A large part of my photography tour business is teaching macro.

A ringlight is the most overlooked part of macro. Most folks own the lenses, but very few own the light. Photography is all about light.

I am around and use all the differrent brands of macro lighting regularly. I own several of these Canon Ringlights, and a Sigma Ringlight for Nikon. Have used the Nikon R1C1 quite a bit as well.

The hangups with both the Nikon R1C1 and the Sigma are the batteries and lack of battery boost. The Canon Ringlight accepts an 8 cell battery booster. That alone so trumps the others that it is an instant winner.

Someone stated here the Sigma is smaller, no, it is definitely bigger, both the head and the power pack are considerably larger than the Canon.

What I really like about the Canon ringlight is the user friendly interface and no extra parts. The Nikon R1C1 comes in a small cosmetic type case and has a huge collection of parts. Those many pieces can sometimes be overwhelming in the field, but no doubt be useful in a studio setting.

Another biggie is the tip of the Canon is compact so when pointing at bugs and the like in bushes, one is far less likely to bang the bush with the rig and spook the critter.

You have to be careful with the Nikon R1C1 because if you knock it off the tip of the lens it can hit the deck and break. With the Canon it is still tethered on the coiled wire.

It does what is supposed to, but there's lots of little annoyances. I should have returned it, but I missed the 30 day cut off. I don't imagine I'll be using this much and I'll probably sell it.

I use this with the 100mm f/2.8 macro.

Annoyances:
- The flash does not attach to the lens with the filter installed. It would not have taken much to make this possible, but I guess they just thought it wasn't important. I disagree.
- The controls are not very intuitive or awesome.
- The directional control isn't great. Switching from all-left-hand-side to all-right-hand-side isn't much of a change on real pictures.

Probably this is all fine if you mostly just want even illumination because you're photographing small things in a lab. But if you want more interesting photos, this flash won't give that to you.

For an E-TTL flash, the results can also be pretty bad. It took me some messing around with controls to get photos that weren't totally overexposed. The automatic features are definitely below those of the 380EX I have, which is many years old at this point.

Furthermore, it's pretty expensive and bulky for what it does. It works, but I would prefer the money I spent on it over having this flash today.

Bottom line: I should have gotten an off-camera cord for the 380EX. It would have been a much better option for me.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

I was hoping to find a cheaper alternative, but after researching as many ring flashes as I could find, and the most common negative feedback for cheaper brands was that they broke after only a few uses. You get what you pay for.
Yes, it is expensive and heavy, but almost exactly the same price and weight as Canon's top-of-the-line 600 EX-RT flash, which I also own. Both flashes are made for professional photographers who need equipment that is accurate, consistent and durable.
Besides, its weight is due to being made of more rugged materials, so I see that as a plus. Would you REALLY want a lightweight flash that's going to break in a month?

GREAT MACRO FLASH OPTION!

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

It is what it is - and that is a Canon macro flash that has ETTL! Great results and compatible with my other flashes when the MR-14X is used in Commander mode. It's a little dated though, being a flash that is not "radio", but infared system needing visual communication. Also, the build quality is a little lacking as this flash has a plastic foot with a "screw-down" locking option, which is so "old school". However, I am loving this unit!!

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

I'm giving this flash only 4 stars because it is heavy and there are other options out there that I like better like using a trigger and receiver on my regular flash with a small soft box and it works just as great if not better. It's still a good flash but it is expensive.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

I love macro-shooting and use a Canon 7D with 100mm 2.8L macro lens. I have been using the Canon 430EXII speedlite for flash with a home-made diffuser, which was cumbersome to use at its best. The MR-14EX is a real jewel for me. Easily attaches to the camera, sleek lines adding no bulk to the set-up, allows me to easily control direction and power of the flash, works great on 1:1 true-life macros as well as distant shots, recycles quickly and feels like it is just part of my lens. Amazing! The only "con" for me is that I cannot use filters on the flash. Otherwise... perfect for me.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

I use the Ring Lite with a Canon 100mm Macro lens. The results are outstanding. I hesitated to buy it because I feared harsh light, but my first exposure banished that fear. This flash gives beautiful, even light, and its output can be adjusted in a variety ways. It has cut the amount of time I must spend on a shoot considerably and gives me better results.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

With close-in macro nature photography, adequate and even lighting is required for decent depth-of-field and shutter speed. This Ring Lite is easy to attach and use with my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. Out of the box, I was able to take my first macro test shots in minutes. The lighting provided is superior to a hot-shoe flash for the closest shots.

If I was to wish for an improvement, it would be to engineer wireless communication between the flash ring on the lens front, and the flash unit in the hot-shoe. The cable connecting the two sometimes gets in the way.

FIRST OFF IT'S PRICY. SECOND YOU HAVE TO BUY An ADAPTOR TO TO FIT THE LENS IT DOES'NT COME WITH PACKAGE THE INFORMATION BOOKLET IS COMPLETE EXCEPT THAT IF YOU NEVER USED A RING LIGHT ''NO DIRECT INFORMATION ON SETTINGS ''IT'S TRIAL AND ERROR HAD TO CALL CANON FOR THE CORRECT INFORMATION ON SETTINGS. NOW FOR THE GOOD POINTS I LIKE THE IDEAR THAT IF YOU SET THE CAMERA ON ''P'' EVERTHIING IS DONE FOR YOU IN ''ETTL'' MR-14EX IS VERY WELL MADE AND WORKS GREAT ON MY 5D MARK 11, AND EOS1DS MARK11 58 MM ADAPTOR RING IS NOT BAD IN PRICE AND IT FITS SNUG LIKE THE IDEAR THAT YOU CAN USE EITHER SIDE FOR DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF LIGHTING ONE OTHER POINT THAT COMES TO MIND IS THAT IT SHOULD HAVE HAD A WIRE CORD THAT CAN BE DETACHED FROM THE TOWER

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

Have had the mt-24-ex twin-lite for some years, but find it somewhat cumbersome and potentially fragile in the field, although it is excellent in the studio. Have only had the mt-14 for a short time, but it works well with with my 5D-III and all of my macro lenses (65mm, 100mm, and 180mm), although all three required the purchase of macro adapters to make the mr-14ex fit in front of a UV filter. No learning curve, since it operates exactly like the mt-24ex.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

This flash may be a little pricey, but if you do macro photography, it's well worth it. We first tested it with Canon's 100mm f/4 lens and it worked wonders.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:

There is a learning curve, but the resulting photos are very nice. It's pricey, but the resulting photos are lovely.

It's a heavy unit once you get it on your camera, I think that the adapters should be front and center, I had to call later and order the adapters separately since I didn't realize the ring lite wouldn't just fit onto my lens without an adapter.
