This lens is so sharp it hurts (the models of course). It's definitely sharper than my Canon 50mm 1.2L and that thing cost me 3 times the price. This baby's light, focuses really quickly and quietly and has a terrific build (plenty good, unless you're going to subject your lens to the very extreme warlike scenario). Not too expensive. The bokeh is superb too. Focus ring just stiff enough for comfy video focus pulls. Couldn't, even if I tried, come up with a single reason why the wad of cash in your safe is any better than this little glass beauty. Get it whenever you can afford it. I own four L-Lenses and this one just outdid every single one of them in image quality.

I bought this prime mainly for portrait and close up of people/animals/objects. The lens is very fast and light, the assembly is of good quality and overall is a good bang for your bucks (in the range of $400-$450). I'm really happy about its sharpness and it's very fun to use, the colors of the subjects are nice and the contrast is perfect. Overall, a good lens and it gives all you would expect from it.
What it really disappoints me is a very bad purple fringing and a very bad chromatic aberration around small details, particularly in high contrast and high luminosity situations. They say that stepping the aperture helps reducing these well-known defects, but as far as I can say, they are still annoying up to f4.0 in a consistent number of pictures, so this is an annoying defect that spoils the evaluation what is, apart from that, an excellent lens. I'm happy of the purchase, but there is margin of improvement.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I bought this lens to use on a T6i. I was excited about its potential after reading others' reviews, and seeing their uploaded photos. However, my copy suffered serious focus issues. Out of 22 test shots, I had 0 sharp, in-focus images. Some of the shots were taken outside, in moderate morning light, and some were inside using filtered, outside light, and large apertures. Ten of the 22 were taken using a tripod, and of a high contrast, linear scale to see if the lens was front, or back focusing. What I found was it mostly back-focused, but was also hunting for focus. As stated, none of the images taken was acceptably in focus, much less "sharp", so I returned the lens to B&H. The 2 star rating is for a previously owned copy of this lens. It was okay, but not special, so I can't really recommend it to others.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I purchased this before traveling to Mexico for work, knowing I would be getting into some more portrait work down there without being able to get incredibly close to all of my subjects.

Excellent image clarity and very fast.

Only con that I've had so far is the weight - it's a pretty hefty lens compared to other ones its size!

    Clear and Bright

    By Laura K.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

Bought this lens to use as a primary portrait lens on a 6d. It has a nice weight and build and has produced clear images with beautiful bokeh. At 85mm, this lens might be a little tight for portraits on a crop sensor body, but is good on a full frame.

    Beautiful... But

    By Tahiryhumrichphotography

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This lens takes beautiful portraits, but it has horrible CA. It is nice and sharp at all apertures, but I can't do much backlit with it.

That aside, had a horrible experience with BH when my package was lost. They were spectacularly unsupportive.

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This lens is exactly what I wanted. A fastish fixed focal length that will give me a variety of uses for street photography & portraits. Although I do not go for a lot of shallow focus aka bokeh, this lens can easily do that.
For portraits on a non-full frame APS-C the 85mm becomes 136mm and is a bit long. For a head/shoulder you need to be about 10-12 feet away. This can be a problem for some indoor shooting where a 18-135mm zoom gives you more flexibility. However, the added reach for my style of street photography is an asset.
It does not have any image stabilization. However, I found the small size and weight made it easy to use down to 1/60.
Another advantage of the small size is that it is easy to pack and therefore not a lens you might leave in the case.

For the cost it has lots of value.

I bought mine in 1997 and it's now 2016. Completely trouble free operation. Creamy beautiful background blur of portraits. Used for taking photos of doctors for advertising their private practices in brochures. Tack sharp lens. Stays on my camera most of the time, always gets a good shot. Super fast near instantaneous focusing for using motor drive on models to capture fleeting expressions. Can't say enough good about his lens buy one, rotate camera vertical, put bottom of frame halfway through stomach and top of frame above models head. Then fire away!

I wanted some fast glass for portraits and headshots. Looked at the reviews and compared it to the 1.2L and 1.4 Sigma. Almost went with the Sigma but in the end this one came out on top in my mine. Yes it's not as well made and not quite as fast but everything else is just as good, with price being way better! Peace!

Comments about Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

                    Quick review:
I got this lens a few months back and all in all I enjoy working with it. It has nice DOF with smooth bokeh. It's not too heavy to work with for extended shoot times. And with what I shoot 85mm is a great lens length. It's ok with low light but I'm sure the 1.2 is better. This lens DOES create chromatic aberration. (more details below)

                    Detailed review:
As with any lens, lighting is key. I shoot kids fashion photography (some in studio and some on location) so I always shoot in auto focus. Auto focus could be better . A nice crisp pic for me is when I can see the eyes of the model crystal clear, even down to the eyelashes. I expect a lot from my lens and this lens can deliver if you work at it. With optimal lighting it's an easy task but low light can be more of a challenge to achieve. To me, in low light (and I don't mean dark, just anything less than optimal like indoor situations without strobes etc.) is a challenge to get super crisp images with this lens but it can be done. I take 1500-3000 shots on an average shoot and hope that I got clear pics but shooting kids on location can be like that.

On location you WILL get chromatic aberration with this lens but with post editing it can be corrected.

Overall this lens works well for the price. If I had it to purchase again, I wouldn't hesitate. If you are looking for a nice prime lens, don't hesitate to get the Canon 85mm 1.8 lens.
