Comments about Gitzo G2271M Rationelle Head:

I use this for still photography, mainly now with a Fuji X system. Originally I bought this model because I specifically did not want to invest in a quick release plate system, and I wanted the smallest, lightest model. I do really like several things about it:
    1) It is small and lightweight.
    2) It has a great build quality, making it a pleasure to use.
    3) The fluid effect is very nice for moving subjects as it provides adequate stability with the ability to follow the subject.
    4) The 3-sided shape of the handles is just right.

Since then I've decided to get a RRS AS L-bracket for my Fuji camera to make it quicker to mount, more secure to mount, and provide a better way to deal with portrait mode shots. I will be getting an AS clamp to put on this head, probably from Kirk. I am re-evaluating my choice of which one of the 3 Gitzo siblings I chose: the G2271M over the G2270M and G2272M. Here are some things for you to consider before you make your choice:
    1) The G2271M platform is too short to convenient for using the 1/4" screw! Also the range of motion of the screw is very short, allowing very little balancing of the camera/lens on the head. If you really plan to use the 1/4" screw to mount your camera, consider the G2270M with its much longer platform!
2)If you happen to use Manfrotto 501PL compatible plates, consider the G2272M as it is compatible with them! However, be warned that these heads do not provide sufficiently fluid motion for video purposes. If you want a similar Gitzo head for video, consider the G2380 instead, or move up to a Sachtler.
    3) If you use the AS plate system, this model is a good choice, all you have to do is mount an AS clamp on it, it is an appropriate sized platform for that purpose. This is what I am planning to use it for going forward.
Hope that helps someone figure out the right head!

Comments about Gitzo G2271M Rationelle Head:

I bought this to use with my Fuji XE1, in particular with various Nikkor AIs and Zeiss ZF telephoto lenses adapted to Fuji. These are inherently slow to use with manual focus and a tripod is appropriate in my mind. I was specifically looking for a head without quick-release adapters as it is either the adapter or the lens that mounts to the tripod, not the camera body. Exceeding my expectations are the construction quality, the compact size and modest weight, and the fluid effect, making it useful for videos or follow-motion still photography. There are 2 quirks you should be aware of: 1) there is little room to reach the screw from underneath making it slow for big hands like mine, and 2) the tilt movement is in the middle, rather than on the top, limiting the head in my mind to leveling panoramic format, but not good for portrait format. I think the design is more based for medium and large format still cameras, and video cameras. I personally don't see this as a show-stopper as I have several other tripods as a fall-back.

Comments about Gitzo G2271M Rationelle Head:

I bought this to use with my new Manfrotto 055CX tripod, to replace the 808RC4 head that came as part of a kit. I specifically didn't want a quick-release plate to use with my Fuji XE1 and Nikon D700 and film cameras and many lenses, and I didn't want the complex controls like the 808RC4 has for spring counterbalance controls.
The first thing I noticed is how well the Gito G2271M fit the tripod, like they were made for each other, and how much lighter the head was, next how much better the Gitzo build quality is than Manfrotto (even though they now belong to the same parent company). The combination reminds me of my old Tiltall, but with sturdier by far, the tripod much more versatile for adjustments, and all with higher grade, more modern materials.
There are two specific things to note about the head:
      1) the only item I don't like, because of my large hands it is a little difficult to reach the screw head underneath the plate to mount the camera. Once the screw is in the camera thread, tightening the much larger lock nut is very easy and positive however.
      2) on the unexpected positive side the "fluid-effect" system is very good and may obviate the need for a separate fluid head for short simple videos or for action photos with telephoto lenses - I look forward to try this.

Comments about Gitzo G2271M Rationelle Head:

Having found it almost impossible to find a head that is not a quick release type I was very happy to take this out of the packing and find that it is very well constructed. It really is a pleasure to use.

I do not trust quick release heads on large lenses.

My only gripe and that is small is that to make it compact you need to unscrew one handle. I think that cold be fixed with a sleeve on that stem that can slide up and down so it can fold.

Comments about Gitzo G2271M Rationelle Head:

From the moment I opened the box I could tell the quality that went into manufacturing this head. It is lightweight sturdy and can very easily be adjusted to very small increments. Because of the Handles the head takes up quite a large amount of space so they need to be removed for travel, As such I do not recommend this as a Travel Photographers head, despite its relatively small size.
I Originally bought the head hoping I could use it for both Photography and HDSLR video however their just isn't enough friction on the Tilt to use this even casually as a video head. The weight of an SLR + Lens is just too much to achieve a smooth tilt without counterbalance or friction adjustment.
As a photography head (as it is advertised) It is Magnificent.
