On a Canon T2i I had been using just the 50mm f/1.8 with reasonably good results, but was limited by the lack of a zoom. I am just the average dad taking pictures of my kids running around in daylight or at various activites in-doors at school events. They don't pose or stay still. I was looking for a light-weight all-purpose "inexpensive" lens useful both indoors and outdoors and for action.

As the pros will tell you such a lens does not exist or is unaffordable.

This Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 lens has many of the features on my list and works pretty well as a walk-around lens. While it is a hefty 500g lens, with the T2i body it does not feel heavy when carried around walking all day. Zoom creep did not occur if I left the lens at 28mm when walking.

The lens appears well-constructed with a smooth movement of the zoom and quiet auto-focus. I purchased the refurbished lens from B&H for a price lower than that on Canon's website. It arrived in a Canon box with a 90-day warranty from Canon.

I previously had a Canon 18-55 mm lens on an Xti and had not taken many pictures at angles less then 30mm. The range of this lens is ideal for my needs. The image stabilization-IS while probably of a previous generation is a new and welcome addition for me. More shots at slower shutter speeds are usable. I can get decent pictures in good light outdoors and indoors and by using a flash with low light indoors. At low light however, I still prefer the 50 mm f/1.8 as I am not fond of using the flash.

I would recommend this lens for anyone looking for a general purpose lens.

I like this lens. I don't really really like it, or love it, or dislike it, or hate it. I just sort of like it. It's nice and sturdy feeling, and has a great zoom range on my crop sensor which serves as a sweet mid-range telephoto (with the 1.6 crop factor I get a nice 45-205mm range).

It doesn't do great in low light but hey, how many zooms in this price range actually do? If you buy a lens that specifies it can't open up past 5.6 on the long end then you are made fully aware that it won't shine when the sun sets. I knew this going in, but I accepted it for the combination of price, zoom range, and the fact that I can use it on a full frame if need be. Lens creep is terrible, but for less than two bucks I got a pack of latex elastic hair bands and I slip one in the barrel crack and that takes care of that.

The really bad thing on this lens is how much dirt and dust it lets into the deep internals; you can look through the front of the lens and see the sandbox sitting there under the glass that you cannot access to clean.

It does its job ok, and image quality is an upgrade from the kit lenses but not by a huge longshot. I don't regret buying it but in retrospect wish I'd saved up another couple of hundreds for something a little better.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I use this as an all-purpose lens for taking portraits of my newborn as well as nature photos. The glass is great quality and really brings a lot of light in. The image stabilizer is a life saver in low-light (I don't have a fancy flash or setup for portraits).

The focus is fast and quiet, great for capturing those quick moments like a smiling baby!

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

    The Good:
The "IS" feature works as promoted. Very handy for video work at the wider focal lengths that have the larger apertures. It is relatively light for a zoom range of such a large spread. Impressive. The switches to toggle AF/M and IS on/off are solid and snap into placement very firmly. No chance of accidental switching. Build quality has been great, been shooting with mine for 6 years and I bought it used (could be even older). Never had a problem and it's travelled with me across the country.

    The Bad:
Optics wise, the lens has a lot of distortion if you shoot it on full frame. Be sure to turn on in-camera lens correction if you body supports it. Distortion is not as bad on APS-C bodies. If you shoot RAW, then correction via Light Room presets for this lens and you'll be good. The lens is very soft if shot wide open outdoors.

The lens performs well as an all-purpose workhorse with my Cannon 5D Mark III. The lens creep can be a problem when carrying the camera or taking a photo of a subject at a downward angle.

The image stabilizer is useful when I shoot steadicam style with my tripod.
            I would recommend this lens.

One con if any would be it doesn't have a lens lock to prevent it from sliding down when carrying.

I purchased this lens for a friend as a gift for his wife. She had seen mine and mentioned that she wanted the same lens. I've had mine for so long, I'm not sure when I bought it, but it is a great all around lens. It gives you a good wide angle, but also a perfect focal length for taking people pictures. A great lens when you just want to keep it simple for the day. I help teach a photography class and almost everyone who has ever taken the class has this lens. We consistently recommend it as a core piece of equipment. In almost 20 years, it is one of the lenses I would never give up; great pictures, great quality equipment.

This lens was a great buy for the price! I took it out into a snow blizzard with a Canon 7D and the photos are almost magical. Definitely worth a buy for a beginning photographer or a student building their portfolio. Only downside is the lens expands on its open when the camera is hanging around your neck or tilted down. But I am still thankful for the buy.

As great as this lens functions as a kit lens, there are much better alternatives for a few bucks extra. I bought a 24-105mm and have never looked back, reason cause this 28-135 was going to just sit around.

AF and IS work well. Compared to an longer ef-s lens, this has much superior resolution. I can resolve more detail with this lens than with the ef-s at extreme zoom. This one is effectively a longer lens. I should have used this all along. The lens is not light but the combo with the camera is well balanced.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I can't believe Canon made some very low quality product like that. First, then lens expand by itself when facing down. So it 's very hard to take picture of something on the floor and keep focus. Canon said it is NORMAL. I doubt about it.

After 6 month, it had a problem with the motor and gave a bad focus. They repair it but not the first problem.

Now It's out of Warranty and It began an other problem with the motor, when it start, it seem to go fast forward and backward and never stop. After a minute it give me a communication with the lens error on the camera. I tried many thing to correct that but nothing work. It can do this during a whole day or it can be OK for a week.

Lower quality business sell better product than that.

Let me start by saying the IQ of this lens is not stellar. But, it is not bad either, especially for the price. It is not the fastest horse in the stable but quite usable in good lighting. It has full time manual focus and the front element does not rotate. The design has been around for a very long time -1998, I think. The IS is an older, 2nd, generation. Canon is has just now discontinued the lens. - over 15 years in production!! That alone says something about the product!

It is a good walk around / general purpose lens and if you are not a pixel peeper it will serve you well. I have been using the lens with a 50D for over 6 years and have no complaints other than lens creep which I control with a rubber band,

I would recommend this lens to the average Mom or Pop looking for something to document the kids growing up or the week end shooter who just enjoys taking photos. However, if you want pro quality, buy the red ringed glass and pay the price that goes along with them.

I keep this lens on my camera as my walk around default lens. It's a great portrait lens and just wide enough to include your subject and some background. I love this lens and would buy it again.
