Had this lens for about a week now, and have really been enjoying it. It's very sharp, noticeably sharper than either the 17-40mm f/4 or the 16-35mm f/2.8. The latest generation of IS works surprisingly well - Canon claims 4 stops of assistance, realistically I'm seeing more like 3, but that's still extremely good. At the widest angle, this equates to being able to handhold shots up to 1/2s and slightly longer, which opens up some amazing possibilities in situations where a tripod isn't practical.Autofocus is quiet and fast, build quality is excellent, and it handles nicely on the camera. The filter size of 77mm is conveniently common - you'll need a slim filter to avoid introducing additional vignetting (which is already 2 stops or so in the corners).Barrel distortion is moderate at the wide-end, and flattens out by about 20mm, before turning into mild pincushion at the long end. The 16-24mm range is the sweet usage spot for this lens.Aside from a modest incremental in price, and an essentially irrelevant 5mm shorter reach at the long end, this lens is better than the old 17-40mm f/4 in every respect. And unless you absolutely need the faster aperture, it's both better and cheaper than the 16-35mm f/2.8 (the f/2.8 retains an advantage for low-light situations with people or other action that must be stopped).

While this lens is nicely build it fails to perform in on key element…sharpness. I tested the lens with mirror lockup at every aperture with IS on and off. Unfortunately it is not nearly as sharp and the images have considerably less micro contrast than my Canon 24 1.4 II and 35 1.4. I was extremely disappointed considering the glowing reviews that this glass had garnered. It is still far from replacing even a slightly dated prime.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I use this lens for landscape and travel photography. Great for capturing a wide landscape or having a wider view of the background when taking portraits. Fast lens, sharp at corners. Used my FoCal on this lens and it comes tack sharp from the factory, no AMFA adjustments needed! Decent built quality, not as solid feeling as the all metal lenses (70-200 f2.8L II USM)

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I've used the Canon 10-22mm EFS lens and the Canon 16-35 2.8L and this lens blows them out of the water in terms of sharpness. I primarily shoot video and the image I got from the 10-22mm was horrendous. SUPER soft, I hated shooting with it. Recently upgraded to full frame so I used the 16-35 2.8L quite a bit. I expected to get a really nice, sharp image when moving up to a $ L series lens, but was still very disappointed by the soft image the lens was producing. Then this lens is released and I knew it would be the one to hit the mark. I am very pleased with the image coming from this lens. The IS is also great because we use it a lot on the glidecam so it's nice to switch it on and eliminate that tiny bit of shake one might get from glidecam shots. Some may complain about it being a slow f4 but with cameras like the 5DIII, 6D and the new Sony A7s, it's really not a concern because of the amazing low light ISO ability. Great build, great sharpness, great IS, overall great lens worthy of the red ring. And REALLY loving the price BTW.

Outstanding lens in every way. Very sharp at all focal lengths and apertures, even the corners. Great micro contrast and colors. Excellent flair control & ghosting, distortion is about same as 17-40 which is easily fixed in Light room. The IS works great for hand held shots, what more can you ask for. I Highly recommend this lens, don't hesitate because you won't be sorry. Best UWA zoom Canon has ever made period.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

First off, let me say I have owned two copies of their 17-40 f/4L in that past and thought it was a great lens, but only when stopped down to f/8-f/11. Never tried the 16-35 f/2.8L II because from the reviews I saw it was only slightly better, but again only when stopped down. This new lens, is in one word "Amazing". Every focal length and every aperture is sharp, sharp & sharp! Wide open at the widest focal length their is a tiny hint of softness in the extreme corners, but you can only see it when viewed at 100%. Looking at the images at 50% (print size), everything is tack sharp. Flare and ghosting is as good as I have ever seen with a lens. Distortion is about the same as 17-40, which is fixed easily in Lightroom. What I love most about it is the micro contrast and colors are best I have seen. This lens is like having 5 awesome primes in your bag, what more can you ask for. IS works awesome, hand held shots I tested at the wide end, 1/2" sec exposures are no problem and 1" exposures if you have something to brace against or have a very steady hand, how cool is that for indoor or low light work where you can't use tripod. Also takes 77mm filters which is another bonus. No lens is perfect, but this one is about as close as you will come with a UWA zoom, especially in this price range. I have a feeling you will start seeing a lot of 17-40 and 16-35 2.8 going up for sale once the word gets out to everyone. All I can say is thank you Canon for finally making the UWA zoom we all been wishing for, it's about time!

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I use this lens with the Canon 5D Mark III mostly for general touring and low-light interiors (European cathedrals, palaces, museums). It replaces my non-IS 16-35 f 2.8. Sure I wish it could be f2.8 but it is as big and heavy as that lens and I would not want to haul any heavier rig.

I have a higher yield of sharp shots and they are sharper at the edges with this f4 IS and I need not shoot so many duplicates or spend as much time reviewing at the site before moving on. Speeds down to 1/6 are reliable but some luck or propping is needed below that. I am 73 so a younger person probably could go slower.

I hardly ever have to go above ISO 2000.

Yes I would recommend this lens to a colleague. It should do quite well for landscape.

I owned all every copy of 16-35 (17-35)mm Canon f2.8L zoom lens. Every update got a little better but I was still unsatisfied with the last version 2. The Center maybe super sharp but the edge is sometimes almost unusable soft. Finally I tried the new 16-35 f/4L IS and it's great. I gave up one stop but I realized because of soft of all the previous f2.8L lenses I rarely shot at f2.8L unless I had no choice. Now with IS I can even use this lens for my hand hold video projects! I immediately dumped my f/2.8L as I will never use it again.

I'm only giving this 4 stars because I still wish it would be f/2.8.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I was hesitant to consider this lens because of the f4 max aperture. When this lens came out I wondered why Canon produced such a product. After reading reviews and needing a wide angle lens for a trip to Kenya, I purchased this lens. I am very impressed with the quality of the images it produces. Corner sharpness is tack sharp at all apertures. Having used the 16-35 f2.8L and the 17-40 f4L, this lens exceeds them both.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

My first ultra-wide. I wasn't convinced that the 16-35L 2.8 II was worth the investment. Canon is producing amazing new lenses (70-200 2.8 II, 24-70 2.8 II) so I was comfortable purchasing this lens as it likely would be just as sharp as the other new entries. I was not disappointed. This lens is very sharp. For a ultra-wide, I am more than willing to trade IS for aperture. Forget about bokeh at the wide-end anyway, even on the 16-35 II. The IS goes a long way in making up for the slower f4, especially in conjunction with Canon's high-ISO DSLRs. The lens is lighter than I expected. Handles very well. On my 5dIII, The image is sharp throughout the range, expect for at the wide-end where it softens in the corners a bit (but still acceptable). Focus is fast, no hunting, even in low light. Sure, it vignettes and distorts at the wide-end, but quickly disappears approach 20-24mm, but the effect is correctible and in no-way distracts from the lens. In addition, this lens imparts a wonderful image - it has the intangible quality that defies all the tests and technical measurements. Awesome lens. Super sharp. I'm afraid some of primes are going to now gather dust... Nice problem to have.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

As a previous owner of the 17-40 f/4 L, I welcomed the addition of this new UWA zoom. Like many others, my chief complaint with the 17-40 was corner sharpness. This new 16-35 f/4L IS delivers all the way to full frame corners. The IS is an added bonus, and allows me to shoot in situations without a tripod I couldn't previously. For the price, this lens is a relative bargain.

I am using this lens on my 7D, it is sharp, the auto focus is fast and the image stabilizer is silent. This is a great lens for my landscape photography. It gives me the range that I am looking for and I am completely satisfied with this lens and its results

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

While this lens is nicely build it fails to perform in on key element…sharpness. I tested the lens with mirror lockup at every aperture with IS on and off. Unfortunately it is not nearly as sharp and the images have considerably less micro contrast than my Canon 24 1.4 II and 35 1.4. I was extremely disappointed considering the glowing reviews that this glass had garnered. It is still far from replacing even a slightly dated prime.
