No matter what type of photography you shoot, every one should own this lens.

-This lens is SHARP!! at f/4 its as sharp as lenses that cost 15 times as much. 1.8 is a little soft, but it's great to have for novel shallow DOF/ night/ special effects.

-the AF is faster then most of my AF-s lenses and just as accurate. It might search a little in really hard situations, but no more than much more expensive lenses.

-This lens is so light! It is always in my pocket, Always! no matter what I'm doing having a sharp, fast, non-intrusive (it's so small it doesn't scare people, so in most situations I get better images than with the amazing 70-200 because it's HUGE and intimidating)--A lens is only useful if you use it.

-on a DX (cropped sensor) camera this lens is even more amazing! It is 75mm equivalent; perfect for part body portraits/ street photography. Because DX only uses the center of the frame it's even sharper!

-there is *no* distortion (perfect for architecture)
Some coma in the corners and some light falloff at 1.8 on full frame/ 35mm, no biggie. A perfect complement to a distorted, slow walk-around zoom.

-bokeh(smooth out of focus areas) is good but not amazing
way better then any cheep zoom though.

If you're thinking about getting the 1.4: the only reason to spend three or four times as much is that it's sharper at f/1.8. BUT it has more distortion at f/4 than it's cheaper sibling. If you're a pro and need build quality, don't let me stop you, I have one. For every one else, If you have four hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket get a 85 1.8 or the new 60 2.8 AF-s

-this is still up in the air but the 50mm 1.4 AF-s I tried was no faster then the 1.8. (whoops)

If you're really hard on your gear I'd say, buy a 52mm Nikon NC filter and Nikon HR-2 rubber hood (or another 50 1.8 for almost the same price)

bottom line:
its one of the SHARPEST, FASTEST, LIGHTEST, MOST USEFUL lens money can buy, AND IT'S THE CHEAPEST!!!

It makes every camera, from a D3x or a F6 to a D50, shine!

The 50mm 1.8D lens from Nikon is a pretty sharp lens. The price is obviously VERY nice. It was the first Nikon lens I ever bought when I switched to Nikon several years ago. I thought it was a pretty nice lens, but since then, I have purchased the 105mm 2.8G VR Micro-Nikkor, and the 70-200mm 2.8G VRII, and have used the 24-70 and the 14-24 f/2.8G lenses, and I gotta say . . after using those beautiful lenses, you can really see what is wrong with the 50 1.8D. It's definitely sharp, no matter what, but it's bokeh (in my humble opinion) is not very good. Kind of ugly looking. Also, it has a decent amount of distortion and vignettes quite a bit throughout its range. And the absolutely biggest problem with it, is that it's made so incredibly cheaply, that it bends when I grab it to take it off my camera. It's like made of cheap aluminum that bends like it's hollow. And there is no place to safely grab it to pull if off your camera or put it on. It's small and has that darn ridiculous aperture ring that is no longer necessary at all this day and age. And the last horrible thing about it, is it's the only lens I've used that has soo much chromatic aberration that contrasty areas of your photo, zoomed in, almost can't be used. It's nasty. BUT! for $ or $ bucks (or whatever the price is..), I still think you should definitely pick one up if you have a full-frame camera. It's just so cheap and it really is a very sharp lens. No doubt about that. It's tiny, it's cheap, and it's quite sharp. I have seen many, many fantastic photographs taken with it over the years. In magazines and elsewhere. So if you're a decent enough photographer, trust me, you can still use it to make incredible photographs. The speed of it really makes it great in low light as well. That's all. Grab one. Don't grab one. You're probably fine either way.. ; )(oh, I forgot one more bad thing.. (Sorry). It does NOT focus very fast, and it is definitely NOT silent. It has loud, and slow autofucus.

Why have I waited so long!!!

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

I have been doing photography for 12 years now and have just been making do with what I have. I finally broke down after one of my lenses rolled into a waterfall. I guess I can say that I am grateful because I love my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens. It is perfect for what I need and the crisp clear photos are a hit. Thank you!

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

I mostly use this lens for portrait photos, but once in a while would use is for landscape photos. I love the bokeh that this lens produces, and as well as the sharpness of it. But the best thing about this lens is the price, worth every penny. The only reason why I gave this lens 4 out of 5 stars is because with my Nikon D300 the sharpness drops of after F2.8.

This lens is a charm. Super sharp. However the unfortunate thing is that the aperture control ring doesn't work with a Nikon D610. Aperture has to be manually controlled on the body of the camera.

A very cost effective, tack-sharp lens that offers very pleasing Bokeh when used wide open. Perfect for waste-to-head portrait work on DX Format cameras, as it allows 6-8' between the subject and photographer. Wonderful for night photography. The build quality is very solid.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

I've used this since I owned a D40 over 6 years ago. It's a terrific lightweight lens for both DX and FX cameras and not bad as a manual focus lens (as it is on Nikon's cheaper cameras). It's extremely sharp and almost distortion free, even wide open, making it great for products and portraits. It's fun to use freelensing as well. I find that the build quality, while excellent, is not as nice as say the 1.4 AF-D version of the lens, but it feels nicer than the newer G lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

This is the third time I have purchased this exact lens. Not because it is faulty or cheap, but because I got such good photos with it, I had to buy another two for family members who were envious of my results. I absolutely love using this for portraits of my family, as it can capture lots of light, great bokeh and quick action. The only downside is that my Nikon camera body cannot power the autofocus, which I would only occasionally use anyways. Manual focus is the way to go!

Purchased to use for portraits and to augment the 18-105, f3.5-5.6 kit lens that came with my D7100. Love the added speed and sharpness, and autofocus is very fast despite not being an AF-S lens. Hope to try it with a reversal ring for macro applications (since it has an aperture ring). Versatile, and truly a bargain.

This was a great upgrade from the kit lens (18-55 mm) if you're not looking to spend a lot of money. The prime lens gives you that quality shallow depth of field without spending hundreds on a zoom lens with a high f-stop. Do be aware that the autofocus is NOT compatible with some Nikon cameras!!

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens:

I bought a grey market import for $. The US would have been $, but I felt that such a simple prime may be more durable and have less issues than the non pro zooms. For the price of a couple of polarizer filters you get really a sharp, lightweight lens, It has nice bokeh, contrast and shallow depth of field.I can use it on DX cameras as a 75mm equiv portrait lens, that can be good also for live performances like music and dance where it is possible to get close.I can also use it on the full frame as a regular lens.I prefer to shoot with zooms as I mostly do photojournalism and I have the f:2.8s 17-55mm for DX and 28-70mm for FX, but they are a lot heavier to carry. It is great to have also if you have one of those kit consumer zooms like the 18-105 mm and similar. you can carry this 50mm in the bag as a lightweight and higher quality option when the occasion arises. This does not autofocus on the cheaper DX cameras like the D3000 and D5000 series, for those there is the newer, twice as expensive 50mm that has faster and more silent AF.But for 100 dollars you can not go wrong. great sharp lens, that I may use occasionally, when I need to shoot with 2 cameras,, or when I need to take some available light sharp portraits on a DX camera.
