Comments about Westcott Spiderlite TD5 Fixture:

I was a bit of a skeptic when I made the buy, but using it has made em a believer...I own two of them.

Yes it works very well with AC-Strobes + fluorescent modelling light, fluorescents, and tungsten. Any E-26/27 bulb fite into the sockets. They operate with 110-240volts with the correct bulb and adapter. For tunsgten based operation it is recommended not to use more than 750 watts, but I have used up to 1300 with various bulb combos for short periods.

They're a little bit heavy compared to a focusing or photo flood light, but a medium duty stand can easily handle them. They're also portable thanks to the ability to seperate the titler bracket from the fixture.

The mounting holes for a soft/strip box are mega convenient, but are still a challenge to mount as with using a speedring (LOL!) I own third party soft/strip boxes and they fit perfectly. The tilter bracket has a equally convenient umbrella receptacle.

The TD-5s great for making soft or omni-directional light, but I longed for hard direction light. I solved this buy purchasing PAR-30 and PAR-38 medium flood and narrow spot globes. I'm able to alter the quality of the light but attaching diffusion filters using the 12 x 12 inch gel holders.

The main reason for purchasing was to create big soft light with fluorescents; but I rarely use this option. Fluorescents don't produce enough footcandles unless they are really close. I work on location a lot and this can be a limiting factor. Also the green in the sprectrum makes mixing with day, skylight, or strobe not as easy as it seems.

I am glad I made the buy!

Comments about Westcott Spiderlite TD5 Fixture:

This is a nice light that would be MUCH nicer if it was less expensive and if the sockets were placed just a bit further apart so that you could use larger bulbs. The center socket in particular is pointless since it can't accept the same size build as the other 4 sockets.

Drop the price to $200 bucks and I would give it 5 stars.

Comments about Westcott Spiderlite TD5 Fixture:

The fixture functions well and is typical Wescott. It looks very industrial without a great deal of concern for aesthetics. The switches for the individual lamps should be where they can be accessed if it is mounted on a boom or out of reach. To adjust power settings you have to physicall touch the back of the fixture. Cord mounted switches would be very helpful. It would be nice if the fixture had a socket for a light stand instead of a stud that requires a separate bracket for mounting.

Comments about Westcott Spiderlite TD5 Fixture:

The TD5 with the 50watt bulbs have a beautiful quality of light. I photograph infants, and prefer not to use strobes. These give a soft, window like quality that I love. My only wish is that they were a bit stronger. You need to keep the light very close to the subject.

Comments about Westcott Spiderlite TD5 Fixture:

Spider TD5 delivers a professional quality light.
And mainly excellent Westcott engineering of the swivel knob is capable of holding the soft box steady and constantly in any adjusted position, not like similar lights of the competition Impact or Interfit
I have no cons comment, but I have a suggestion for Westcott engineers to increase the total wattage from 220 Watts to at least 500 Watts.
Brand name Westcott means top quality produts!!
Keep it that way, you guys!!!
