This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

I think I need to play with it a bit more, but I'm still hooked on my 50 1.4. Focus seems quick and accurate. Quiet. Good lens for the money.

Well built lens from Canon! I don't feel that it's too heavy . It's nice to give the model some space so I'm not right in front of them. Sharp and nice bokeh!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I held off on buying an 85mm for quite awhile because i didn't think I would need/use it that often. I use the 70-200 2.8 so much that I thought the 85mm was an unnecessary purchase. So after mulling it over for awhile I decided to make the purchase. I almost went with the Sigma 85 1.4 which has great reviews but decided to go with the 1.8 instead... Ive got to say it is the sharpest lens that I have used yet. I will not use anything else for portraits. Tracking with this lens on my 1DX is very fast which is an improvement over the 35mm 1.4. Shot a family portrait session the day after I got it and the shots were tack sharp even with movement. From what I can tell I would def save the money and get the 1.8 over the 85mm 1.4.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This little gem is without a doubt one of Canon's worst kept secrets. One of the very first prime lenses I ever bought, this is an essential lens for either portrait photography or longer-lens video: beautiful images wide-open, easy to focus manually or automatically, and at a fraction of the cost of either the L series 70-200 options or the ridiculously-priced 85mm f1.2 (whose performance does not necessarily noticeably beat this lens). There's a reason this lens gets rave reviews, and if you need that extra little bit of persuading, check out Ken Rockwell's excellent comparison blog.I've used many lenses over the years, but somehow this one always finds its way back on the camera body (along with the Sigma 24mm f1.8). Simply essential!

I purchased this lens for head shots and general portraiture. The faster 1.8 aperture makes for exceptional shallow depth of field and buttery backgrounds. Quick autofocus and tack sharp. Far superior to my 24-105L for portraits.

I love using this lens for portraits. I don't think you get as much compression as something like the 70-200mm at 200 but I like being closer to the subject. I also will often pop this on for taking shots on the street. I couldn't afford/didn't want to pay for the 85mm f/1.2 and have been very happy with the crispness and quality of the shots with this lens.

The only down side was that is didn't come with a lens hood. Had to purchase that separately.

The first copy I received from B&H was definitely too soft and called for a replacement. My second copy is much better but I do not agree with many of the reviews I have read on this lens. The lens struggles to focus in low light and under the best circumstances it is not tack sharp. The images are acceptable after post work and there is nice creamy bokeh. So, yes it is a 1.8, nice bokeh and light weight. But not tack sharp.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Flattens out the back ground great. Easier than carrying around a 70-200mm and tripod! If you are a small traveling photographer this lens is a great fit. I couldn't go to a shoot without it! I photograph a lot of bands in poorly light venues this lens is by far one of my favorites to use when i don't want to get near a pushy crowd and want the wide open f-stop. Love take portraits with it as well. Nice strong casing doesn't feel like a cheap plastic lens.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Fast lens, great for video and portraits. Construction is not up to par with the L-series lens, but then, neither is the price. For casual use indoors, this is a great little lens.
