I was looking for easy-to-use, compact and inexpensive flashmeter since I started to visit photo courses and do my own studio work.
After reading numerous reviews, forums and sites (including usefull reviews here, at BH), L-308S became the obvious choice !
First of all, it's great in terms of number of features vs. price. L-308S is very compact, light, good quality build and truly easy to use. I've started to correctly utilize it after first few minutes of reading the manual (This is my first flashmeter ever).
Then, for the studio photographer it provides everything you might need - various modes of metering light (ambient, flash, with and without cord etc), it meters light correctly (I have compared the results with other flashmeters). Another convenient feature is that you can adjust this flashmeter right to your camera (1, 1/2, 1/3 values), so you can get correct readings.
Size and weight are also pleasent since you can take it with you anywhere you go easily.
So, if you are looking for an excellent flashmeter at justified price, look no further - L-308S is the right choice !

I couldn't find any real cons about this product since it does everything you need from it and the price is just right.
For my everyday use it is completely enough and something more sophisticated (and pricy) I will buy probably after a few years only.

I didn't realize when ordering this that it can only be operated in a mode that gives an EV reading or in shutter priority mode, where you select the shutter speed you want and it gives the corresponding aperture. Once you take the reading, you can push the up/down buttons to change the shutter speed until you get the aperture value you want, and you can then read the appropriate shutter speed. But this is a painfully inefficient way of doing things.

This meter works fine and seems accurate enough. It is just too basic for my purposes. And it offers no spot metering. If all you need is a basic incident light meter, and you don't mind the lack of aperture priority mode, then I see nothing wrong with it.

I don't use strobes, so I didn't test the flash metering.

The ambient light mode without the lumisphere is a bit problematic as you don't know what field of view you are covering and it has no shade, so a bright light source like the sun, even if it is out of the field of view of your shot, would often strike the lens, cause substantial flare, and throw off the reading.

I decided to just use my Sigma DP2s as my light meter for my large format work as I can do spot metering and can see exactly what I am metering, and I can use exposure compensation (you can change the ISO to accomplish that on the l308s). I have much more control. The biggest drawback there is that I cannot select very small apertures like f/64. So some math is needed when I need small apertures.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

This is probably the least expensive flash-capable light meter that could be described as "full-featured". It works well as a flash meter, and is compact, lightweight, and pretty accurate. Generally, the flash exposure readings I get from this meter are within 1/3 stop of the exposure I end up using, -and that small difference may be more due to camera variations and personal preference than any real inaccuracy on the part of the meter.

It also works well as an incident ambient light meter, but is probably not the best thing for taking reflected light readings. You do that by sliding back the incident dome and pointing the naked sensor lens at the subject in a general sort of way. So not the best thing for reflected readings of a particular area.

The controls can be a bit confusing at first because the up/down buttons on the right side have multiple functions, depending on what mode the meter is in. For instance, if you're in "ISO" mode pushing them changes the ISO speed setting, but outside of that mode it changes the shutter speed that's set on the meter. Once you learn that then the meter is easy to use.

My only real complaint about the meter is that it reads out exposure in f/stops plus decimal tenths of a stop. So you get readings like "f/5.6 point 3" or "f/11 point 5". But most DSLR cameras allow you to set the aperture directly in actual 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments, so you have to "do the math" to convert, say, "f/5.6 point 3" to f/6.3, and so on. It would be much more convenient if the meter read out in actual 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments (user selectable) just like the cameras do. Then you wouldn't have to make those mental calculations.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

Solid incident meter and surprisingly good reflective. I aim at the subject then point slightly down when using reflective and it usually agrees with my Sony a6000 meter. Also for sunsets I can point slightly up to sky for one measurement and then down into the shadows for a second then meet half way for a general guideline. Can't do any better than this without spending big bucks on a spot meter.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

Admittedly, I don't use it all the time. But I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. It has taken a lot of guesswork out of some difficult studio scenarios.

If there's one flaw, it's that the L-308S' bigger brothers are so much more expensive. Another is that you can't set the aperture in the meter (you need to upgrade to the next device in the lineup for that), though, I knew that beforehand. You can only set the shutter speed. Small inconvenience that's less and less important each time I use it.

I was looking for a fairly inexpensive light/flash meter. This serves my purpose for as often as I use it. It was not a necessity for me to have but has certainly proved to be useful in tough lighting situations.

I purchased this light meter after chatting with an agent who helped me narrow down which one I should get based upon features each one had. I received this light meter, and literally, put the battery it, and made 1 set up change to change it 1/3 stop intervals, and BAM, it is ready to use. So easy! I used it the next day I received it and immediately loved it!

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

I've been using it for two weeks in portrait studio. It seems produces reliable results. My only complain is that I cannot lock neither Mode or shutter speed buttons. Locking would help to prevent accidental changes as button are all exposed and so easy to press.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:

I use this product mostly for when I'm shooting film on my Rollei. The light-meter allows for a multitude of other uses, and I have often kept it around my neck when working in digital video and photo formats to get a quick and accurate reading. When working with LCD screens it is often hard to get an accurate reading - especially for 1080p video when you don't have the latitude of RAW files, it really does matter that you get the exposure right. This is a good tool, and I can't believe I spent so much of my early photographic career without one.

I have used this meter for a few days now and it works great so far the exposure readings seem to be spot on.
