Well, after using the 10-22 on crop, and then on FF the 17-40 and a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 manual focus lens, I have to say this new 16-35 really is superb by comparison. The sharpness is wonderful at all apertures, getting slightly better stopped down but hard to notice really. Stopping down then is just for DOF, and being 16mm on the wide end this can really deliver that as well. And the corner sharpness is in another league to all of the above mentioned lenses. IS is the icing on the cake, allowing me to frequently capture a sharp image when a tripod is not an option. I have never owned the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L lens, but being a landscape shooter who almost always is stopping down, this is a preferable lens for me in any case. The price isn't cheap, but in this case it buys you Canon's absolute best UWA IMHO.

While this lens is nicely build it fails to perform in on key element…sharpness. I tested the lens with mirror lockup at every aperture with IS on and off. Unfortunately it is not nearly as sharp and the images have considerably less micro contrast than my Canon 24 1.4 II and 35 1.4. I was extremely disappointed considering the glowing reviews that this glass had garnered. It is still far from replacing even a slightly dated prime.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This lens is awesome the build quality is excellent and the image quality is very sharp even in low light. The lens is a little heavy but if you want a wide angle lens that takes quality images I would recommend this. I used this lens while in New York and Toronto and took some excellent images. Carrying the lens all day for over 12/13 hours each day for over 3 weeks i did find it a little heavy but it is worth it.

Great lens!

By Pklopfen

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Use this with both my Canon C300 and 5D and love how sharp this lens is. Having a 77mm front ring is also nice So I don't need to worry about carrying a extra set of polls, ND, etc wherever I go. The extra stop isn't a issue unless I'm shooting in pitch black and with the sensor technology in Canon bring geared towards low light, the extra stop is pretty negligible. Definitely buy if you use for doc shooting with C300 or if your looking for a great landscape lens.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I do a lot of vineyard and winery shooting, some very carefully set up and some grab-and-go. For the latter, the Canon 16-35 f/4L is ideal whenever I am inside or around buildings where spaces are tight and light is often sparse. This lens is a beauty - comfortable, covers a wide range, very reliable at low shutter speeds due to the excellent IS. I have no problem getting most shots handheld at 1/15, 1/8, and sometimes 1/4 sec.Where I used to carry my EF 14mm f/2.8L to supplement my EF 24-105 f/4L, the Canon EF 16-35 f/4L reaches wide enough for almost all my interior needs.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I mostly shoot landscapes and used the Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM lens till now. Just switched to the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens and have been amazed by how sharp the images are especially the corners at either end of the zoom spectrum. Its a lightweight wide angle zoom with superb construction quality. I am sure it will provide me many years of service similar to the 17-40mm lens which I am now inclined to sell.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I don't see how anyone can complain about the sharpness of this lens unless they have a defective lens. This lens is CRAZY sharp. It is, by far, the best performing Canon wide-angle lens that I've used. The fact that it has superb IS helps, too. It's easy to hand hold 1/2 second shots (or even lower) with this lens. I love this lens - it will be in my kit 100% of the time.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have used dozens of lenses in Canon's lineup and own my fair share of L series glass and EF USM lenses, but this lens has earned its place in my bag, and is my second favorite lens behind the Canon 135L f/2. Of course, these two lenses are completely different, but they both get the job done. I would go as far as to say that this lens gives the sensor the full capabilities of dynamic range that it can handle and maintains contrast and colors better than any lens that I have seen in Canon's lineup. Additionally, it is sharp throughout the entire frame and not just at the center like the 16-35 f2.8 and the 17-40 f/4. IF you are into landscapes, real estate, or artistic portraits, then this lens should be a serious consideration for your purchase. As always, B and H was flawless in their execution of my purchase.

Sharpest in the corners of any wide angle lens I've tried. I've tried the 16-35 II F2.8, and I own the 17-40 F4.0. This lens is the best of the 3 by far. I use it for landscape photography on a tripod so F4.0 isn't much of an issue but image stabilization is really nice. Definitely worth the money.

I am still an amateur photographer, but this lens makes me feel like a pro because I hardly have to edit anything after I shoot as the sharpness is incredible. The IS work great and the lens is very silent, therefore perfect for video. I use the lens with a Canon 3D MK3 and I travel a lot, which makes it my favourite travel lens for landscapes as it is also very light. So far I can't find anything I don't like about this lens.

I like the high quality and reasonable price of this new ultra wide angle lens by canon. The image stabilization works well and auto focusing is ok.The lens hood seems to come loose too easily, and will show up as a dark spot in the corner when it does. I have learned to check that the hood is on properly throughout shooting to avoid additional post production work.

I use this on a APS-C camera, so I don't have full advantage of the wide perspective. I find this lens exceptional, the image colors even look vibrant. The IS wonderful, there isn't anything I can say that isn't good about this lens. You can argue it isn't f/2.8 but the IS makes up for it.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I purchased this lens to go on a 5D mkIII to replace a 17-40 originally bought for a 5D, on the strength of good reviews. They are true. While the 17-40 is a good lens, this one is superb. Wide-angles may not need image stabilization as much as longer lenses, but it does make a difference for critical sharpness. Camera shake can take away the sharpness of the best lens, and IS helps enormously to reduce it.

I just took a family-related trip to England and wanted to shoot landscapes and urban architecture along the way without making a big deal of it. I never needed the monopod I brought along, even for cityscapes at dusk, but was able to shoot handheld on the fly. Using ISO 1600 or 3200 helped, and yes I could have used slower speeds and a tripod but I didn't want to and am happy with the results nevertheless. I left my tilt-shift lenses home, and even after stretching out the tops of the images in Photoshop to correct perspective, they are still sharp and detailed.

I like to keep shades on my lenses in shooting position in my bag to reduce fiddling, and the shade provided with the 16-35 f4L IS is small enough to let me do that. The shade for the 17-40 is much bigger and has to be carried separately or the lens has to have a big space allocated to it if the shade is left on. Sometimes I would just carry the 16-35 in my vest pocket with the shade on.

For me, one stop does not justify the price of the f2.8 16-35mm, but IS does justify the price difference between this and the 17-40. That and the sharpness. I did not make any critical tests, but in actual use it does seem sharp corner to corner as the more technical review sites say it is.

                            5 stars, no reservations whatsoever. This one's a no-brainer.

Excellent lens. Canon's best wide angle

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have the 17-40mm and my partner has the 16-35mm f/2.8, and after using the 16-35mm f/4 IS I can say with confidence this is the best wide angle lens canon makes. It is super sharp. I am extremely pleased with the results. Distortion is well controlled, IS is a very nice addition, and did I mention it is sharp!!! Canon's best wide angle in my opinion.
