Comments about Edirol / Roland R-09 - Portable 24-Bit WAV/MP3 Audio Recorder (Black):

I use this product for Wedding/Event recording as a supplement and backup to my direct to camera/wireless recording. It is great for live performances and captures good quality audio. I archive the files as mp3s and use them as needed. It is very simple to use and has a good capacity. It is also lightweight and is small enough to fit discreetly just about anywhere. I may purchase a lav or external mic in the future, but I am very pleased with the internal built-in mics. Construction is all plastic and seems a bit lightweight so I'd recommend purchasing the case to go with it, as well as a variety of mounting accessories.

Comments about Edirol / Roland R-09 - Portable 24-Bit WAV/MP3 Audio Recorder (Black):

I am a member of a 30-voice community chorus that sometimes performs with orchestra. I've had R-09 for about two years and use it with external mic/mics to record rehearsals and performances. After a rehearsal, I can quickly transfer the SD card to my computer, edit out the dead spots and unuseful comments, and burn a CD for our director. Being able review the actual rehearsal at his own time ana pace allows him to critique us to improve our singing -- very valuable! The quality is superb. Can't wait for the new model.

No complaints! Has performed perfectly. SD card is a joy to use. I got a short conversion cable to attach my XLR mics to the stereo-mini jack -- I love it. I use it for recording voice tracks for professional radio productions and for recording wild sound in my neighborhood.

The R09 is one of my most favorite and most used pieces of equipment. I've had mine for almost 2 years. The battery compartment is fragile, but I'm not rough on anything that costs more than $50. I love the 24bit Wav. But the mp3 is nice too when you need a longer recording. Oddly enough, I use it to capture audio from my VX2100 cam while capturing video to my Mac-Mini. I have to do this because the Mac-Mini distorts the audio upon capture. I would have been screwed so many times if I hadn't had this neat little device.

I totally agree with all the above points. Anyway, this little thing sounds awesome for live recording. With a decent set of mini microphones you'll be stunned by the sound quality.

                  Unsound investment

Comments about Edirol / Roland R-09 - Portable 24-Bit WAV/MP3 Audio Recorder (Black):

What, exactly, was Edirol/Roland thinking when it designed this professional level digital audio recorder? Obviously not ease of use or rugged construction - the latter shockingly poor for a $400 device of this nature. For starters, the battery and SD card compartments share a flimsy access panel which has to be opened one way for batteries and another for the card. Access is confusing at first and even when done properly, there's a danger of the slding panel snapping off when attempting to force it back into place. The quality of the plastics in the body is subpar - even low cost MP3 makers like Coby use stronger materials than what Edirol/Roland employed in the R-09. Last week, I accidentally dropped our dept.'s R-09 onto a carpeted floor - to my annoyance, the power button flew off from under its rubber side panel (?) and vanished, thus rendering the unit inoperable. Also, the tiny screen is bright enough, but in this age of ever larger LCDs on ever smaller devices, the R-09's B&W LED feels hopelessly out of date. I recently bought a couple of $70 Transcend T.sonic 2GB MP3 players/ voice recorders that have larger, full color LCD screens; why haven't higher-end makers like Edirol/Roland followed suit, especially if they intend to continue charging pro-level prices for their products? So, despite having decent recording quality and features, the Edirol/Roland R-09 ulitmately disappoints due to the inexcusable cheapness of its build and materials. Edirol/Roland need to go back to the drawing board and design a rugged, modern SD based digital audio recorder that justifies its hefty price tag.

                  Expertise: Professional audio-visual editor/photographer

Problems Encountered: Tacky, low-quality feel for a $400 recorder. Rubber side panels easily come off. Poor fit & finish. Screen way too small.

                  Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Transcend T.sonic 610 & 820 MP3/DVRs, Olympus WS-110 DVR

Items I Recommend: Another brand entirely.
