If you can't afford a Gretag color checker, these cards are a great way to get consistent color. Yes, you can get white balance off your subject's white shirt, or use the auto mode, or guestimate when you open the images in photoshop, but there's something almost magic about the color you'll get if you use a real gray card to set your white balance. The best part of this particular version is you get a cute baby-sized grey card that fits in your pocket and is perfect for when you're out with a point-and-shoot.

I got this card to set the 'custom white balance' for my digicams.

It does quite well, although some tweaking in your favorite photo editor is still required to get the most from your file.

Main gripe is that it is basically grey paper mounted on plain cardboard. It is already warping. Don't get it even slightly wet - easily discolors and don't leave it in the interior of a hot car - fades. In other words, great for indoor shoots, not so great for the outdoors in even the slightest of extremes.

I found that the back white has dent. Though you mainly use the gray side, you may time to time want to use the white side too. A dent in white side is bad.

I'm a semi-professional photographer and I use these cards often for determining exposure at weddings and personal photo shoots. The cards help me insure I'm getting the right exposure with minimal editing later in the office.

As a gray card, I use it to get consistent skin tone exposure for video which saves a lot of time from Color Correction. The white card to balance color temperture. A few minutes of prep saves hours in post. My only problem is that it really doesn't seem to be made from high quality materials.

Comments about Kodak R-27 Gray Cards:

The reason to have a gray card is it gives you a way to get repeatable standard measurement of a scene, and a true neutral tone for color balancing. You can take a light meter reading that will not be effected by backlighting etc. This is just a good tool to have when you need it.

Comments about Kodak R-27 Gray Cards:

On occasion I test various of my white balance "gray cards". Colorchecker, Robin Myers, WhiBal, etc.

It is my impression this Kodak card is very accurate for white balance use as well as its main purpose as for an exposure reference. The method I use is to shoot my D700 using a fixed white balance temp in menu, a challenging indoor light, and several targets together. Then I use NX2 white balance tool. Recent test, Colorchecker gray box no. 2 was 0.7 red, 2.47 blue slope, Kodak card was 0.7 red 2.48 blue slope. Not likely to notice this difference with your eye. All had the same red slope, some had more blue to 2.51. Not sure if this is accurate but it seems close enough to me.

Only disadvantage is that it is paint on paper layered on cardboard. Same with Colorchecker. will wearout eventually.

It astounds me how much better photos are with the correct exposure and White Balance. Even just a third stop off and/or the color being slightly off can make a photo humdrum. When eveything is right the photo just clicks - especially portraits. Good price. Old school - just like me.
You get a full sized card for indoors and a 4 X 5 inch card for your camera bag.

Comments about Kodak R-27 Gray Cards:

Sturdy card, very easy to use, the size is perfect, must use it for the white balance, white side for the highlights and the grey side for the white balnce. Does the job it's suppose to do.

Comments about Kodak R-27 Gray Cards:

I am so stupid! I purchased this for custom white balance when I could have gone to a local craft store and bought a white poster board and had it do the same thing. Save some $$$ and go to your local craft store!

Comments about Kodak R-27 Gray Cards:

Despite the miraculous performance of today's cameras the simple old-fashioned gray card still serves it's purpose for those that are serious about photography. However, as with all things, you have to know how to use it. Fortunately there are clear and extensive directions enclosed with the cards.
