I bought this mostly to use as a 50mm prime. I mostly use zoom lenses because of their more variable range and it has been cheaper to get zooms then replace tons of primes since I have gone from film to digital. I wanted to get a 50mm prime but I wanted something more rugged and better quality then the 50mm (nifty fifty) lens. I also didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for another 'L' glass so I went with this. The quality is wonderful. It is not an 'L' glass but it still feels nice. It is a good weight and is a fun lens to use. Unlike zooms, with a prime you need to be more creative with your framing and you need to actually move around to find a nice shot. The macro is not true 1:1 macro but I am a landscape shooter so this is not a big deal. I have had some fun playing around with the 'macro' feature and the photos it can produce have been amazing. With a set of extension tubes you can get even closer to the subject. There is a 1:1 converter you can use but this is a waste in my opinion because you will lose light and the cost of the lens and adapter combined is almost the same cost of the 100mm 1:1 macro from canon. So if you want a true 1:1 macro with a better auto focus then go with that. But for my purpose of wanting a 50mm prime and something to take close up photos this was a good investment.

The autofocus is noisy but who uses autofocus when doing macro? The manual focus ring feels sturdy but not as smooth as an 'L' lens. There is a little play with the manual focus ring, allowing you to wiggle it a little but i suspect if you treat your equipment right (I baby mine) this should not be a problem.

All in all, this is a good quality lens and I have been able to get professional quality results with mine in the short time I have owned it. I shot a sunset the other day with this and was able to get tack sharp detail on the contrast edges of black and red between sky and a grain silo. The individual struts holding a grain elevator up were nearly tack sharp and this was without the use of a tripod or monopod at f8... and the silo was over 3/4 of a mile away. So this lens packs a lot of punch for the price. For closeup work, bokeh is pretty good and although I don't shoot portraiture, I would imagine this lens would work well with these too.

Only negatives I have found are that the lens does have some rather bad chromatic aberration wide open on high contrast areas (like dark leaves and a bright sky). Of course this can easily be corrected in photoshop as long as the area it occurs is not the main focal point of your photo but this was a little disappointing, however I already knew about this issue before buying. This can be a problem with the landscapes I shoot but as long as I keep this problem in the back of my mind, I can either switch lenses or change my position so this is kept to a minimum. Unlike 'L' glass, this does not come with a lens hood but you do not need it. If you are like me and keep a UV on your lenses to protect your investment, just take it off for a few minutes when shooting in high sunlight and the recessed front element will be shaded by the 'built in' lens hood.

Overall I am very happy. This is a middle of the line lens - A step up from the nifty fifty and a step down from the 'L'.

After reading all the positive reviews for this lens I couldn't wait to try it. I mainly wanted it for insect and plant macros. The macro capabilities of this lens were underwhelming. Side by side, my 18-55 kit lens produced equal quality macros. It did do well for portraits, however. Very nice color and sharp. My expectations may have been too high, but I wasn't going to pay for a new lens that was nearly the same as my kit. I returned this lens and purchased a 100mm macro and now I am happy.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

This lens is consistent and works beautifully. My only complaint so far is that the autofocus setting doesn't always work properly- but I know from comparison that this is because I'm using it on a fairly old canon body. I have used this lens with newer bodies and the autofocus has been perfect.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

I love this lens because its short and compact. Theres no image stabilization, but for me IS is only needed when going less than a 1:2 lifesize ratio. I can tell no difference in picture quality between this lens and the 100mm macro L lens at 1:2 lifesize ratio. However, the 1/1 ratio is a must for me, which this lens cannot provide without extension tubes. This lens with extension tubes is not a good substitute for achieving a 1:1 ratio without paying for the 100mm macro L lens. If you want to shoot at a 1:1 ratio handheld, pay for the 100mm macro L lens and you can shoot without getting blurry photos.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

I bought this lens for use in my still life studio, intending to use it for subjects that fit within an area of between 2 and 5 square inches. I've been using an older Canon 100mm macro lens that has given excellent results. I would have continued to use it but discovered that I needed my camera to be closer to some subjects to take advantage of useful features of my macro ring flash. Performance of my 50mm macro lens is on a par with my 100mm macro lens, both are excellent. I discovered a minor problem with the 50mm lens in that it produces a small amount of chromatic aberration, especially in the edges of images. However, this can easily be removed using Photoshop. As an added benefit this lens also performs well in non macro settings.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

I purchased this lens for its great image quality and compact size. I meets or exceeds my expectations in both areas. My only complaint is the build quality. This lens is made with cheap fealing plastc and the focus ring is very poorly damped.

                      Excellent lens for first timers.

Purchased this lens for a student that wanted an entry lens for macro-photography. She has been using it exclusively for about a week and she is getting some great shots.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens:

Lighter, not as ruggedly built or as tight a construction, but a great value for macro photography where 50mm is ideal. Great lens to have if and when needed. No lens shade is included- and I can live with that- but it would have been nice.
