This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I ordered this EF 85mm F/1.8 USM few days ago and had it sent to me 2nd day service. When I got it I installed the lens into my Mark II 5d. It is a great lens for portrait. This is one of the best lens. I like the sharpest and quality. It is light compare to my Canon lens 70-200mm. Just went around and testing this see how good is this lens. I went around taking pictures on landscaping type of pictures and see how good is this 85mm lens. You be the judge of it. I just love this lens and probably will be using it a lot.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

It looks like an old fashion lens, and that is what I like.
Very sharp, light weight and small.
But, I can't find a good lens hood for it

I have only taken this lens on a few shoots, and so far it handles wonderfully! The bokeh is beautiful shooting at f/1.8 and low light performance is also great!

I would defiantly recommend this lens! It is sharp, great bokeh, and a great lens for portraits!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I did my homework before buying this lens. I mostly shoot couples, maturity, and seniors. This lens was amazing from the moment I put it on my 6D. Fast at focusing, not to heavy, and is very sharp. Love shooting with this wide open as well! If having Quality images is something you take pride in... Buy this lovely lens!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Not only a nice portrait lens, but great for sports - especially wrestling matches. It is quiet, fast, solid - and watch your depth of field when set to f1.8 - nose and ear are right on the edge of one being out of focus, so best to close that aperture down a bit and still decent shots at f2.8. Everything gets pretty sharp at around f4 & above.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

For those of you who are starting off and cannot afford the Big Dog 85mm 1.2 lens. This one is a great start to the introduction of the Prime Lens. It produces a great photo at F1.8. But I truly feel that it forces you to the details of composition in your pictures. Practices makes perfect and you must practice with it. After a while the results will show and makes you stand out from the growing field of new photographers. Think of this lens as an investment towards your journey of becoming a great knowledgeable photographer.

I am a portrait photographer, shooting senior sessions, fashion editorial spreads, and a few music artist, and the lens never fails me. The bokeh at 1.8 is amazing and the sharpness of the lens is incredible. I have previously owned a 70-200 2.4 but recently sold it because I feel that this lens can do just as good as a 70-200 portrait wise. Definitely would recommend for anyone looking for sharp, focused, portraits.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Best purchase. Great for portraits. The angle is super narrow so you do have to stand farther back from the subject than usual, but the quality of the lens makes up for that inconvenience.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

i am a portrait photographer more than anything. this particular canon lens sails from the 90's and it definitely withstands the test of time. with tamron releasing the prime lenses with image stabilization, other brands are sure to follow. However, i purchased this lens at a sale because i've used this lens before. This lens is a proven product for me, whereas the soon-to-be-updated ef 85 might not turn out too great. the common weakness of vintage canon glass is the chromatic aberration. not only is it a problem in the mid-range glass but the weakness is also shared by the previous generation L-glass lenses. Canon recently updated the EF 35 1.4, but that thing costs $1,800. I haven't personally used the new lens, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't turn a swamp into a castle. Currently, the EF 85 1.8 goes at early $300. For that price, you get completely useable image even at the maximum aperture, solid construction (contrary to the EF 50 1.4), and simply the best bokeh quality I've seen in any lens. I use it on my 70D a lot and with the crop sensor lengthening the focal length, the out-of-focus area gets even blurrier and it is just soooo smooth. There is basically no distortion; vignetting is easily fixed in lightroom. If you can look past the known issue which is chromatic aberration (which is not bad at all) unless you are looking for that perfect glass which is almost like a mirage, you will not regret one single cent spent on this lens.

This lens is definitely on of the gems in the Canon line-up. Sharp, fast-focusing, light, and at a rather low price. The focal length is great for portrait work, and it also works well from some low-light action photography, such as basketball. Excellent lens.
