The only lens that I use on my 5DII. Beautiful contrast and colour rendering. Snappy focus. Well balanced when attached to the camera body. In my opinion it renders better that my 35mm Summilux, however that may be due to the M9 sensor limitations. The 35L saves me a lot of time when post-processing. It needed minor in camera adjustments in order to focus accurately. I've uploaded some sample photos for the curious amongst the community.

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

This is a great L series lens at an incredible price point. If you're shooting hand held in low light, this lens buys you two stops compared to an f/2.8. That means that instead of shooting wide open at 1/30th, you might be able to shoot wide open at 1/125th. There's a huge difference in camera shake issues.

This lens is not terribly heavy. It is sharp. It's a great lens to take in a low light kit in combination with that other Canon Gem, the 135 f/2L.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I have been shooting with Canon lenses for about 10 years, and this is without a doubt the lens that felt most right to me right out of the gate. Fast to focus, nice field of view, beautiful bokeh. It's the ultimate tool for the kind of shooting I do most - street photography and street portraits. The only thing I really didn't like was just the lens hood - it's not smooth to slide on or off, or put on the camera backwards, and for a lens at this price point, the plastic that goes with it should work perfectly.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I ordered this lens and it was shipped to be within 3 days. Was really impressed as it came before I expected. The lens itself is perfect. Considered trying the Sigma 35 Art especially because of the incredible price point, but stuck with my Canon and it does not disappoint. I'm used to shooting around 2/2.8 with my other lenses because that's as low as I can go, and it is so sharp and gorgeous at this aperture. But the fact that it shoots so crisp and clean at 1.4 is even better for me, as I shoot often in low light situations. So happy with my purchase. Thank you!

I use this lens primarily for environmental portraits. I recently purchased it as a more specialized option over my 16-35 at full zoom. I have nothing negative to say and it meets my expectations well. It's nice that these older models are still available as I would not have paid the extra for the II version. Once calibrated on my camera, I am dependent on the auto-focus at narrow apertures and I'm not having any issues there. Quality is pretty good at 1.4 but I tend to stay 1/2 stop above it. Not so much for quality but to provide myself some consistency with the narrow DoP. Great choice of lens, high quality, great output for these types of photographs.

It gives me a wider view than the 50mm which I needed for my small studio space. Perfect "tweener" lens when you already own a 50 and the 24-70.

This lens with 5d lll body is a wonderful combination. Magic!
I was concerned about feeling a bit constricted, having used mostly my 16-35 for travel shooting, but found the 16-35 stayed mostly in the bag on our Grand Canyon trip. I wanted to capture as much detail as possible and found that the 16-35 mostly moved detail away. When I wanted to capture more information I would shoot 3 or 4 pans and stitch together with stellar results. Honestly, I know there is a new 35 version, but I don't see how it could be much better, really!! This is the one.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I use this lens for journalism work, I have only had it a few weeks now but wanted to review it as it is likely to be discontinued in favor of the II. I have used it at night in nearly unlit alleys and crime scenes, and flat lit interiors and environmental portraiture. I have been very pleased with the performance, it is a "narrative" lens that is fast enough to allow for lower ISO in minimal light. For me this makes enough of a difference that form now on if it is really really dark I will use this over my 16-35 2.8 which is my main workhorse. Autofocus performance is great in good light and roughly equivalent to the 16-35 in low light. The contrast color and sharpness all appear better than the zoom to my eye (my eye is not perfect) and when using it for environmental portraiture I feel like it has "the look" I am after. It handles light sources pleasently, occasionally there is some haze halos around lights wide open but it is not overly distracting. I am really pleased, I think I will consider replacing my mid-zoom with a 50 prime in the coming years. Obviously the II will have some performance improvements it sounds like it is even sharper, but most of my work ends up online not on billboards so I jumped on this while it was still in stock. In all honesty I highly doubt I could tell the difference between the two under real world conditions at screen or newsprint resolutions. Many of you have super vision or do commercial work, you will probably prefer the II.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Lens:

I am an amateur photographer who has gotten serious with my work the last few years. I shoot a Canon 70 D and this is my first Prime Lens and my first L series lens. Out of the box I went out shooting and had one bad result after another...all on me, not the lens. None of my current lenses approach the 1.4 speed of this beauty and I consistently failed to properly gage the DOF and ended up with a number of 'soft' images. I then mounted my camera on a tripod and shot a series of objects lined up on the dining room table, all focused on the first object at each of the possible 17 f stops. Reviewing my work I was surprised how shallow the DOF is at the fastest speeds. My shots at 1.4 are now sharp, but correct focus and proper shot planning help me avoid the 'soft' shots I had out of the box. So...if this is your first fast, quality lens, I advise taking some time to learn what it can do. Once you do that you I believe you will be as pleased as I am with this purchase.
