I bought this new 322RC2 to replace an old vertical type grip action ball head that I had used for years. I didn't like the way the camera body was so far away from the pivot ball with the vertical grip system. This was not really a problem during landscape shots, but became a real nuisance during portrait shots. Why? Because you had all that weight just hanging out there about 8" to the side of the tripod, away from the ball pivot point. I have a Canon 40D, and with the battery pack installed and a F2.8 17-55 zoom attached, things would really get shaky. Talk about stress test your tripod to the max! Then if I threw on the Canon 580 flash and a diffuser to the mix, it would get down right scary! My tripod weighs about 8 lbs and I consider it to be very stable normally. But with all that weight hanging off to the side like that, one wrong move and the whole works could end up tipping right over! Plus, I had to wait for the camera to stop moving before I could even take the shot.

Add the Manfrotto 322RC2 to the picture. This new horizontal grip system solves all of that because it keeps the camera body as close to the ball pivot point as any other standard non quick release ball head does. And with an 11 lb rating you can put a good amount of equipment on it. When I tilt my camera setup to the side now for portrait style shots, it is rock steady. The difference is like night and day. This ball head design is simply brilliant. This is a perfect ball head for the person that makes a lot of adjustments on the go like I do. Movement from shot to shot is quite fluid in use and yet very solid once released. This is a perfect head for the nature photographer that likes to move around a lot to get all different types of shots. You can set the camera into any position you would like with a little maneuvering and twisting of the ball head. The person who said in their review that the camera can not be pointed up with this ball head is incorrect. I have pointed my camera straight up in both landscape and portrait modes. You just need to spend a few minutes with it at first and play around with the mechanics of how the ball head can be manipulated. Once you see how it's done, it's a piece of cake to place your camera in any position you like.

This is one of the nicest accessories you can add to any Digital or 35mm-SLR tripod system.

PS: I don't recommend this for shooting video. It is not nearly fluid enough for that and your hand would get tired trying to keep the grip squeezed.

Now I love this head, it still serves me very very well. However I bought it over a year ago and I guess back then (and when they first came out) they had a production problem. I am missing a few screws here and there, thats ok, but the head loosens itself over time. All of you should be on the look out for this. No matter how tight you wind the friction gauge it will get looser and looser to the point that eventually just the act of putting a body with a 2.8 lens on it will immediately cause the head to droop forward or to whatever side.

Now at the beginning I said I still use this head and am very pleased with it, that is because I took the head completely apart, found the problem (with the spring we believe) and put it all back together, now the head is extremely rigid until the handle is pulled.

I just wanted to put this review out there for those that might be experiencing this same problem, find a mechanically inclined friend and go to work on the head, maybe you'll be able to save it. Best of luck.

Comments about Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head:

I use this Grip Action Ball Head on my MT190XPro3 aluminum tripod. I like how I can turn the camera so easily and when I release the handle it holds the position for my shot. I really like the fact that it has a safety lock on the bracket that attaches to the bottom of the camera. It also shows which direction the lens should be by several arrows on the bottom of the bracket. It holds my camera without any problems. I really like the whole setup. So glad I got these two pieces added to my NOW HAVE list. I feel they will be with me for many years to come.Bottom Line. The head is heavy but does it's job quite well. I didn't want a flimsy piece of equipment. Both the tripod and Ball Head are very strong and will hold a heavier camera and lens.I don't believe you can go wrong buying these two pieces of equipment.

This is excellent for medium weight camera/lens combos in any position or heavier setups in horizontal position ONLY. my D800 + 70-124 combo would not stay in desired position; sliding down slowly. Grip needs to be much tighter.

bought this head about 2.5 years ago. Loved it the 1st year; then noticed blur in long exposures when camera was at a slight tilt; now there is not stability at all. Too bad because I loved the operation, but it won't last.

Love it! can put your camera in any direction, locks pretty quick and holds that position. I hated the old head I had where I had to turn the lock until my camera locks in place, always losing few degrees in different directions. Now it's pretty much point, lock, and shoot.

Comments about Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head:

With a ball head I was anticipating complete control over movement. This head will barely let you look up past level which is slightly inconvenient. It's sturdy and has a friction control which is helpful. It makes packing tripod legs in a bag more difficult which effects how transportable your tripod will be overall. All in all a decent tripod head that keeps the camera sturdy and can hold quite a bit of weight. Some access issues though.

Comments about Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head:

I purchased the Manfrotto Grip Action Ball Head and have used it for a couple of weeks now. It is mounted on carbon fiber tripod legs. I purchased this with a bit of trepidation since my last tripod head was a ball head and did not hold my DLSR and lens, particularly in the vertical position. I am primarily a landscape and night photographer so a firm hold is crucial. I have been very happy with this head to date. It handles the weight of my camera and long lens in all positions very well. At first I was a bit concerned that the grip action seemed "jerky", but after a few minor adjustments, I found the right tension, and now the grip action is wonderful, and I love the level on top. It is a bit heavy, but I knew that when I purchased it. At this point in time, I am very happy with this purchase.

It doesn't get any easier than this to set up a camera shot on a tripod. The ease of framing a shot just by squeezing the handle allows you to focus on looking in the viewfinder to frame your shot, not searching for and turning the right knobs.

Comments about Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head:

As others have indicated, the grip is a bit stiff, and the action isn't very smooth right out of the box. I'm assuming with regular use this will improve.
It appears very well made. It held postions perfectly, and moved where I needed. Most importantly, I feel secure with my Nikon attached to this head.
