I purchased this kit so that I could have some kind of lighting for my cinema 101 project since the community college I attend has nothing in the way of lighting gear for students to check out. In addition to my shoot, the kit ended up being set up and struck about ten times in the last two weeks for three of my classmates shoots, I was using black wrap to control the light ( be careful to allow top ventilation if you do this, as the plastic retaining ring in the socket may melt).
After all this (including a few spills) the kit is still operable, though I've had to do some minor repair on one of the sockets. The stands have proven to be sturdy considering all the handling abuse they've taken. The kit has great versatility, providing a key (spotted with black wrap) a fill (bouncing with a reflector board) and a kicker/backlight (using the boom to get near the ground). The case provided with the kit holds everything nicely, with a little wiggle room to stuff some extension cords and a roll of black wrap inside.
For the price of the kit, there is really not much to complain about it. Though the set up is in general a bit flimsy and fragile, you still get more than your moneys worth. If the kit could be improved upon without raising the price, I would suggest weighting the stands legs and replacing all plastic hardware with aluminum or steel. All things considered the price is really the strong point of the whole kit.
If your a wanna-be cinematographer I highly recommend this kit. You'll be able to grasp lighing theory in a hands on way and practice without going into serious debt.

Simply do not buy this product! I have never written a review ever on B&H, but I have never come across a product this bad in all my audio and photo purchasing life. Unless you like being struck with pangs of frustration, then you should find a better quality lighting kit. Let me take you through my experience. It is true what the other reviewers say about this being somewhat confusing to assemble. But sometimes you have to just use your brain a little more. After assembly I plugged them in to receive their warm glow. . . Then the light switch doesn't work. . . then a bulb blows after I "gently" move the stand (the bulbs are poor too) . . . then I go to turn the remaining two lights off and one won't turn off and the other has a mind of its own and turns itself on and off at will. . . I had replacement sockets sent, which were supposed to have working switches; well they didn't even turn on at all. At least the original sockets worked for a little bit. . . So after receiving my replacement - replacement sockets I thought "well things are going to be better now, I'll just hang on to these instead of getting a real lighting kit." Well the new replacements pretty much do the same thing. Think to yourself, what do you want most out of a product? At least what do you want at the most basic level? I don't want the equipment to become an obstacle to my original goal. . . which was if I remember correctly to take pictures. . .? I just want this stuff to work. . . and it does not. Thus anyone looking at this product should just invest in a quality lighting kit and at least know that it will work when you want it to. I'm never buying impact again and I hope I can save someone else from a similar fate.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:

I'm a video professional using Ikan LED500's every day and other professional equipment but, when I wanted a basic 3-point lighting system for a personal side project doing indoor interviews, corporate videos, and documentaries, I purchased this system and I'm glad I did.I was skeptical, based on some of the negative reviews, but after doing my research I simply couldn't find a better all-in-one value. You just have to know what you're getting into before purchasing this and keep your expectations grounded in reality. You get what you pay for in this industry, we all know that. Are they glorified clamp lights? Sure, maybe a little better than clamp lights. Are the stands going to hold up? (see what I did there?). Sure, as long as I'm gentle and take care of them. The umbrellas do the job, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were to shred if I open them... aggressively. The bag is a welcome edition. It lacks substantial padding but is made of surprisingly durable material. Is this kit gonna last if I use it every day, multiple times a day, dragging it to different sets, inside/outside, rain/sunshine, trucking through the rainforest, throwing it together, breaking it down... probably not.Is it a great starter kit with the potential to last if taken care of? Absolutely.I'd recommend buying sandbags for the stands as they're made from a light aluminum-like material and could easily tip over.I took one star off because, when assembled, the lights don't easily fit back into the carrying case. With a little trial-and-error I was able to zip up the case, but portions are poking up through the material. Serious issue? Not really. The provided bulbs do the job but I'll most likely replace them with CFL bulbs.All-in-all, this is a wonderful starter kit, works as advertised, and fits my needs perfectly.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:

I bought this kit about 6-7 years ago to do some portrait work, and didn't think that I would ever use it more than a few times. Now that I am shooting video, I am dusting it back off and adapting it for CFL lighting. It's a lot of bang for the buck, and those stands are as sturdy as any others I've used over the years. The kit is lightweight and portable, and much, much better than many of the inexpensive light kits that I am seeing online for around $100-$200. There is no comparison between this kit and the other ones with soft boxes that won't even go together correctly. I have no problem using the hot lights, and enjoy this kit, but there are ways to convert it to cooler and more energy efficient bulbs, and there are adapters for making them accommodate CFLs in small groups. I am glad that I decided to hang onto this kit because it is proving to be an invaluable part of my gear closet, and I might just pick up another one for shoots where I need more lighting. The bag is also made of sturdy material, and won't disappoint the professional who is used to solid bags. There is a dimmer adapter that can also be used with CFLs that can be dimmed (but the bulbs must be dimmable!) and I highly recommend the adapter for modifying the lights. While the reflectors are not ProFotos, which I have owned, the price also isn't going to break the bank, and there is no reason to feel that these lights are any less effective at what they do. The modifying choices are fewer with hot lights, but the umbrellas work fine and are made of good material, and again, with the CFL version, the soft box options becomes available and more practical. Impact makes a nice product -- so much better than some cheap cowboy studio lights I got off another site. Those were junk, and I can honestly state that there is much wisdom in buying something a little more expensive just to get something that will hold up over time and use. Nothing is worse for business than equipment failure on the job, just make sure that you go through all of the wattage math when plugging in hot lights of this voltage when working with household outlets, and spread the load with extension cords of a good thick gauge. And wear the gloves!! These things will fry your fingers if you aren't careful. Always read up on safety measures for working with hot lights if you've not had professional instruction on how to do so. Thanks, B&H, for a product that has lasted years and is still bringing me great results!

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:

I am doing some product photography, mostly tabletop stuff, and needed some professional type lights, got this kit on recommendation of a photographer friend and love it. I have the mini boom and smaller reflector set up as an overhead light on my table, and the others for front/side lights. Although this was one of the least expensive 3-light kits anywhere, I was very pleased with the quality. The stands feel very substantial and the switches are nice and firm. I think this is a great choice for a hobbyist or part time photographer.

Comments about Impact Three-Light Mini-Boom Kit:

This product is suitable for someone experimenting with lighting who doesn't want to go all out on his/her first purchase. My only problem with the kit was that the overhead boom ballast kept rejecting the tungsten bulbs - one fell out of its socket and the other exploded!
After speaking with the manufacturer (Impact) they suggested that the bulb bundled with the kit is not suitable and should be contacting B&H to make them aware of the problem. They suggested a SP32/50K Spiral Fluorescent Lamp (32W/120V).
B&H was quick to resolve the problem and sent me 3 new bulbs - ITEM EISP32. I've only used the new fluorescent bulb for a short period of time so can't say whether the issue has been resolved.
Don't really care for the blueish light the fluorescent puts out but it helps resolve my shadows from the left and right tungstens so that's all that matters.

I am a motivational speaker and was in need of a lighting kit to setup my home studio. My cousin, who is also is a professional cinematographer suggested this kit. After tons of research, I decided to go with it and I do not regret it one bit!! I particularly like the versatility and sturdiness of it and the fact that it comes in its own really cool carrying case:-) I highly recommend it to anyone interested!! God Bless

I really did not know what to expect from this lighting kit. I needed more light to do family pictures during gatherings, i.e., semi-portraitures. This three light kit is perfect. The stands are stable, the light is just the right amount and color and the reflectors get the light back onto the subject.

The kit also comes with a great bag that contains all of the parts and pieces that will keep it all together when you need to move it to your next location.

You get what it tells you. The case it great, the lights work. You have to completely disassemble the lights to fit them in the case, which takes time and offers more opportunity to break the bulbs.Every review I saw stated that this was good for home studio, and not easy to move, so I knew that coming in. Not super durable, but again, for the money, it's great. The stands are the same as what comes with a Tota. I like this kit. It saved me a lot of money and does the job. I don't mind the assembly because I'm not doing it every day. For a REAL pro, maybe not the kit for you. For a semi-pro, definitely a good buy.
