From the moment I unboxed this thing of beauty I was in love. I bought it so that I could have the quality I get from my 50 and 35mm primes but with the versatility of a zoom. This met the challenge quite easily. I wish I'd purchased this a few years ago when I bought the 14mm wide angle (which I've now sold to get this one, hehe). It has already replaced my 18-200 kit lens as my everyday lens. It's super fast and the images are amazing. I've used it in the studio quite a bit as well as out and about to include a recent trip to and old abandoned sanitarium in Beelitz, Germany.

I was thinking of selling my 50mm 1.4 now that I had purchased a 17-55mm 2.8 because the 2.8 was likely fast enough for my needs and I enjoyed the range it offered. I decided to do a side by side hand held comparison before selling the 50mm and the images in this review were both taken at ISO 200 / 50mm / f/2.8 / 1/400 shutter speed. The time between capture was the moment it took to take off one lens and put on the other. I took several photos of this flower and adjacent flowers to check consistency. I expected that the 17-55mm would have better bokeh but I was truly surprised at the vivid color range and superior focus of the 50mm. Because of this, I decided to keep the 50mm and return the recently purchased 17-55mm. For less money, I will be covering the 17-55mm range with a 35mm 1/8G and aTokina 12-28mm f/4 and the 50mm 1.4. I was hoping to get by without changing lenses but my bottom line is always going to be image quality. The attached images have had zero post processing done to them other than to save as a maximum res .jpg. The camera used was a D300.

Nice range. Paired with the 70-200 this lens fills a short range void. I still like the 35 and 50 1.8 primes but this offers more flexibility. Great for portraits

        Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

I read many reviews about this Lens but could't decide to buy OR not to buy. Finally decided to get it. I put it on my New D-7100, took many shoots with it, in day light, clouds, indoor photos, natural light source, group photos etc., in the beginning I compared these pics with the kit lens many time but with many images I saw a big difference of Sharpness because 17-55 is way better than the kit lens 18-105 or 18-55 etc., it is wide angle & f2.8 is real benefit.

It's pricey & very bulky .75 Kg weight but has an excellent build quality, superior glass, fast & accurate focus, gives sharpness & a real professional look.

        Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

I bought a used on from B&H recently and all I can say is Alleluja! Since I'm sticking with DX, I finally got the lens I've wanted for a long time and it delivers the goods! I've been shooting corporate events and studio portraits for years and I've always used prime lenses. I got tired of carrying two bodies and changing out 3 primes so just before a recent shooting event, I bought the 17-55 and I'm in heaven.....I should not have waited this long. It gives you the sharpness of primes with just enough aperture at 2.8 to get crisp, clean, bright shots without having to constantly scramble as I had to do with primes. I wouldn't even think of a third party lens, this Nikkor is the best, built like a tank, fast focus, just brilliant. Go for it.

        Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

I have owned this lens for about 14 months now, and have taken almost 5000 photos with it. Yes -- it was expensive. Yes -- it is heavy. But the images that this lens produces are remarkable. Sharpness, contrast and color are always excellent. And autofocus is fast and accurate.

On a recent trip to New Zealand, I carried three lenses. Of the 1100 images that I captured, over 900 were taken using this lens. For landscape and scenery, this is my goto lens. And the extra weight of the lens reflects its rugged construction; I didn't feel as if I needed to be overly conscious of protecting it in crowded shooting situations.

It is also excellent on special occasions with our twin Granddaughters. It is fast enough that I normally only use flash indoors when I want fill in backlit settings.

This lens is an excellent example of the old maxim that you get what you pay for. I only wish that Nikon produced a longer DX zoom of similar quality.

Now that I've had the 17-55mm, f/2.8 a little while, and continue to learn more about shooting different situations, the more results I'm getting from this super piece of glass ... recent shots have been just top notch ... did "Cruisin' on the Coast" in Biloxi and a plantation near home and both sets show that I'm steadily improving ... let the samples say the rest!

                Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

I was looking for a lens that had a decent wide angle but still had some zoom functionality, as well as at least a f/2.8 to use in place of several different lens in my bag. This lens is very nice. It takes great photos. The autofocus is pretty fast, very smooth and pretty pretty accurate. I also like that you can put it in autofocus mode, and still manually focus while in autofocus mode. The one thing I dont like, and Id assume mine isnt defective and its just how this lens works, is that even when you get to the max left and right ranges on the focus, you can keep turning the focus ring infinitely. There is no hard stop at the ends of the focus. Outside of that, this makes for a great general purpose all around versatile lens with great quality. The front glass is beautiful as well. For those that do HDSLR video..the autofocus in video mode is pretty terrible. Like most other lenses I have tried (On a D7000).

Have had this lens for 10 mos, and there isn't much more than can be said.Tested it against the Nikon 16-85 & Tokina 12-28, looking for a walk-around lens (one that stays on the camera most of the time). The 16-85 lacked the IQ of the 17-55, and having the constant f2.8 was more important than VR. (Which is why I didn't test the Nikon 16-35 f4.)Tokina was missing missing 35mm & low 50's focal lengths, which were very important. Also had flare issues.17-55 has a good range, though I miss 16mm, and that large f2.8 aperture is great in low light. Lens shined when shooting Longwood Gardens Christmas display.Annoying weakness: Distant Landscapes. It's okay, but feel that it should do better. Seen great results with the Zeiss 100mm, but that's not a fair comparison because it's a different focal length. Suspect that the Nikon 24mm and the Zeiss 21mm should outclass the 17-55, but look at the prices & lack of versatility.

                  Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

Upgraded from a Nikon D5100 to a D7100 recently, so it was time to upgrade to a "quality" lens, so after studying reviews, I decided to do the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 ED ... Looks like I made the right choice ... I am NOT a pro or even very experienced (yet), but I enjoy photography, so take my review with a grain of salt ... read quite a few reviews from different places before I would sink $ in a lens (cost more than the camera), but I often heard ... buy good glass, then buy the camera with the money you have left ... hehehe ...The D7100 is not the best camera made, but it is a very good DX product and has really good features, so I took the new camera out using the Nikon 18-140mm lens that I had at the time and it did a really good job ... pleased with the initial camera trial. Did a class reunion and GKs to the zoo recently with the new 17-55mm f/2.8 and VERY pleased with the results ... several of the class reunion close-up portraits (with my SB700 speedlite) were super and same with the zoo pix ... had a pix of a gorilla and an orangutan that were top-notch ... still think that I need to "learn the lens" and see what works best with it and how it performs with different settings to make all the photos come out like "some" of the photos ... but all are really good and can't wait to get out and tackle more.

                  Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

As lens designs go, this thing is probably the most ancient among the Nikon DX line of lenses as well as being the most expensive ($!) and 2nd heaviest (after porcine 18-300 mm lens). Despite seemingly all the negative accolades, I just love what this lens can do in combination with my D7100. D7100's 24mp sensor really brings out the best in this lens. Great color, contrast, and bokeh. Sharp too! Build quality is on par with Nikon's 24-70 mm FX lens. It's overall IQ is almost as good as 24-70 mm f 2.8/D800 combo, almost.

                    Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

Everything about this lens is great. The focus speed, the weight and DOF from the f2.8, I love it all.

I'm a part-time photographer shooting mostly portraits, creative stuff and some event photography. I started with D70s then upgraded to D300. I wanted to buy more lenses but with a cropped sensor camera I really didn't want to spend tons of money on other lenses, if that makes sense.

I was waiting on going to Full Frame camera to start purchasing more lenses. This lens has kept me happy for a long time now. I recently switched to Canon 5D Mark III, so this lens will probably be the only one on my Nikon D300 from now on.

I use this lens for portraits and landscape. The aperture is fast and the photos are sharp. It's a quiet zoom. A little heavy, but nothing unreasonable. I'd recommend this to anyone with an APS-C sized sensor...

I bought this lens for replace mi Sigma 17-70 f 2.8-4. I read and study a lot of reviews before purchase the lens. Instead of the sigma the nikkor has great color rendition, it's not the most sharp lens, but the color outpout delivers punch colors. I mounted on a D7100 and they are a great couple, good balanced. This lens is HEAVY, premium build quality. At 55 mm and f2.8 it's soft. At the range of 17 to 45 I think delivers the best results in terms of sharpness, at 17 mm and F2.8 is very sharp.

                      Comments about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED:

I use this for landscape, travel and general photography. This is an old design, I know, and probably the most expensive dx lens.

But it is as sharp as my 35 dx prime and 50 1.8D and has better corner definition. It is sharper across the frame than my 16-85 and 18-140 (though granted without the reach or either). It's bright, contrasty and sharp across the frame from 2.8 on.

This is the lens you glue to your D71K.
