I was looking for easy-to-use, compact and inexpensive flashmeter since I started to visit photo courses and do my own studio work.
After reading numerous reviews, forums and sites (including usefull reviews here, at BH), L-308S became the obvious choice !
First of all, it's great in terms of number of features vs. price. L-308S is very compact, light, good quality build and truly easy to use. I've started to correctly utilize it after first few minutes of reading the manual (This is my first flashmeter ever).
Then, for the studio photographer it provides everything you might need - various modes of metering light (ambient, flash, with and without cord etc), it meters light correctly (I have compared the results with other flashmeters). Another convenient feature is that you can adjust this flashmeter right to your camera (1, 1/2, 1/3 values), so you can get correct readings.
Size and weight are also pleasent since you can take it with you anywhere you go easily.
So, if you are looking for an excellent flashmeter at justified price, look no further - L-308S is the right choice !

I couldn't find any real cons about this product since it does everything you need from it and the price is just right.
For my everyday use it is completely enough and something more sophisticated (and pricy) I will buy probably after a few years only.

I didn't realize when ordering this that it can only be operated in a mode that gives an EV reading or in shutter priority mode, where you select the shutter speed you want and it gives the corresponding aperture. Once you take the reading, you can push the up/down buttons to change the shutter speed until you get the aperture value you want, and you can then read the appropriate shutter speed. But this is a painfully inefficient way of doing things.

This meter works fine and seems accurate enough. It is just too basic for my purposes. And it offers no spot metering. If all you need is a basic incident light meter, and you don't mind the lack of aperture priority mode, then I see nothing wrong with it.

I don't use strobes, so I didn't test the flash metering.

The ambient light mode without the lumisphere is a bit problematic as you don't know what field of view you are covering and it has no shade, so a bright light source like the sun, even if it is out of the field of view of your shot, would often strike the lens, cause substantial flare, and throw off the reading.

I decided to just use my Sigma DP2s as my light meter for my large format work as I can do spot metering and can see exactly what I am metering, and I can use exposure compensation (you can change the ISO to accomplish that on the l308s). I have much more control. The biggest drawback there is that I cannot select very small apertures like f/64. So some math is needed when I need small apertures.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

For the money I expected the meter to be better built. It acts and feels cheap. The lumisphere slides out of position too easily. Price was too high for this model.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

I use a Canon Speedlite 580EX II and a 580EX on a light stand with 43"Westcott Umbrellas for portraits in offices etc. I use a Canon 6D in manual mode, also set the Speedlites in manual mode. I set the flash output on the speedlites, set the shutter speed & ISO on the Sekonic L-308S, take a test shot and it tells me the Aperture. It takes out the guesswork, very simple to use. Works great when not using a flash also.

A great basic meter. Perfect for a beginner or intermediate photographer like myself. Easy to operate and accurate. We tested it side-by-side with a professional photographer's $+ Sekonic L-758DR DigitalMaster light meter outdoors from full sun to deep shade and it was dead-on accurate with the L-758DR!

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

For years I thought I did not need a meter for portraits. I would just use the meter on my Nikon D300s, D90 Or D40x and take several shots until I got the right exposure. But a friend finally convinced me to buy one. I should have bought this years ago. My life is much better now. Saves time from doing the math, of the Triangle. ISO, Shutter and Aperture.

I picked this up to use in a portrait studio that I'm setting up in my home. The L-308S Flashmate was a breeze to learn how to use. The setup was easy and the instructions were very clear as to how to use it. Now I just have to learn what to do with the readings I'm getting.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

I really like the ease and simplicity of this light meter. However, I brought this quite a few months ago when I had no idea what I was looking for and what my needs were. Would I buy one now,I would look into a meter that I can set the shutter speed to 1/80th of a second (I use that shutter speed most of the time)as oppossed to this light meter that jumps from 1/60th of a sec to 1/125.

Besides for the shutter speed issue as mentioned above, I love using this meter! It takes the guessing out of photography and lets you get perfectly exposed shots.

This product works as specified. Didn't like the fact it's only shutter priority mode but I knew that going in and it is not to much of a problem to adjust to aperture by using the side buttons. For the price it helps to get the proper exposure in camera on the first shot. It also works well with flash.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

I've owned this meter for several months now and use it mainly to take environmental portraits of my grandchildren, macro, product photography, indoor photography, and when using flash.

Until receiving the meter I've always relied on the cameras meter. However on many occasions the cameras meter was incorrect especially in back-lit situations or when using flash. In order to get a correct exposure I had to rely on chimping and bracketing. No more ..........

For the type of photography I do this meter is perfect.

I can use a bare manual flash off camera for fill and get a properly exposed portrait. Except for the catch lights in the eyes the flash isn't detectable.

Inside I use it to meter bounced flash and I get exceptional results within one or 2 shots. I also use it to measure the ambient light indoors. I use it to meter in shade especially when my subject is back lit.

This meter isn't good for landscape photography, it doesn't spot meter, it doesn't display % of flash vs ambient, it is shutter priority. It is a basic meter. These limits can be overcome if you know how to use the meter and don't mind doing the math.

Many will say a light meter isn't needed that the camera is good enough, well good enough isn't what I'm looking for.

I'd rather be shooting than having to spend more time on a development program adjusting exposure and WB (I also use custom White Balance).

As far as construction goes, I've dropped mine twice from about 3 foot and there was no damage to the case or the electronics.

I'd been using the same old meter for many years. It worked but I had to almost take out a loan with the 6 watch batteries had to be replaced and it was almost as big as a camera. It was time for a change.

I'm very pleased with this little Sekonic meter. It is very small (palm sized), light, accurate, easy to switch between reflected and direct light readings. (I tend to check both.) I seems to be very accurate. I find the read-out clear and easy to see in almost all conditions. Displaying either f-number or EV is easy. Did I mention it's small and light? ;)

The only issue I have with it is the toggling between ambient, triggered flash and wait-for-flash is a bit TOO easy and I find myself in the wrong mode fairly often.

Great little meter for the money. I recommend it.

I needed a light meter for certain occasions-but did not want to spend a lot. This does the job for what I needed as a photo Mom ( meaning non professional).

One of the best tools in my arsenal. I've already improved my negatives ten-fold and in my opinion it paid for itself the first Hassalblad film I developed.
Works seamlessly with my off camera speed light (corded and not corded). I carry it with me like it's my phone.

I've read some users would like to see an aperature priority mode, but I think that would be a bit redundant as the shutter speed can be changed to find your specific f-stop you want for the shot. It's going to be the same no matter what.

Great equipment that won't let you down.

Purchased a more expensive Seconic meter but it was a little more technically advanced than I needed. Returned it and got this L-308S. This little gem meets all of my needs and performs as well as it's more expensive brother! I am highly recommending it to all how want, need a light meter. That being said don't hesitate and order it now.

When I am out with my Leica, I need something that I can be stowed away in my pocket. Can be retrieved and used quickly, easily and discretely.

I've experienced no better digital light meter for my needs. Sure, there are fancier more complicated meters on the market (for more money, too!). This light meter suits my needs without getting in the way.

If you want something small and easy to use, look no further.
