This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Incredible Lens

By PG

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Best purchase. Great for portraits. The angle is super narrow so you do have to stand farther back from the subject than usual, but the quality of the lens makes up for that inconvenience.

This lens is definitely on of the gems in the Canon line-up. Sharp, fast-focusing, light, and at a rather low price. The focal length is great for portrait work, and it also works well from some low-light action photography, such as basketball. Excellent lens.

I loved the canon L series model of the 85mm however, I recently just purchased this one due to budget constraints and I am very pleased with my decision. Every day individuals cannot tell the difference between the sharpness of this lens and the L series.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Considering the quality and character you get for the price this is a no-brainer. It is a great introduction to prime lenses, and why you want them.

This is one of my favorite lenses. It is great for low light street shooting, portraits and nature photography. It has a wonderful bokeh that you would expect from an L series or famous German lens.
There is a bit of CA on backlit sources. But I can fix that by shooting raw and fixing it with the Camera Raw plugin on the way to Photoshop or LR. Not a big deal.
(really people, do you think Ansel Adams or Sebastião Salgado take perfect pictures with no darkroom 'help'. Or to quote someone you might respect
"The negative is the equivalent of the composer's score, and the print the performance." – Ansel Adams)

It can be sharp when stopped down. But for me this really delivers it's signature look from F1.8-F4. And that is why you want this lense, it does not just have a particular field of view or depth of field. It has a distinct character.
The only real con is that it doesn't have IS and the L version 85mm doesn't either.
Please Canon make a MK II of this amazing lens and add in IS! I often take shots at night and could use a little shake reduction.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I bought this lens to use on a T6i. I was excited about its potential after reading others' reviews, and seeing their uploaded photos. However, my copy suffered serious focus issues. Out of 22 test shots, I had 0 sharp, in-focus images. Some of the shots were taken outside, in moderate morning light, and some were inside using filtered, outside light, and large apertures. Ten of the 22 were taken using a tripod, and of a high contrast, linear scale to see if the lens was front, or back focusing. What I found was it mostly back-focused, but was also hunting for focus. As stated, none of the images taken was acceptably in focus, much less "sharp", so I returned the lens to B&H. The 2 star rating is for a previously owned copy of this lens. It was okay, but not special, so I can't really recommend it to others.

I purchased this before traveling to Mexico for work, knowing I would be getting into some more portrait work down there without being able to get incredibly close to all of my subjects.

Excellent image clarity and very fast.

Only con that I've had so far is the weight - it's a pretty hefty lens compared to other ones its size!

          Clear and Bright

          By Laura K.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Bought this lens to use as a primary portrait lens on a 6d. It has a nice weight and build and has produced clear images with beautiful bokeh. At 85mm, this lens might be a little tight for portraits on a crop sensor body, but is good on a full frame.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This lens takes beautiful portraits, but it has horrible CA. It is nice and sharp at all apertures, but I can't do much backlit with it.

That aside, had a horrible experience with BH when my package was lost. They were spectacularly unsupportive.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This lens is exactly what I wanted. A fastish fixed focal length that will give me a variety of uses for street photography & portraits. Although I do not go for a lot of shallow focus aka bokeh, this lens can easily do that.
For portraits on a non-full frame APS-C the 85mm becomes 136mm and is a bit long. For a head/shoulder you need to be about 10-12 feet away. This can be a problem for some indoor shooting where a 18-135mm zoom gives you more flexibility. However, the added reach for my style of street photography is an asset.
It does not have any image stabilization. However, I found the small size and weight made it easy to use down to 1/60.
Another advantage of the small size is that it is easy to pack and therefore not a lens you might leave in the case.

For the cost it has lots of value.
