I primarily bought this for bird photography to extend the reach of my Nikon 2.8 70-200 VR1 lens. It works well with the lens and so far I have been able to get some great shots with this combination. Photos tend to be a little soft if I zoom all the way to 340 and stop down to the lowest f stop but I am able to get beautiful detailed bird photos if I'm not at either of these ends. Although you loose 1 1/2 stops using the teleconverter this was the perfect solution for me as it was must more cost effective than getting a larger lens.

I bought this TC to get more extension from my 70-200 2.8 VR II. I knew from reading the reviews that some degradation of image quality was understood, but after testing and using it extensively with a D800 for about 3 weeks I was not happy with the degree of sharpness that was lost. I tried the TC at an air show and the number of acceptable images dropped greatly - that may have been due to the impact on the AF efficiency. I took it on vacation and shot some bird images with it - the same results. I had a great opportunity to test it side by side with just the bare 70-200 when I found a pair of trumpeter swans preparing to roost for the night in a wildlife refuge. The distance was significant and the birds were stationary so I had plenty of time to swap the lens with TC back and forth with the lens without it, keeping the same basic settings. I noticed a bit of color on the necks of the birds. Through the lens you could see that they were wearing blue bands with white numbers on them. Images shot with the TC were not sharp enough to distinguish the numbers well - they were unreadable. Images shot with just the 70-200 and cropped showed the numerals sharply! I developed an even greater appreciation for the capabilities of the 70-200 alone! Back went the TC to B&H and all went smoothly on the return. This is the first time I have been disappointed in Nikon gear. Perhaps it was not a good unit.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II:

After not finding the Illudium Space Modulator I was looking for, I ordered this 1.7X TC.
The first thing I did was lens tests with my Nikon 300mm f/4D; Tripod, lens test charts I found online, and MT-636 wireless release on mirror-up mode were used.
I was frankly amazed at the results. Could not find ANY differences in sharpness with the adaptor attached. Contrast was nice, no distortion at the edges. Tests were with and without my B+W circular polarizer. Images of scenery outback were clear as crystal. Haven't had a chance to shoot birds or other wildlife yet. AF seems to work OK, but I mainly focus manually. Mars shots will have to wait til I have destroyed lunar object blocking view.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II:

This teleconverter is a perfect match for my 70-200 f2.8 zoom. To my surprise, it also works with the 200-500 f5.6 on my D800 under bright daylight. The auto focus does slow down quite a bit with the 200-500 but still works.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II:

Recently bought a used previous generation of Nikon's 70-200 VR and the combo with the 1.7x was NOT as good as my 20 year old 300 f4 ED prime. Seller's remorse set in!

I just traded for the new 7-200 VRII and they work extremely well together! ;-)

Attached find a pic with the combo (using a 910 flash with a fresnel lens for longer projection) of a local blue heron. I had to crop it tightly to show the bird which demonstrates great optical qualities indeed. Very pleased now.

Much easier to carry than the 300, too.

Oh yes, though it fits in my pocket, it was hard to take out and I *GASP* dropped the teleconverter on smooth concrete. It bounced and landed on a shelve TOTALLY unfazed. WOW ;-)
Plan to never repeat this foul up.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II:

You really need a fast lens for this teleconverter to be worthwhile. Would not fit on my Tamron 300/2.8 AF, so I tried with Nikkor 300 f/4, 80-400 VRII, and new 200-500 f5.6 and needed really high ISO's. Probably would of been good with the 70-200 2.8 VRII. Already have Tamron 1.4 and 2.0 and they are pretty darn good for TC's. Thus returning this TC and will get a new lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II:

I decided to get the TC-17E II over the TC-20 because of the less f-stop loss. I am using this with my 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens and it works great. Very quick on the focus. The D810 handles this combination extremely well.

I've got 1.4, 2.0 and this 1.7 teleconverters and this one is a perfect intermediate size for extending my telephoto lenses. I use this mostly for my 300mm f/4E PF ED-IF. It provides a focal length extension from 300mm to 510mm and adds very little aperture impact. It works flawlessly and is invisible to most applications. It's a perfect selection for most extender applications.

Was leery after reading reviews but with B&H's excellent return policy decided to give it try. Never was happy with converters in film days but my option has changed with this product. Using for backyard birds a and some sports with a f4 300 on a D600. Metering and focus work very well.

Been having this a little while, but wanted to wait till I used it a few times ... the times I've used it, there is ZERO loss of image quality that I can tell ... I purchased it to use with my Nikon D7100 and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, but was disappointed to find out it is not compatible to my Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 (DX) lens ... booooo ... guess it was made for FX is my reasoning ... would have had a LOT more use for it if used with the 17-55 ... but great photos ... so mission accomplished ...

I use it mainly on my 70-200 f4 and no noticeable drop of image quality. AF works fine, maybe a tiny bit slower on the long end.

I used the 1.7 TC on my 300 4.0 with good results when I followed the advice of others and stopped down two stops. The 300 with the 1.7 TC makes a very good tool for capturing closeup shots of flowers and stationary subjects. I was able to capture some very sharp images of my dog…the dog was not moving at the time and I used a monopod for stability.

I use the 1.4 TC with the 300mm 4.0 for birding and wildlife with outstanding results. Haven't yet had the opportunity to use the 1.7 TC. But, I expect that it will be adequate when the light is good and the subject is stationary.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II:

I live on the coast and enjoy doing surf photography. I have been using a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR (the first one) and I have been continuously impressed with it's amazing quality - which I partially attribute to its VR capabilities. I needed something with a longer reach (I was thinking about 300mm so I could hand hold the camera) and so did my research and it came down to a teleconverter with my 70-200 or getting a 300 mm f4 from Nikon. I decided to try the least expensive option of getting the teleconverter, (based on many reviews). I found a used one at B&H and so I nabbed it.I am pretty astonished at how well it keeps the high quality of my original lens. I am shooting outdours and able to stop it down a couple clicks to f8 or so and still shoot at high speed. I did find the contrast was slightly diminished, but easily correctable in processing. More importantly, the image is still sharp. How sharp? Look at these 2 surfers shot using hand-held D610 with the 70-200 and the TCE. These were at 290 and 320 effective focal length, iso 250 and I ended up with about 1/400 sec shutter speed.( I will opt for faster in the future and turn up the iso on my D610 to whatever to get it. I processed these in Lightroom and Nik. I am very pleased I went this way. I have many other Nikon lenses without VR, but I don't think this would come out so well without image stabilization. Many, many years ago I tried a cheap teleconverter and was so disappointed. Not now. This is a true advancement and a keeper.

I was skeptical about moving from a 1.4x to a 1.7x, but the images are good, and the response time is almost as good.

I've read good and bad reviews for this product from various web sites and professional publications over the past 2 years. I always do a lot of research on the products i buy before pulling the trigger. Working with both Nikon D80's and Nikon D800's the TC 17E lived up to my expectaions when shooting the Nikon 70mm-200mm 2.8 and the 200mm-400mm 2.8 lenses. I found no loss in photo quality shooting any combination of camera, TC-17E and lens. If you can adjust ISO, shutter speed and aperture, hold your camera steady and use the VR settings, you're going to get wonderful photos. Take care of your equipment and it should work great for years.

I was looking to extend the reach of my Nikon 70-200mm f4.0 telephoto lens and thought to give this teleconverter a try. It is amazing. The clarity is really unaffected and other than losing a couple stops it is a great addition.

I just recently purchased the TC-17E II 1.7x teleconverter for photographing my friend's 50+ men's baseball team which plays on weekends. I was very please with the teleconverting strength of this lens and the resultant photos were bright and colorful and well focused. Of course I'm shooting outdoors, so the loss of one full F stop did not affect my photos in the lease.Bob H.
