This is one sick lens. Large aperture so great for shooting in low light. Long focal length for more candid shots. I use it for weddings and event photography and the super fast AF allows me to get the perfect shot every time.

I would recommend this to be used on a full framed camera, since a cropped sensor would give a 216mm focal length and could get a little too shaky handheld since it does not have IS.

The image I included was shot wide open (Canon 5D Mark II - 135mm - F2 -1/160 sec - ISO 800) to demonstrate the bokeh characteristics.

I bought this lens because so many people said they used it for sports in a gym with a crop sensor. That gets them close to 200mm without investing in a 70-200mm. I shoot XC, and Indoor and outdoor track and field. I use my 70-200mm with 5DMarkIII for running events and a 7D with the 135mm for field events. I've only used it once, so I'm not making a clear judgement yet, but I did not find it such a snappy focusing lens. I would say 50-60% of my shots were out of focus. I made adjustments to the focusing on the camera thinking that was the problem, but that yielded a rate of about 40-50% out of focus shots. Some were back focused so maybe a micro adjustment is needed? I did not just love this lens at first use like I did my 70-200mm. I plan on more use and an update of this review, but wanted to get my thoughts out.
It is lightweight, and sharp when shooting static subjects. Color is good, and I did not see any CA.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I am a semi-pro (check out my pics at Brandie Brummer Photography via facebook). The most recent are with this lens. This is an amazing lens. It gives the most creamy bokeh and is light weight (with respect to the next step up -- the 200mm f/2L). This lens is a must have for your lens line-up, especially if you like the portrait with good bokeh.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I use this lens for portraits and head-shots. The bokeh is as great as I had heard about this lens. Except for its heft and weight, I cannot praise this lens enough. And the focus is really, really fast. Love it.But.... had to get the 35mm f/2 ISM for indoor shots. Indoor portraits I use 85mm f/1.8.I plan to carry these three lenses for assignments wherever. Sold all my zooms except the 70-200mm f/4L.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

This lens is amazing. I pair it with a Canon 5D Mk II and everything about this combination works just perfect for me. I shoot portraits of couples and solo portraits with this and the pictures just blow my mind each time I download them from a shoot.

When used with the right technique and shot wide open, the lens offers just the right level of background compression and subject isolation in my opinion. The focal length almost forces you to maintain the right subject distance and as a result, almost the entire subject is in sharp focus and rest of the background is just beautifully blurred. The bokeh is just not only melty but also has a beautiful character to it. It looks very pleasant to my eye. The lens produces stunning contrast right out of the camera, beautiful colors and corner sharpness even when shooting wide open at f/2.

The focus locking is so perfect - the lens never hunts on my body. The weight is just right too and with a wide aperture, a lot of creative possibilities are afforded on the shoot.

If you shoot people and are looking for a nice keeper lens that will give you a lot of mileage over a long period of time, you are looking at a winner here.
PS: Attaching a few shots from a recent lifestyle couple's photoshoot that I shot here in Arizona.

I can only echo all the comments about the exceptional performance of this wonderful lens, and all this performance for such a reasonable price.

My observation is there is frequently stated comment, "the lens would be even better with the addition of Image Stabilization". Such comments fail to appreciate that numerous aspects of this magic lens recipe would have to be compromised to add IS. I beg Canon no to change this magic recipe!

I'm just an enthusiast that had wanted a 135mm lens since way back in the 70's. I read a good number of the reviews here, and they confirmed that this lens is an outstanding value. I am so happy to have made this purchase. I have been experimenting and have been very happy with the results...admittedly, coupling this lens with the 5D MKIII helps. :-)

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I have been wanting this lens for a year, and it is everything I dreamed it would be!! It's lightweight for my weak wrist unlike it's big sister the 70-200. The bokeh is sharp and dreamy and makes me all giddy when I see a perfect shot at F.2. The compression is amazing, even more than my 85mm, very fast to focus too. Though not ideal for close action shots because of the length, I tested it at the park with my dog and though he was too close, the lens was very fast in following him. I look forward to using this for my weddings!

                      I own a lot of Canon L glass. The 14 2.8, 24 1.4, 35 1.4, 50 1.2, 85 1.2 primes and the latest versions of the 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200 zooms. This lens is sharper than any of them.

Ver nice handling and very solid build quality. It feels very nice in the hands and provides extremely sharp images. The large f/2 aperture gives you some great family photos for those close up candid shots. The lens is a good weight and balances on the lens well.

If you are looking for that 3d separation of your subject. Look no further, this lens is top quality and has the sharpness to back it. I own the 85L and this lens is right there with it in quality.

You're deciding on whether or not you should buy this lens, right? You've read all the reviews about how sharp it is, right?

It's all true. I bought this lens for beautiful bokeh and sharpness and I got more than I paid for. My only gripe is a small one but it would have been nice to have a rubber strip on the mount as most other L lenses have.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I purchased this lens two weeks and absolutely love it. The clarity and sharpness of this lens is simply amazing. I spent a long time debating whether to pull the tirgger on this purchase or to buy a Macro lens instead. Since I primarily like to take pictures of people and my dog, I am extremely satisfied with my decision to go with the EF 135mm f/2L USM. I have two other Canon L lenses that I also love but the 135mm f/2L excells if you love creamy rich bokeh.

Comments about Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens:

I have been wanting a great portrait lens for a long time. I was considering the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II IS USM lens, but the weight was more than I wanted to handle. I read a lot of great reviews on the 135mm f/2L USM and decided to go with it. I am just amazed at the quality of my photos and the beautiful backgrounds it produces. I kind of miss the zoom feature of the 70-200mm, but the difference in weight and price makes this lens my new favorite. It's hard to shoot a bad picture with this one!
