This is an excellent lens for both macrophotography and portraiture. I wish it was a bit less expensive, but the build quality and optical design is superb. The fast f/2.8 aperture makes focusing quite fast. I know there are some reviewers who say it's a slow-focusing lens, but my experience has been quite the opposite. It focuses quite fast provided you give it a resonably high-contrast subject. Knowing when to use the focus limit switch helps a lot in this regard -- if you're shooting portraits or wildlife (or anytyhing further than 3 feet away), there's no reason to enable the full focus range. The fast aperture also makes precision manual focusing much easier. For portraits, it means that you can throw the background completely out of focus and isolate your subject.Like all the Micro-Nikkors, the sharpness of this lens is as good as it gets. On my D800 it reveals an awe-inspiring amount of detail in subjects large and small. While performance is quite good at f/2.8, this lens really shines between f/4 and f/11. At f/16, diffraction is noticeable, and at f/22 and beyond the resolution is certainly reduced somewhat. That said, the lens is still useable up to it's maximum f-stop (the max. f-stop changes depending on the focusing distance). While I certainly notice the diffraction softness while pixel-peeping, it's still possible to make beautiful 8x10 and even 11x14 prints from shots taken at f/32.The 105mm focal length is great for macro because it lets you get close to the subject without having to be right on top of it. On full frame cameras, it affords a comfortable distance for head+shoulders portraits, while still keeping the background soft and out-of-focus. On DX cameras, the effective focal length of ~150mm works well as a medium telephoto (and it's still sharp as a tack), though for portraits on DX I'd still prefer the 85mm/1.8G or 50mm/1.4G.The bokeh ranges from good to excellent, depending on the focusing distance. At focusing distances between 3 and 30 feet, and apertures at or below f/4, the bokeh reminds me of my Rolleiflex f/2.8 when shot wide open (which I happen to love). At macro distances, it's soft and even. At 30 feet and beyond the bokeh is still quite nice, but not as soft it is close up.The VR functionality is nice for portraits and handheld documentary work. For macro work, it's always wise to use a tripod, VR or no.If you're looking for FX glass that can do exceptional portrait and macro work, you really can't do any better than this lens.

I rented this lens (TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!!) because I thought I wanted it. After using it for a week, I know I don't.

Aside from macro, this lens is inferior to the 135 f2 DC and the 70-200 f2.8 VRII in just about every way. The focus (modern silent wave) hunted badly under both low light and good light conditions, up close and at normal working distances. The 135 and 70-200 don't have that issue. Focus on both the 135 and 70-200, under the same conditions and settings (point focus, focus point on something with lots of contrast) was fast and accurate even on the 135 using the body focus motor. They never hunted, even under low light.

Not sure what the issue was with the 105, but I can't use a lens that won't quickly come to focus. I might as well buy and old AI lens (for an 1/8 the cost) and just use that because I basically used this lens in manual to get any shots. It is deal breaker. I can't use a lens that I can't get to focus quickly...

Otherwise, macro was sharp and workable and the focus breathing didn't bother me. Images were sharp and contrasty, assuming whatever I was taking a picture of didn't get bored and wonder off in the week it took to get focus.

Outstanding lens, very happy with purchase

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens:

My first foray into macro photography- lens performs awesomely, am using it with D600. I'm new to photography but realized, correctly, lighting is equal to the lens in importance. So I overkilled and bought the Nikon R1 kit from the B&H used site. It is also outstanding both for macro and expanding light options everywhere else, like backlighting. The combo immediately challenged me on my first project, a small shiny brass badge with tiny painting and engraving. I haven't yet mastered simultaneously bright enough light to capture all details, low enough light for no glare or wash out and no shadows. But it's fun. Regarding the "focus hunting" in some comments, I don't know their specifics but the lens has a switch for objects outside.5 meters away specifically to reduce focus time-details are in the manual. I also ordered with this a NC filter for a scratch guard because it's less than a foot from many subjects

Best glass I own to date

By JD Photo

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens:

I bought this lens to get started in the world of macro photography and I have to say I have not been disappointed. It is very sharp and a pleasure to shoot through.

I also plan to use it for some portrait work, but since it us so sharp I'll need to modify my workflow a little to soften up the images a bit .

Pros: Very sharp images at all apertures though f8 seems to be the sweet spot.

Large focus ring makes it easy to manually focus when close to a subject.

Cons: Not really a con, but a bit too sharp for portraits. Requires a little more post processing.

If your thinking of getting into macro, you owe it to yourself to get this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens:

As the title says then lens in incredibly sharp, the bokeh is amazing. Even wide open it's quite sharp. This is one lens that after trying I can't see myself without it. Amazing for macro shots, just as good for portraits. If you are considering it, buy it. You won't regret it.

I purchased this lens for macro photography. This is a superior product not only for close-ups, but general photography as well. The only drawback, and a minor one at that, is that it's not truly a fixed maximum aperture lens. In all other aspects this lens is fantastic! Technical details aside, all anyone needs to know is that this lens will not disappoint. A must have product for photo enthusiasts

I have also used with the 1.7x teleconverter with excellent results. Its macro capabilities have also been a nice surprise, sharp and tight at the edges.

I purchase this lens along with the 24mm f/1.8G and 85mm f/1.8G. All, along with the 50mm f/1.4G I already had, replaced all my old "D" lenses These new lenses do work better on my new D-750. The Micro is no exception. This is the first lens I've owned with VR. One thing I'll pass along is the AF-S 105mm micro comes with the longest hood I've ever seen. I took my old AF 85mm f/1.8D lens hood (HN-23 / 62mm) and use it in place of the plastic one. It's metal and also will use a 77mm lens cap on the front of the hood. It's much easier to remove and put on. Again, these are all great lenses.

              Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens:

I have owned three different 105mm Micro Nikkor lenses. From the start, they've been excellent, sharp, sensitive lenses with pretty quick focusing; not much hunting, with the first one I got around ten or fifteen years ago, already having quite a bit of experience with micro (in Nikon lenses) and known as macro in other brands; Olympus, for example.
I decided to indulge and buy the next embodiment of the 105mm micro lens. I was very pleased. More precision, quicker focusing with less hesitation. even better optics than the previous model. I have recently graduated to this latest one, with Vibration Reduction. That in itself adds real, measurable benefits to the lens. The optics have improved considerably, yet again.
I still have much use for my 60mm micro lens; for different, but similar needs. It is still a gem.
I have only had this lens for ten days or so, and have many more experiments and explorations in mind. I am using it with my D810, my first full frame camera, which has been extremely worthwhile. It is an exciting journey. Thank you, Nikon.

If this is your first macro lens: take it outdoors and get up and close to photograph small plants and insects. You will see a whole new exciting world that was previously invisible. I bought this lens to photograph small toys and figures, and it works really well for that purpose.

For this lens specifically: the vibration reduction feature is definitely helpful. Autofocus is fast, but not necessarily sufficient to focus on fast flying insects, you might be better off using manual focus for those.

Overall, I have been very happy with this lens, and have had lots of fun with it since the first day I got it.

                  Comments about Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens:

I just started using this lens and set up practice shots for micro photography, with great results. When I went in to editing mode I was pretty surprised, as for about the first time I can recall, there was just nothing to edit! Crisp and detailed photos my first time out with it. Not perfect, but Great quality from Nikon, worth the investment. I used it w a circular polarizing lens although I am sure I would have been fine without it.
