I use this product for macro photography of small objects. I have particularly enjoyed using it to photograph small insects as they pollinate wildflowers. The flash is very versatile; the flash units can be mounted on the ring or used off ring. I typically like to keep one on the ring and hold the second one by hand. I have used this flash to illuminate the interior of flowers. You can hand hold one flash for back or sidelighting or from any angle you choose. I have been able to achieve excellent close-ups of insects that surpass what I have been able to do in the past. The wireless aspect is nice. No wires to fool with. Keep extra batteries on hand; if you do a lot of shooting, especially rapid fire, you will need them. Cons: The flash unit on the front of the camera can be bulky; be careful when adjusting your tripod or moving from one location to another. It is not that hard to install or operate. One last thing, if you are going to use it with the Nikon 60 mm Macro, make sure you order the adapater ring that mates this flash to that particular camera. This ring can be ordered in the accessory section for the R1C1. If you are using the 105 mm Nikon macro, you will need an adapter ring for that lens in order to use the autofocus selection on that lens. For macro, I recommend manual focus only. Autofocus works with my 60 mm OK -and sometimes you need it for fast moving insects - but manual is probably best when doing most macros. The 60mm adapter ring is Nikon designated SY - 1- 72; and for the 105 mm it is SY - 1-62.

I have been a professional photographer for 30 plus years.the R1C1 was just what I was needing for on location macro photography.I did my home work prior to ordering. Thanks to B&H and the accessories menu i noted the SC-30 shoe cord,a $100.00 accessorie, and because I still own a F-5 camera body I ordered the cord also.I shoot with a Fuji S-3,and found out that the system would not work without the the SC-30 cord, and that makes the system NOT WIRELESS.You must have a camera body that has iTTL CLS.

Problems Encountered: The instruction manual is not user frindley. The troubleshooting reference information is not accurate the system does not come with batteries [3] three CR123a batteries are needed for the system to operated if your camera is not iTTL with CLS you must use TTL cord SC-30.

Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Studio lighting for macro photography

Items I Recommend: Nikon SC-30TTL cord

Keep looking

Comments about Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System:

The flashes themselves seem fine. Have not yet worked with them much, HOWEVEER, the ring attachment to the lens seems flimsy and the attachment of the speedlight units themselves is proprietary and not adaptable to hot or cold shoes. So this extremely limits how these are used. This is my biggest gripe and may lead to me returning them, if I cannot find a way to use them off of the ring . I have a friend who figured out a way to do it, but Nikon makes it very difficult. For the large amount of money these cost, it is a big disappointment. Love Nikon lenses and cameras, for reference.

Comments about Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System:

Was just out shooting the R1C1 today. The ability to control ratios across two zones is excellent. I have three flash units, do two on one zone, one on the other, and with diffusers, I can get extremely natural looking light with some dimensionality from having a 2:1 or 1.5:1 ratio between zones. (Think key and fill lighting.)

I like this better than ring lighting because it's easy to make it look natural, where ring lighting has a unique, and not always welcome, look. The total output is low, as it is for most macro-oriented flash. I also shoot macro from time to time with an SB900 in my left hand, camera in my right, controlled by the wireless controller, and while the light is brighter, it's also a bit of a workout holding that light way out there. But - if you get this kit, you have many more options than just the R1C1 kit itself.

Before you assume this isn't strong enough - I routinely shoot with this setup in broad daylight and can get excellent isolation, almost like I had dark backdrops in studio. Check out the examples.

I find the light without the diffusers to be too harsh, although it is a lot brighter. I'd suggest buying one spare diffuser, and one spare light cover, as it's possible to break or lose one or the other.

Only negative is that the system tops out at 77mm filter size. I've got the Sigma 180mm macro, and this isn't an option, filter ring size is too large. That's a crying shame.

Comments about Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System:

It really is complete! Flowers are fun with the close-up lighting possibilities. Yet these little lights can become their own remote light sources off camera to highlight faces in a group portrait, or backlight product photography. Has an all-in-one case for storage, but each piece has its own protective pouch to carry along in the field pack.

Comments about Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System:

Just as advertised, you pay for a full lighting kit set up primarily for close-up macro work... I've run the kit through it's initial paces with a 105mm and 200mm Nikkor macro... My initial impression is that the 105mm is probably the better lens as the working distance is far less than the 200mm offers... I took the 200mm into a greenhouse and always felt a little bit too far away...

All items in the kit were accounted for and in great condition; however, I was utterly appalled to find now manual included with the kit! I found a manual to download off the Nikon site, but a print out on 8x10 paper is far less satisfying than one of Nikon's small manuals... for what I paid (which was a pretty good price here at B&H) I think a manual should have been included...

Nikon has a nice digitutor film for training which is very useful to consider...

I use this speedlight system on my D750 and D7200 for close up photography of flowers and insects among other things. It also works great on my D5200, of which the built in flash does not work as a commander. Though I really didn't need the SU-800, I am happy I went with this kit because the built in flash commanders on my D750 and D7200 only commands 2 groups where the SU-800 can command 3 groups.

The need to remove filters is a minor nuisance. It comes with an amazingly complete suitcase full of stuff that pros might use over a lifetime, very well thought-out.

Comments about Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System:

The kit was a lot bigger, and contained a lot more stuff than I thought. Not sure why I wasn't expecting the big carrying case, as it is listed clearly in the specifications. The kit comes with a lot of adapters to connect to your camera lenses. It will definitely give me a lot of practice with lighting...diffusers, colored gels included.

I think one of my favorite things is actually the book that has some example photos along with how the photo was lit inside. If you're not sure how to start, the book is a good way to get some inspiration.

I've only had a chance to use the flashes once, and I notice that the flashes can rotate a little as you move the camera. As long as you have your camera on a tripod and set up, that shouldn't cause an issue there. I do try to hand-hold with a macro lens from time to time to practice my camera holding technique at close range; that would be the only (very minor) drawback.

Comments about Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System:

Bought this system for macro photography. Easy to use and works very well in bringing a balance light to the subject. Nice case to hold all the equipment when not in use.
