I've had this filter for 5 months now and I use it all the time mostly for smoothing out water (lakes, rivers) or blurring out clouds. Also used it for blurring out foregrounds like grass fields. This is the first dark ND filter I've used and I really could not imagine not have a dark ND filter like this - I use it so much. Results are great - no complaints about optical quality and no issues with color cast. Using this one on my Fuji X-T1 mostly with the 10-24 lens.

I have always had Hoya filters and have never had a problem with any Hoya products but upon receiving this item in the mail I found the filter to be quite dusty upon opening the package. But much more to my horror when I used a Nikon lens cleaning wipe on the filter the solution on the wipe cut right through the coating on the filter and marred it. It's completely ruined and I never got the chance to even attach it to my lens let alone to even use it once. Maybe I shouldn't have used the cleaning wipe but i've used those wipes on other hoya filters without any problem. So I don't know quite what to say. I hate to give the product a 1 star, but can only give that rating based on my experience.

I shoot with a GH4 and the Sigma Art Lens paired with the speedbooster. When shooting video outside this filter is critical when the aperture is at f1.8. Great product.

Comments about Hoya 72mm NDx400 HMC Filter:

This works well to use with motion effects in still photography. I use it at the seashore to make the motion of the tide and surf more fluid. It is 9 stops, so you need to calculate the effect before using and not just start shooting with it, unless, of course, you are just experimenting to see what happens. I downrated to 4 stars only because I don't like screw-i filters, but I suppose that's not the fault of just Hoya. In the 21st century, it seems that there's a better design to fasted a filter in front of a lens without having to fumble with the screw thread for 10 minutes. Magnetic? There's a thought!

Comments about Hoya 72mm NDx400 HMC Filter:

The filter allows me to extent long exposures to shortly after sunrise. I use it as an artistic tool. It seems solid enough and does what I want it too.

Have not looked for color shift, it is why I use Photoshop.

It seem a little hard to clean for some weird reason, not enough to be a problems.

Comments about Hoya 72mm NDx400 HMC Filter:

This has been my go to filter for several years now. I had been using the same filter on my DX lens and just made the switch to a Nikon FX set up. The first thing I needed to do was grab this filter and that's what I did. I do a lot of landscape/seascape photography and this thing does a great job at allowing me to get slow shutter speeds in low and high light. Definitely a product I would reccomend if in the market for a solid ND filter. Easy on and off in the field too.

This is the first extreme ND filter that I have used so I do not have a comparative point of reference. I however have found this filter to work very well. There is almost no color cast and the build quality is very good. The ring is made of brass and the glass is substantial. You just feel this thing will last forever. I did notice that it was very difficult to clean. I finally got it done with the same substance I use to clean the sensor. For me day time shoots are 30 seconds at most with the majority of them being around 8 to 15 seconds.
