I bought this for use with an AlienBees strobe and a shoe flash. The cloth collar is too small to comfortably go around the housing of the AB. With a shoe flash, it's awkward to set up, though it does work. Using an umbrella bracket didn't solve the problem of placing the shoe flash (Canon 580EX II) in the correct position. Instead, I use a metal bracket and studs to place the shoe flash horizontally, so to keep the control panel and the remote sensor visible and accessible.

The removable light diffuser works well, but I'm not sure how long it will last; it feels as it can break easily.

I give it 3 stars because of the quality and overpriced tag.

Easy to use really nice light. Be carful not to close it with the scrim on because you will break the umbrella. I wish I could just buy a replacement umbrella without all the accessaries.

Comments about Photek Umbrella - Softlighter II - 36":

The larger softlighter is very popular among photographers on location, and in studios. I purchased this 3 ft. softlighter for work on-the-go, on the street, and it's size is perfect for street portraiture. Constructed out of the same materials as the larger softlighter, I imagine if I take care of it, it will hold up. Setup was fast on my ProFoto AcuteB2 heads. A perfect pair for portraits on the go!

Light, easy to pack, cost effective way to soften light from a speedlite on location. I would not say that it looks particularly durable simply because it is, after all, an umbrella which is inherently fragile.

Comments about Photek Umbrella - Softlighter II - 36":

I've been using and fun of photek softlighter umbrella series for a while now. Owned 6' first, 2 of them, got Medium size then decied to have 36" also. I'm location shooter and some spaces are small that even i prefer setting up 6' but it's sometimes too big. Having 36" option is absolutely great. Easy to set up.. Love the lighting quality.. only 1 problem of any photek softlighter umbrella is that it's a bit fragile on their bones.. we gotta be gentle with them. Otherwise, I love having them all.

The 36" version is small enough to keep open in my small studio all the time. The perfect portable softbox for speedlights. I have the larger version too. This is all I need for studio photography on a small scale. Good quality, very versatile, do-it-all product.

Comments about Photek Umbrella - Softlighter II - 36":

I've heard some say that the Softlighter is overpriced.

Sure, I'd like it to bea cheaper, but do I feel that I haven't gotten my monies worth? Absolutely not! Everything seems very well constructed and though I've only had this modifier for a short few weeks it has served me very well. I've used it in multiple conditions and lighting. It packs a large soft punch for its relatively small size, and packs up small enough that I can throw the whole thing in a bag.

I'm certain that I will continue to be impressed by this guy, and find new ways to use it.

Do it. Get it. You'll love it!

Perfect Umbrella for me, much easier and faster to set up than my softbox, I can use it as a shoot through or a reflective umbrella as well. I like the 36" for being more portable than the 48 or 60". As a photographer who works primarily on location I couldn't ask for a better umbrella, except the ribs in the umbrella are still a little fragile for me, I would gladly pay more for something a little more rugged.

Comments about Photek Umbrella - Softlighter II - 36":

This umbrella is very affordable and gives a pleasing, flattering quality of light that is suitable for fashion or portraits. Its quick and simple to set up and breaks down in a few moments. Its light weight and small to transport. Annie Leibovitz has used them to good effect for years and she has access to any type of light modifier going, so that is a very good endorsement in my estimation. My only criticism is they are maybe a little delicate, so they are not designed for the heavy handed or very windy days outside.

This is a great product. I prefer the larger big brother but no one ever seems to have them in stock. I picked these up in the meantime and did the job. Can't go wrong.

This small umbrella has become my go-to light modifier for location portraits. It sets up easy and provides a nice directional soft light with Dynalite fan-cooled heads. Highly recommended.
