notch, with the exception of the hot shoe clamp which I felt still needed some work.I gave it two stars but would say 2.5 stars if that was an option. Mostly because I simply could not use it with my stands and had to return it for a refund. Waiting for an updated version before I purchase one again.

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

was very excited at the prospect of being able to quicly pop these on stand without having to tighten anything down, so i bit the bullet and plunked down [$]$ for 2. when i first received it in the mail it felt solid. when putting iton my manfrotto 1004 bac stands the clasp didnt quite close all the way but it was a tight enouhg fit that it could not become unstuck without lifting the leverthe main reson for returning is the cold shoe ontop is unnecessarily dificult to use as well as the tilt mechanism while seemingly very inovative with its springy air cushhouning could not hold a 60 nch umbrella even when tightened al the way. I plan to return these to b&h, when Manfrotto fixes the issues with this product I will gladly buy again

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

I want to start by saying that I like this cold shoe mount. IT is nice. Maybe it is too nice. Attaching it to a light stand is a bit confusing because the nifty quick release looks like it should close flush to the mount to lock it to the stand when it really is supposed to stick out. I had to find a video on the web from Manfrotto to confirm this is how it was supposed to work because the diagrams in the manual made it look like it should be flush. I now see that the design was made so that the mount can be removed with one hand. It is also secure. The spring loaded tilt mechanism is unlikely to keep your flash with umbrella from tilting forward, but it will definitely slow it down much like a shock absorber. Ultimately, this is a quality mount that has been designed with features that make it a luxury. I felt the luxury was worth the price premium given that I only needed two of them, but if you just need something to get the job done there are cheaper options.

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

In my previous review I said that in spite of the failings I was going to keep the two Manfrotto tiltheads I bought and add thumbscrews so I could use them on my Lowel stands. I did that and the problem was solved. I was also planning to buy two more for my office, a university photo department. Since this would be for a new lightweight kit, I bought two new Manfrotto stands, and the Lastolite extension that another reviewer said the tilthead fit perfectly.Guess what? Not only does one of the tiltheads not fit either of the Manfrotto stands properly, none of the four fits the Lastolite handle at all.The locking lever appears to be a casting, and whereas the distance from the pivot point to the point that contacts the stand must be fairly precise to ensure that it locks down with minimal effort and also can be released with similar minimal effort, the necessary precision is missing.Again, because I like two-thirds of the design of these so much, I am keeping them, but I will have to take a file to the tops of the light stands and the Lastolite handle to get just the right amount of tension in the locking lever to lock on securely but not have it so tight it can't be removed. It is disappointing that a device that works so brilliantly in the middle and at the top end works so poorly when all the bottom end has to do is attach to a light stand securely.I can't recommend these to a friend, because they don't even fit all Manfrotto stands properly without spending some time modifying the stands with a file.

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

Parts of this umbrella clamp are brilliant. It is compact, without knobs and handles that stick out too far. It is made mostly of durable aluminum and looks like it will last. The top end clamps onto the flash's foot securely without parts that will fall off and get lost, rendering it useless. The center tilting joint is spring loaded, so it won't let the flash flop over when the knob is loosened. Unburdened, it snaps back to the upright position. Nice.

So far, excellent. The bottom end, however, features a clamping mechanism that will not tighten on any of the industry-standard stands in our studio (including Lowel, Calumet, and Talon). The hole fits a standard 5/8 inch (16mm) stand top, but the clamping mechanism has a tab that wants to press on the narrow part below the stand top, and it must be just the right diameter (11mm or a bit less -- I haven't found anything it fits perfectly) or it either won't clamp at all or won't be tight. One review showed it clamped nicely to a Lastolite handle, but that would be the exception, not the rule.

What the bottom end does is snap onto the stand, leaving the clamping lever open. The thing won't come off unless you open the lever all the way, but it won't tighten either. The clamp is free to rotate because it won't tighten. That may not be a big problem but I would rather have the option to tighten it. Perhaps it fits Manfrotto stands perfectly, but that should be specified in the description.

I like the rest of this item so much that I will keep the two I bought and either buy Manfrotto stands or drill and tap a hole so I can add a little screw with a knob head so I can actually tighten it onto the stand without having to rely on the clamping mechanism that does not work on my stands.

Manfrotto, please make version 2 of this tilthead with a conventional knob instead of your clamping mechanism, so it will fit all 5/8 stands, and while you are at it, please also put the umbrella hole at an angle, not straight, so the flash will be aimed at the center of the umbrella, not at a point as far from the umbrella shaft as the flash head is.

I'm really surprised that engineers that designed this so brilliantly got parts of it so wrong. I can't recommend it, since I don't expect most people to be willing to modify it as I intend to, or to buy a specific stand when every similar item on the market fits any 5/8 stand.

Any strobist who values their equipment must have one of these for each flash you own. When shooting off camera, DO NOT trust your SB910 or any high-priced flash with anything else!! Fits securely..very well built..I tested it on a Manfrotto boom stand with the stud in the horizontal position. Impressive stability, even with the boom arm exended 4ft out. Well worth the price. For the tightest fit, purchase a 16mm male adaptor..

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

This is really a well made bit of kit. It's on a 1051BAC light-stand with a PocketWizard hot-shoe sync adapter clamped into it. When I put my speedlight on this rig it becomes one solid piece...no wiggle or shake in the speedlite whatsoever. You don't really have to tighten it that much--just get it a bit snug.

I really like the snap feature that prevents whatever is clamped into it from falling over and getting damaged. If you want to keep your gear nice and be confident that it won't move around on you or slam against your stand, this is the way to go.

Comments about Manfrotto Snap Tilthead with Shoe Mount:

We've all used umbrella adapters. Some are good some are not.

A while back I picked up a Lastolite Telescopic Extension Handle from B&H Photo to use on the occasions when I am working solo (most of the time).

I really like it but it has an odd head that the umbrella adapter attaches too. None of my adapters would work to my satisfaction. They either tilted to the side or were loose enough to worry me.

Then I got a newletter from the fine folks at Manfrotto about a new product, the Manfrotto MLS1HS Snap Tilthead. I love the way this thing works!

It's easy to tilt, the flash fastens very securely and it connect to my Lastolite handle PERFECTLY STRAIGHT and solid. Not a bad price for this handy piece of gear. Very outstanding!

I was delighted that B&H had this new product in stock and available so quickly.
