I bought this filter to experiment with long-exposure landscape images, and it excels for that purpose. I usually purchase B+W MHC filters, but after reading several reviews I was concerned with the reported warm color cast of their ND 3.0 filter. Comparative reviews praised the natural colors of the Hoya, so I decided to give this filter a try. So far I am very impressed - I was able to achieve 30sec exposures in daylight (f16, iso100) and the colors are beautiful, especially the blues. Since I like to shoot moving water that was particularly welcome. I would ideally like to have a 10-stop (ND 3.0) filter with these characteristics, but 9-stop is good enough for most purposed. The only cons are the aluminum ring which doesn't mount as smoothly as the anodized brass B+W rings I'm familiar with (a little grabby), and the coating that is a little harder to clean than coatings on other high-end filters. However, a LensPen filter pen works pretty well on Hoya HMC coatings, so the second point is not too critical.

This filter serves its purpose. However, the coating got sticky in the heat. I tried wiping it off with a microfiber cloth and the coating smeared. I dampened the cloth and that created scratches and swirls.
It says not to use any chemicals on it. I guess H2O is a chemical.
    For the money, very disappointed.

I use this to capture motion. Something Lightroom 5 can't do. Lately, I've been using it just after sunrise and just at sunset. I get about 10-20 second shutter at ISO 100. This allows some blur in the vegetation keeping the earth clear/sharp. Also, great for morning sun and tall waterfalls of 10ft+. It increases the exposure for that smooth water effect. It does get fingerprints of oil. But I just wipe it down pretty firm, and it cleans up well. When I first got the filter, I took great care and used gentle pressure to wiped it, and the gentle wipe does not work well. I found using a breath and firm wipe with a microfiber gives me better results on removing fingerprints.

Comments about Hoya 77mm NDx400 HMC Filter:

This Hoys 9D stop filter is awesome. I was considering B+W but there was the 'magenta' cast which I did not want. I was ok for a stop less than 10D, but no color cast for me. The 9 stops of Hoya are more than enough. I have got pretty good snaps of waterfall with this filter, with exposure time of 20sec in some cases in sunlight (reduce the EV if 20sec is too much of shutter speed). The build quality is great. As others have said, cleaning the filter is not straightforward, but not nightmare either. I tried 2 methods, 1) washed it with a drop of dish detergent under luke warm water and wiped it with a lint free cloth. This worked pretty well. But then I cant do this in the field. Hence option 2 for me is better. 2) I got a Proxxxxx cleaner ($, don't remember the exact name) from a local camera store. I spray it on the filter and wipe with the lint free cloth. This works for me and I can do this in the field too.I tried breathing onto the filter and wiping, but it leaves smudges. Go for it!

                      HOW I USE IT:
Hobby-type landscapes. (I bought it for night scapes in particular. I don't know if it will work, as I'll explain.)

                      PROS:
                      - My copy was indeed about 8 1/2 to 8 2/3 stops of attenuation. Quite powerful.

                      - You can tell it's quality; also a quality, positive mount.

                      - Easy to mount to a Tokina 11-16mm, and I have not had problems with vignetting even at 11mm. (Note: I'm using a crop sensor.)

                      CONS:
                      - It may cause noise and/or hot pixels to be accentuated during really long, dark exposures, I'm not certain yet. I had this problem show up with a D7000 and the Tokina 11-16mm. I'm pretty sure it was the camera's processor, even with RAW, but it proved to me that this is harder than I imagined. My intent was to avoid post-processing for multiple-exposure startrail nightscapes and just have one long exposure (a couple hours long). I did get the startrails! But the overall quality was not very good. I think I'll return it for a 3, 4, or 6-stop ND instead.

                      - It robs some resolution (I believe most filters probably would), but I think it's negligible unless you're just totally into resolution (you know who you are.)

                      - It is decidedly hard to clean because it smudges badly. No mercy. If you touch it, there will be a fingerprint and smudging. I don't think this ruins the filter, but it's kind of annoying...to all our engineer friends out there, keep working on that next generation of ND technology :)

                      CONCLUSION:
I'd heartily recommend it for use during the daytime, because it's high quality. I do not think the smudges from cleaning the filter affect the outcome. (If it did, they wouldn't be making these filters, because they're kind of hard to clean if you accidentally touch it.) However, I have trouble using a 9-stop during the night time. I guess I should have known :)

I will not mention coloration too much, because it seems to depend on the environment. I don't quite understand. Know that it doesn't change color that much. I just pay attention and am able to successfully use a small amount of in-camera color correction. This is a high quality filter with some noticeable but easily forgiveable coloration. I think if you use a lower ISO and don't push the limits too much (I pushed it past it's limits), your color won't be changed too far.

Comments about Hoya 77mm NDx400 HMC Filter:

When I first started looking for filters the ONLY thing folks would recommend was the B+W filters. Nothing against them but, man, the price. I'm an amateur, not a pro. I was told I wouldn't like this. I started researching, on the web, and dozens, if not hundreds, of pro photographers had this one in their kits, not the B+W's. In fact, when I started looking at pro gear, very few of the actual pros had B+W's... so, on a whim, I bought it and I don't regret it, at all.

I color balance using the Expo Disc, set my exposure and then screw this to the lens and shoot. I even use it with HDR brackets to smooth water, "remove" people from street scenes, etc. I don't see any color shift, or even vignetting with it. I bought a 77mm and a step-up ring. I can use it with my Sigma 10-20mm, Nikon 18-55mm, 55-200mm and my Tamron 90mm. Love it.

My only "complaint" about this is that it's "slower" to use as you have to screw this into the lens threads. That said, from what I've seen, this is higher quality than the slide-in kind.

Just what I needed for water shots. I know some say you don't need ND if you get there early or late evening for correct light. I'm not always at favorite water spots early morning or late evening. ND400 9 stop filter works great. Just have to watch for hot spots in water mid day. Good price compared to other brands.

My thoughts were to use this to smooth out water on lakes, etc. and for waterfalls. I did some test shots and viewing them on the camera lcd I thought I had some color cast in the longer exposures such as 30 seconds and above but when viewing the original jpg and raw images I wasn't really seeing any color cast even at those exposure lengths. I tried some hdr with this also and it turned out better than I expected. For the price, it was on sale at the time, I pleased with what I'm seeing.

I'm trying to keep it pretty clean as many note cleaning this might be an issue so I'm putting it back in its case right after use.

This thing is amazing. Last night, I actually dropped it from waist height onto concrete and it is 100% intact.

I use this for long exposures (light trails, star trails, waterfalls, ocean tide) and cutting light in extreme conditions such as mid day, overhead, light.

I have used this for dragging the shutter and flash portraits during mid day light.

This filter makes it possible to shoot slow shutter speeds at wide apertures on bright days. You will be able to blur moving subjects and water. It also allows for longer exposures to help smooth out time lapse photography. May be too dark for some applications. You will likely need to increase your screen brightness if you are using live view for focus.. this is a very dark filter. Viewfinder composition is not easy, even on bright days, but can be done.

Works great for what it is supposed to do. There is a slight vignetting happening with longer exposures. You can clearly see it with 20 - 30 second shutter speeds.

This is a great 9-stop filter for long exposure photography, and it comes at a great price. I don't notice any color casts with this filter, nor any image degradation. Very solid filter overall for those who need long exposures.

I use this 9-stop filter to create long exposures. It works well - no color cast. Haven't noticed any reduction in image sharpness. Fairly low profile; if shooting, say 24mm on FF, best to anticipate cropping a tiny bit in post and compose accordingly. The multicoating can be tough to clean. Using a high-quality microfibre cloth does the trick, or a LensPen (best to have a lens pen just for your filters).

Stacks no problem with my Hoya 4-stop and Hoya CPL but watch the vignetting! Stacking all three, on a sun-with-cloud-day, I am getting around 4 minutes of shutter (at iso 50, evaluative metering, 50% sky 50% land).

This filter is almost useless IF your camera support is flimsy. You need a solid tripod and head for long exposures, or a bean-bag on the ground, or a solid piece of earth/rock/log/whatever.

Very happy with this filter. Got it on sale for smokin deal.

If you don't feel like paying double or triple for the competitors, this one is excellent.

Bottom line: no noticeable color cast, no noticeable loss in sharpness (provided your camera support gear is SOLID), great price.

I use this ND for cloud movements, waterfalls and communicating time. It does not cause a color cast or noticeable decrease in IQ. Threads fit well on 24-70 and 17-40 Canon glass.

This filter works great for the price. I have not seen any color cast and does a great job.
