This lens came with my Rebel XT kit and I originally thought I was going to have to replace it right off the bat. Instead, I've been using it a bunch for a wide range of both indoor and outdoor photography. The autofocus is fast and the lens produces reasonably crisp images. My only complaint is the focus ring, which is barely there. If this lens had a real focus ring, it would probably be much more popular. That aside, I enjoy this lens.

Of course this is only a kit lens provided with Canon's DSLR lineups, but it's still a lens non the less. It can take some decent photos if you know what you are doing in the settings department. It's no L, but it holds its own sometimes. Mine now sits on the desk as a paperweight pretty much.. Haven't used it in months. I won't get rid of it though being that it came with my 1st DSLR, plus, my wife may use it as she learns photography on my old XTi.

It's light, but cheaply built - Don't Drop It.
      It's sharp - Sometimes
      It's No Low Light Lens!
The mount is plastic.. could cause some issues down the road if handled roughly.

      I give it a 3 out of 5.....

Have heard so many good things about this lens, but ended up returning it to the shop 2 days after purchasing it. Photos were not sharp, even at f8 - f11, and gets noticeably worse at other apertures. Recommend trying it out in the shop at different settings and zooming into the pictures if you are considering buying this lens.

This lens came with my 20D. I have taken some great photosthat are very sharp with great color. Get a UV filter and aPolarizing filter and you got a nice lens, I would also buythe cheap 50mm f/1.8 lens as well. Great starter kit andstart saving for the better lens for the future.

Problems Encountered: None for the price, remember this is a starter Kit lens,so plan to invest in better equipment later.

I decided to wait for a while before writing a review forthis lens, so that I could get a feel for it. The optics forthis lens are excellent. All pictures are clear and vibrant, especially in lots of light. In low light situations, thelens begins to hunt, but this occurs rarely.

            Expertise: Amateur

Problems Encountered: After a week of owning this lens, I can now see dust whichhas entered the lens, and which is impossible (at least forme) to remove. Cleaning liquid has also entered the lens anddried on the sides. I will definitely be spending more moneyon my next lens.

Comments about Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S USM Lens:

I was one of the many people who got this little lens with my Canon Rebel XT. I remember looking at this little puppy and saying that it was a peashooter compared to those large white L Lens. However, it is when I first started using this little lens that I realized that this lens was quality. I took many great photos with this lens. I can honestly say that this lens is more reliable than my Tamron 28-200mm!The AF is great and although the focus ring takes a little getting used to, it is easy to get used to if using the manual focus. The zoom is great for people who need both a normal (50mm-55mm) and wide-angle (24mm and below) lens but cannot afford to get a better one. The F/stop is also great, especially since it is low (f/3.5). I'm never ever gonna trash this lens. This has been my go-to lens and it has been way too valuable to me.

Problems Encountered: Looks cheaply made, but that instantly fades away. It's got its quirks (such as getting out of focus on macro shots), but they are easy to deal with. Focus ring takes getting used to.i can get blurred backgrounds with this lens, but if you want a better background blur, save up for another lens (preferably a Canon lens) but make sure to keep this lens!

Many out there knock this lens, however after using this lens for 2 + years I have been VERY satisfied with the performance when used for travel/landscape (outdoor) photography. I have printed dozens of 24x36 prints The detail, color and contrast are quite good. It is light, small unassuming and makes a great travel companion when you wish to travel light.

            Great anytime lens

Comments about Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S USM Lens:

If you want a lens that you can take anywhere and anytime, while getting most of the photos you want, and not have toworry about losing or damaging it, this is the perfectinexpensive lens.It does a decent job of taking close-up pictures, although Ihave yet to get a really sharp macro shot.I took pictures at 3.5 at a party, in very poor light withthe on-camera flash on my 400d. To my surprise, many of thepictures turned out pretty well. Of course, not as sharp asa pro would want, but who wants to bring two(or more) grandworth of bulky photo stuff to a party. (Besides, the slightblur gives you the feeling of actually beingthere...drinking. That's my excuse and I'm standing by it!)In full sunlight, it's everything you could ask for.(As a side note, I wouldn't want to buy any expensive ef-smounts as I expect the aps-c size sensor to go extinct in afew years.)

Problems Encountered: Wide depth of field It's great for a point and shoot, butdifficult to get that nice bokeh.

            Decent entry lens

Comments about Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S USM Lens:

This lens is good for those who use their DSLR casually. Ithas an extremely cheap build quality; from a plastic mountto a near-impossible to use manual focus ring; especiallyfor those with larger fingers. It is, however, a slightlybetter version of the kit lens included with the DigitalRebel series and 20D/30D as it includes USM, allowing forquiet and fast autofocus. The one advantage of this lens isits very light weight and small size. This lens performs best at the longer focal end, unfortunately probably where you will least use it.If you are serious about photography and the quality of yourimages I recommend buying one of the following lenses over this: - Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens - Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens (better option)

Problems Encountered: Manual focus ring extremely small and hard to use and movesthe inside glass elements of the lens sometimes, causing theresulting image to actually (and very undesirably) rotate.Build quality is very cheap. Barrel distortion apparent at 18mm.Slow aperture results in hard-to-achieve bokeh (backgroundblur that makes pictures look prettier) as well asdifficulty when using this lens in low-light conditions.

I seriously did not expect the kit lens to have this level of quality. The autofocus is fast enough for most uses, though the manual focus ring feels a little cheap, but it does allow you to get a good grip. Great closeup shots.

            from Iowa

Comments about Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S USM Lens:

I love my 18-55mm lens. Yes, it is cheapy feeling, but the light weight and great pictures make up for it. I do wish the focus ring wasn't so close to the end of the lens. I was surprised as to how close I could get for close up shots of flowers and stuff. I can get within about 3 to 4 inches and still get great sharpness and DOF. A good lens to have in your camera bag.

Problems Encountered: My only nag about this lens is the focus ring is so close to the end of the lens. Other than that, I am very happy with it.

18 Months ago I bought my Canon Rebel XT which came withthis lens, all this time I been using it as primary lens,I use it for landscapes and portraiture, it has a very lowweight, wide enough for a decent landscape, Now I beenlooking some other wider lenses but still don't like becauseof the price, for the variety of things that you can do withthis lens it is a good idea to have it in your bag. Its costis nothing, You most have it.

Problems Encountered: During all this time I been taking landscapes and carrying itwith me all the time, now it has something in side that Ican't take away, but still use it.

I am selling my Rebel 6.3 with that lens to a good friend and I just realized that I am going to have to replace it, probably with the same lens. I just bought a Tokina 12-22mm wide zoom, but it is heavy, only goes down to F/4, so it will have its limitations. The 18-55 may be cheaply made and look cheap, but the optics seem to be fine and a lighter, more versatile lens is not easy to find, especially at that price.

Comments about Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S USM Lens:

Most trash this lens in reviews. Sure it has a cheap housing & cheap focus ring for manual focus. But the optics are excellent for a $100.00 range lens. With auto focus it performs very well. Its not a F2.8, but it's cheap & light weight. Popular Photography rated the optics a+ in most f stops up to 11x14s in it's review. Enough said for the $100 range. Canon would not include a lens with cheap optics with their kits.
