Bought Used - Looks and Feels New

By Joseph

from Washington, DC

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

I bought this used for $130 less than retail price. Let me say how massive this thing is. It is 9 inches by 9 inches and it is a solid metal piece that feels lighter than you think it should be. I bought this used and it looks and feels brand new. The base is easy to screw on to a tripod head and the dials move with ease. it was a cinch to clip my 70-200 VRII lens to the plate and it looks small compared to this gimbal head. I have the intention of later buying bigger faster teleconverters but could not pass up on this deal for the gimbal head.

Works Well-Easy to set-up and Easy to Use

By North Jersey

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

The control knobs are well positioned and work easily. The design is fairly robust making this well suited for use with a super telephoto lens like the Sigma 150-600mm Sport. We have not had too many opportunities to use this so far, but in the times we have tried it, we are pleased with the product.

Smooth stable tripod head

By Gordon

from Rocklin CA

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Just received my WH200 and took it a local air show. Tracking of 400mph P51s was very smooth and stable with a heavy telephoto. Head works well on birds and wild life. I highly recommend this head.

Outstanding support for large telephoto rigs

By Matthew Schwartz

Pros

  • "Smooth as butter" motion in all directions
  • Perfect solution for large lenses
  • Renders camera and lens "weightless"
  • Superb materials and construction

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Large

Best Uses

  • Wildlife

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

Before my Wimberley, I owned a cheapo gimbal that cost 1/3rd the price. There's no comparison between the two. The cheapo one has slop all over and doesn't pan smoothly. The Wimberley is consistently smooth and solid. "You get what you pay for" is true here.

This gimbal is a superb product. Nice materials, precision construction. Every motion is smooth - you forget you're using it. The rubber knobs are easy to use, even wearing thick gloves in cold weather.

The Wimberley is perfect for my 500 f/4 lens, but the trade-off for this amazing support is that it's large and heavy.

I use this mostly for wildlife, where it has good freedom of movement. But for serious action, such as fast flying birds, I prefer to handhold my camera. It also locks super tight so it's great for static shots such as moon photography or telephoto landscapes.

If the tripod isn't level, the camera will be tilted, and it will rotate as you pan the gimbal. Therefore I loosen the lens collar lock so I can manually level the camera as I am panning and composing.

Be aware that different lens, camera, and accessory combinations will require re-balancing!

I would recommend an RRS lever-release cradle clamp to replace the wimberley screw knob clamp. Five seconds less time per mount or dismount is HUGE when wildlife action is happening!

Be careful in windy conditions. If the gimbal knobs are loose and you're not paying attention, your gear can spin around.

Also be sure to lock both knobs before picking up the entire support rig with camera attached.

Buy the highest quality, beefiest tripod you can afford. (I use the Gitzo Systematic 4542LS). Don't skimp on support and end up with toppled and broken gear or unstable shooting conditions.

Overall I would highly recommend the Wimberley if you need a gimbal head. I have never regretted buying it, and would obtain another in a heartbeat if something bad happened to my current one.

Purchased the Wimberly gimbal head to shoot an air show with my D-300 and the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens. Once balanced the head was extremely smooth and allowed flawless tracking. One thing to note, with a zoom lens the point of balance will change with focal length. I balanced the lens for the middle of the range I was most likely to shoot and it worked well.

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

I use the WH-200 head on a RRS TVC-34L tripod. The set-up is perfect. I use the support for a Canon 500mm f4 IS II. Despite the weight savings Canon has achieved with the lens, hand holding and even using a monopod gets tiresome and challenging over the course of a day. The Wimberley eliminates the weight and makes using the lens less of a challenge.

There are others that make a gimbal head. Those others may be a few dollars cheaper. When you've progressed in photography to the point that you were willing to purchase high-end lenses such as 500,600, and 800 mm telephotos, you've already been forced to realize that you get what you pay for. With that said, why would you spend the money on an expensive lens and then support it with a copy-cat gimbal? Is the $100 savings you might find worth the $9,000+ lens? NO. Support your best lens with the best.

The head is made with precision. That precision translates into silky smooth operation. The folks at Wimberley dial in a certain amount of pre-tension. The amount they have set is perfect. Once you balance your lens/camera combo, there is no flop, sag, or looseness. There's also no grit or grinding in any of the movement. Everything is smooth. When it comes time to lock things down, the heads provides rock solid support.

One thing users should consider when using a gimbal head is the use of a tripod with a leveling base/bowl. I used to work on a land survey crew so I am used to leveling a tripod quickly. Others without experience leveling a tripod by the legs only may wish to use a leveling bowl to assist in quicker set-ups.

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:

This is an essential piece of gear for bird, wildlife and sports photography. I have owned one for years and decided to buy a second so that I could shoot with two cameras side by side with different lenses. The movements are as smooth as honey. Wimberley has excellent build quality. By positioning the center of gravity of the lens-camera combination at the pivot points of the head, you essentially make your lens and camera behave as if they were weightless. It's magic. The result: you can track fast-moving subjects effortlessly and quickly. When shooting with groups of photographers, invariably, you will see some poor guy who tried to save money with a cheaper brand; invariably, the next time you see him, he will have a Wimberley. These heads are guaranteed to cause equipment envy.

Bought the Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal and the Kirk LP-55 quick release arca plate. I am very happy with my purchase! Took my tripod (carbon fiber) set up with the gimbal to Point Reyes and got some outstanding photos. Used my Canon 7DM2 with a 500mm lens. Couldn't have taken some of the shots I took without this set up. I highly recommend the Wimberley!

This head provides fantastic smooth movement of the lens over a 360 degree range. Easy set up and fast clamping of the lens to the tripod makes this a great buy. My other heads all had the stiff jerky movement as compared to this so this is a big change for me for the better.
