I bought this lens in advance of a vacation in Hawaii. I wanted an all-in-one lens rather than carrying 2 separate lens during this vacation. My other 2 lenses were the original Sony 18-70mm and a Sigma 70-200mm.

The first lens arrived and had a small blemish in the center of the front optics, so I returned it for a replacement. The second lens arrived in good condition.

My point of comparison was my wife's Panasonic FX35 super-zoom camera. She could take wide angle or close-up photographs without changing her lens. I wanted something similar with my DSLR. I shot about 1500 frames in various situations ranging from bright sunlight to moonlight to sunrise to sunset and even pitch darkness, and this lens proved itself very well.

I'm not a professional photographer, but I know enough to use many of the manual adjustments such as shutter priority, aperture priority, white balance, etc, but the majority of my photographs were with the fully automatic mode.

This lens did it all for me on this vacation. From wide landscape photographs from a helicopter to closeups of flowing lava and breaching whales.

In one over-exposed, night-time photograph of molten lava (with tripod), the lens' internal reflections produced an artistic round circle the size of the frame and centered. This was dumb luck and looked eerily beautiful. I shortened the exposure, and the circle disappeared.

Other reviews have mentioned a few negatives on which I'll comment now.
Slow to focus - agreed, it's a little slower than my original Sony 18-70mm, but generally not perceptible.
Zoom creep - agreed, but this happened only when the camera was hanging from my neck, and the zoom was left extended more than 50%. I fully retracted the zoom and did not have to use the lock to hold it in place even when hiking over rugged terrain like lava fields.

Its only deficient feature is its slow f-rating. It becomes even more noticeable with a polarizing filter. This of course affects the camera's ability to auto-focus in very low light conditions. Again, this is not a significant deficiency, just something I noticed. Removing the polarizer helped significantly. Of course, a faster f-rating would probably increase the lens' weight.

This lens is heavier than and about the same size as my 18-70mm but lighter and shorter than my 70-200mm. It was not too tiring to have this hanging from my neck all day. The benefits of this lens far out-weigh its nominal extra weight.

Overall, I'm very pleased, and this is now my standard everyday lens on this camera.

good, Practical lens

I got this lens as an addition to the kit sony 18-70, for my new Sony Alpha 300.
I have been using the lens for about 2 weeks now.

It is a practical, well builded, all in one lens.
construction is pretty sturdy, and gives a much less filmsy feeling compared to the kit lens. I chosed this one after several searches on the web, and comparision with the similar lens (Tamron and Sony). Choosed this one as it seemed to get better reviews.
It is heavier than the very light stock, plastic kit lens. Easy to use. After few days the zoom tends to extend by itself when hanging downward. Need to lock it with the lock button all the time.
Focusing is ok: the camera always got it, but is is noiser and some slower than the kit lens. Manual focusing cannot be done unless swithing the camera on Manual focus.
But all above are common issues for this kind of non-pro lenses.
max Aperture at 6,3 if not so good, but same as competitors. The bokeh is quite poor therefore.
The price is quite fair, but more expensive than the the Tamron, but also less than the Sony.
Overall, it is a practical lens, if you plan to travel around with nothing but the camera in a little bag.
But as you can stand a bigger shoulder bag, or a little backpack, I'd rather go around with a good 70-200, faster zoom + the 18-70 kit, and maybe a 50/100mm, faster prime lens (f 2.8 or less)

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3D DC Aspherical (IF) Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR:

I took this lens to the zoo, hoping to get some good shots. The lens was able to focus most of the time on AF, but did have some issues. Bokeh at the 200mm end was very poor, in my opinion (not smooth at all).

My biggest issue was even on a bright sunny day, with a wide aperture, a lot of my shots came out with blur on people, as though the shutter was open too long... even though they were taken at 1/1000 speed. It wasn't a focusing issue, as rigid elements were in perfect focus.

I did end up getting some decent shots, and I will say that having the 18-200 range was great. I didn't notice any difference in quality throughout the range. But between bad bokeh and weird motion blur issues, I ended up deciding not to keep the lens.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3D DC Aspherical (IF) Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR:

As described, it's a superb walk-around or "vacation" lens. With a focal length from 18mm to 200mm (27-300mm APS-C), there is little you'd miss on a daily basis. It's light weight and comparatively short so you won't be worn out at the end of the day. It's become my stand-by lens when I know I'll need the extra zoom length, but use my Zeiss 16-80mm lens about 85% of the time.

When the camera is set for multiple focus points in low light situations, the lens searches longer than I'd like before locking in. If the camera is set on "spot focus" the lens locks in immediately. I consider this normal for a f/3.5 lens. I'm shooting with a Sony A-580.

I'm really not concerned with auditory noise and find this lens to be about the same as my other lenses, perhaps a bit quieter? - again, I really don't notice it either way.

In terms of image quality I'd give it a 7 on a 10 point scale. It's not a prime lens, nor is it expensive. It delivers good color reproduction as would be expected, but "tack sharp" would not be a term I'd use particularly if enlarging your prints beyond 8x10. Obviously the camera/sensor and ISO you use has an impact on the results.

This lens has a lens-lock to prevent lens creep when hanging on your neck. I've not found it to be necessary after several months of use, but I have other lenses that suffer from this problem so it's nice to know this Sigma will never have that problem.

Overall: I love the lens and the price can't be beat.

I'm no pro photographer but I take a lot of family and travel shots. I was nicely surprised to see how solidly built this lens was compared to my kit lens. I really wanted a good all around lens that I can take on trips as well as to my nephews baseball games and so far this lens has done it all. I love the range of this lens as it allows me to take one lens for wide as well as zoom shots. The focus is a little slow and it is a bit noisy but no worse on both counts than my kit lens. If you want a good all in one lens this is the way to go.

I got this lens for my Sony Nex-5 for use via the La_ea1 adapter. I love the focal range that sigma has packed in a small frame. However the auto focus does not work with my adapter. This is because the AF works only with alpha cameras that have the screw motor on the cameras mount. The lens does experience a bit of breathing when adjusting the focus. Distortion at its wide angle length is to be expected at this price range. I can see a tiny bit of chromatic aberration in high contrast situations but again, for this price range its to be expected. All in all although I have to use it as a manual focus lens I am happy with the product and use it often.

As an amateur photographer,I bought this lens to upgrade from the 18-50mm that came in my camera kit. The focus is sharp, and pics are clear. The one drawback I have found is that it is a bit noisy when autofocusing. In my opinion, it's a great lens for a beginner's buck.

I have had the lens for about 2 weeks, mostly I use it for my children and I am very happy with the photos. I took it on vacation and I love that I don't have to worry about changing lenses. I have a 18-50mm lens and a 70-200mm lens and it is bulky and heave to bring on a day's excursion. If you a looking for a good all around lens, look very closely at this one.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3D DC Aspherical (IF) Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR:

The Sigma 18-200 lens is the best at its level(18-200's). I bought it because it got the best reviews compared to the Sony, Tamron, and other generic lenses. Most pros are skeptical about the "all in one" lenses, which is understandable. The common belief is that the more general an item's uses are, the less quality that will be gotten for each purpose (why pros use fixed focal lengths much of the time). However, for casual photographers and photo enthusiasts like myself, this kind of lens is a must have. It is also something every pro should have. I will never need to buy another one. It is rugged and durable, which is great for moving around a lot like I do. It is medium weight and speed, but I personally like heavier lenses. I have used this lens several times since purchasing it, and just got back from touring New York City to test it out. Being able to take wide-view shots of the city skyline from the top of the Empire State Building, and yet seconds later being able to zoom in on a taxi and street sign 4 blocks and 86 stories away was an awesome experience. This lens has taken over as my main lens, and I will be taking it to Italy in a few days. My area of focus in photography is lanscapes and architecture, although I have recently started to get into motion shots and event photography. This lens is great for all of those. If you are looking for something convenient, yet still high quality and with consistent output, get this lens. And get this one over the manufacturer's version, and especially the Tamron one. It was on sale for[$] when I bought it, and it has already proven to be well worth it.

This lens is well constructed (metal mount) and covers a very useful range. For the price, it's a solid upgrade to the kit lens. I bought it so that I could carry fewer lenses on a trip to Vancouver and Seattle and I ended up using it pretty much exclusively. It worked well in a variety of conditions but mostly sun and fairly bright overcast. I wouldn't buy it expecting to take low light photos with no flash or to get crazy bokeh - it's not made for that (although you still do get fairly decent bokeh out of it).

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3D DC Aspherical (IF) Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Digital SLR:

This lens is mounted on my A560 90% of the time and I'm very pleased with it. Fast accurate focus and it does come with a nice pedal style lens hood. I wish it was a little faster but for the cost I'm not complaining. Made is Japan quality [...]

Bought for my sony 300. Very wide view. Smooth operation. Focus is slow. I would rather make sure picture is in focus before it takes the picture so it wont bother me that much. Over all I like the lens

this is a very good all-rounder. i chose this because of 1) its range and 2) the price. you really get bang for your buck here and especially for someone (me) who's just starting out with a new DSLR i think this is a very good lens to go with. i'm sure i'd grow out of it one day, but this is certainly a handy and cost-effective lens to use when you get to know your camera

I find the creative flexibility provided by the 18 - 200mm range of this lens a real improvement over my previous 28-200 lens. I do a lot of outdoor photography and love having just one lens to carry. The zoom mechanism is smooth to operate and the lens if lighter than my previous lens. The images are sharp and produced good quality prints.
