No matter what type of photography you shoot, every one should own this lens.

-This lens is SHARP!! at f/4 its as sharp as lenses that cost 15 times as much. 1.8 is a little soft, but it's great to have for novel shallow DOF/ night/ special effects.

-the AF is faster then most of my AF-s lenses and just as accurate. It might search a little in really hard situations, but no more than much more expensive lenses.

-This lens is so light! It is always in my pocket, Always! no matter what I'm doing having a sharp, fast, non-intrusive (it's so small it doesn't scare people, so in most situations I get better images than with the amazing 70-200 because it's HUGE and intimidating)--A lens is only useful if you use it.

-on a DX (cropped sensor) camera this lens is even more amazing! It is 75mm equivalent; perfect for part body portraits/ street photography. Because DX only uses the center of the frame it's even sharper!

-there is *no* distortion (perfect for architecture)
Some coma in the corners and some light falloff at 1.8 on full frame/ 35mm, no biggie. A perfect complement to a distorted, slow walk-around zoom.

-bokeh(smooth out of focus areas) is good but not amazing
way better then any cheep zoom though.

If you're thinking about getting the 1.4: the only reason to spend three or four times as much is that it's sharper at f/1.8. BUT it has more distortion at f/4 than it's cheaper sibling. If you're a pro and need build quality, don't let me stop you, I have one. For every one else, If you have four hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket get a 85 1.8 or the new 60 2.8 AF-s

-this is still up in the air but the 50mm 1.4 AF-s I tried was no faster then the 1.8. (whoops)

If you're really hard on your gear I'd say, buy a 52mm Nikon NC filter and Nikon HR-2 rubber hood (or another 50 1.8 for almost the same price)

bottom line:
its one of the SHARPEST, FASTEST, LIGHTEST, MOST USEFUL lens money can buy, AND IT'S THE CHEAPEST!!!

It makes every camera, from a D3x or a F6 to a D50, shine!

This lens is great for the money. It really is. But it has very ugly highlights in low light. I just purchased the overpriced 45mm Nikkor P. It is old school, manual focus, and simply beautiful in low light. For other applications, I have the 60mm micro-Nikkor. So I will probably sell the 50mm.

It is, however, definitely worth the price. It focusses fast, it does work well in low light, and you really cannot beat the price. It's small, light, and very sharp. But I think the 45mm, although overpriced, is far superior for my needs. The focus ring on that lens is very well damped, and the bokeh is otherworldly. I don't pixel peep so I'm not concerned with the absolute sharpness. I love the colors and the depth of field. But if you want a lens that is small, light, and inexpensive, the 50mm is it. My "problem" is it really isn't worth selling, and the thing weighs mere ounces.

I might get a really fast 50mm, like the f1.2. But since I am now shooting with a D700, lens speed really doesn't matter. But it would be fun to hook up a f1.2 shooting at iso 6400 in virtual darkness.

Comments about Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens:

The 50mm 1.8D lens from Nikon is a pretty sharp lens. The price is obviously VERY nice. It was the first Nikon lens I ever bought when I switched to Nikon several years ago. I thought it was a pretty nice lens, but since then, I have purchased the 105mm 2.8G VR Micro-Nikkor, and the 70-200mm 2.8G VRII, and have used the 24-70 and the 14-24 f/2.8G lenses, and I gotta say . . after using those beautiful lenses, you can really see what is wrong with the 50 1.8D. It's definitely sharp, no matter what, but it's bokeh (in my humble opinion) is not very good. Kind of ugly looking. Also, it has a decent amount of distortion and vignettes quite a bit throughout its range. And the absolutely biggest problem with it, is that it's made so incredibly cheaply, that it bends when I grab it to take it off my camera. It's like made of cheap aluminum that bends like it's hollow. And there is no place to safely grab it to pull if off your camera or put it on. It's small and has that darn ridiculous aperture ring that is no longer necessary at all this day and age. And the last horrible thing about it, is it's the only lens I've used that has soo much chromatic aberration that contrasty areas of your photo, zoomed in, almost can't be used. It's nasty. BUT! for $ or $ bucks (or whatever the price is..), I still think you should definitely pick one up if you have a full-frame camera. It's just so cheap and it really is a very sharp lens. No doubt about that. It's tiny, it's cheap, and it's quite sharp. I have seen many, many fantastic photographs taken with it over the years. In magazines and elsewhere. So if you're a decent enough photographer, trust me, you can still use it to make incredible photographs. The speed of it really makes it great in low light as well. That's all. Grab one. Don't grab one. You're probably fine either way.. ; )(oh, I forgot one more bad thing.. (Sorry). It does NOT focus very fast, and it is definitely NOT silent. It has loud, and slow autofucus.

Comments about Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens:

I bought this used from the good folks at B&H. I'm still a new to this hobby. I recently bought the D5200 which came with the 18-55mm but wanted to try out this lens. I bought it because I read the reviews and yes - it is all that. I paid $ for it. Enough said! I basically took the camera to the same places I took shots with the kit lens - just to see the difference. The first thing I noticed was the exceptional Bokeh. It is sharper and the color reproduction is a bit 'truer'. The auto focus doesn't work with the D5200 but I don't mind manual focus. This is a must have lens considering its price.

    Buy This Lens

Comments about Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens:

I recently owned the 50mm f1.4 G and the manual focus 50mm f1.4 Ais but this inexpensive updated D lens is far superior for my style - why? Because it has minimal barrel distortion. It's a modern D lens if that makes sense - great contrast and sharpness and although it has an aperture ring, when you put it on your modern DSLR the ring locks and you control the aperture from you camera - just like you do with any other modern ringless lens. Screw drive (auto focus is driven from the camera - no af motor in the lens) startles you at first if you have your fingers near it. Faster focussing and just as accurate as the 50mm G lens. Nikon claims their manual focus 50mm f1.4 Ais is "distortion free". No it isn't. This little D lens has the least distortion of the three 50's mentioned above.

Ignore color/contrast on the three window shots as they were taken at different times of the day - all f8.

I got this as a portrait lens to start out with. And it's a good lens. However at large apertures the chromatic aberration is pretty bad. Other than that it's ok.

Comments about Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens:

At right around $ this lens is the best bang for your buck. Its small, light, compact, and it takes exceptional photos. What I like most about the lens is that it is compatible with nikons lower beginner cameras as well as the professional full frames. So by purchasing this lens you'll save in the long run because you wont need to upgrade to FX lenses. Be careful though because on the lower end nikon cameras this lens will not autofocus, If you're comfortable with shooting in manual than this is not an issue for you. I strongly recommend this lens for the beginner all the way to the advanced photographer. This is my new favorite lens, Im actually in the process of selling all my zoom lenses and purchasing prime lenses only. I hope the readers found this review helpful!

This is just a great lens. I consider a lens you just HAVE to buy.

              Why?

Well it is the cheapest lens you can buy. It is also very sharp and quick to focus with excellent color rendition.

On a APS-C sensor, it is a great portrait lens. On full frame, its a great 'normal' lens. Good for head and shoulder portraits and street photgraphy.

Fast so you can shoot in dim environments.

Use it as a short portrait tele with a 7100. Back in the film days a 85 1.8 was always in my bag. This kind of lens, almost symmetrical in design, is very sharp and well corrected. I feel speed is not a big deal compared to a 1.4 especially considering the difference in cost.

A sharp clear lens for relatively cheap - only thing it lacks is an internal motor (there is a more expensive model with the motor if your body needs it). There is basically no good excuse not to have this lens, unless you already have better glass.

Takes nice clear pictures and offers great depth of field. I bought this camera for portraits and am very happy with it. One thing to note and this is not a negative, but you want to make sure you read the description clearly before purchase. I have a Nikon D5000 and AF is disabled for this camera and some others. The lens aperture ring must also be set to f/22 and then you use the camera's aperture settings. Again, this is a great lens, but make sure you're not caught off guard when you go to use it the first time.

Comments about Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens:

I take a lot of photos of dogs and cats and I like to get close without distortion. The focusing is super fast and accurate. I really like this lens. I don't like the fact the lens is made in China and the plastic construction but I do like the quality images it provides. Ask me in three or four years if I still like it.

Comments about Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens:

This is the first prime lens I've purchased for my Nikon, and it doesn't disappoint. The auto-focus doesn't work on my model, but I usually focus manually for the purposes I bought it for anyway. The glass creates very clear shots and I love the wide aperture.

Have only used the lens 2X. I am practicing to take portraits of my dauhgter. So far like it.
The only problem I have is mounting it and removing it to my D7000. I 'share' the camera with my 25yr old son who also has a difficult time mounting/removing the lens so I know it is not just me!
