I collect old military items including photos and negatives. Recently I acquired 380 glass plate negatives pertaining to the Spanish American War and early Logging they range in sizes from 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" up to 8" x 10". I am totally illiterate when it comes to electronic equipment and decided to have them scanned by a professional. The cost was going to be well over $1000.00. I thought that a tad high, so did some research, asked a few questions, swallowed hard, and ordered my 700. I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER WITH PURCHASE! Set-up took only minutes and with-in one hour I was getting beautiful results. Many of the plates were damaged and so dark that I could barely see an image holding them up to a strong light. With the SIMPLE contrast and light adjustments on the machine, every single plate was salvaged! I have never completed a survey for any product, but felt compelled to share my experience about this one.

Bought to immediately scan a thousand family negatives/slides, 1920 to present, with several thousand more to follow eventually. Scans are not significantly better than the 4490, most old family negatives are out of focus or faded anyway. Holders are terrible. Many of the transparencies/negatives don't fit. So film area guide used with glass sheet for flattening and to avoid Newton Rings. Thumbnail (auto) view overcrops or erratic, have to do the MF film one at a time regardless of MF size settings in scanner. Overall, slightly better than the 4490, mainly because of larger scan area. Software controls too small for incremental adjustments during scan set up. No experience with modern sharp negatives. My 4490 was dying, and I would buy again, but not to replace a working 4490.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

As a scanner, this beast is beautiful. The scan quality is absolutely superb. Just pop on a picture and hit scan (I changed the DPI to 1200 and the bit depth to 48, just for fun), and in a (very) short time you'll get a gorgeous scan on your computer. I couldn't ask for anything more as far as digitally recreating a physical photograph. The price is also very fair.It comes with a number of "attachments" or "frames" that you can place on the scanner itself. They allow you to pop in film of various sizes, and set up the Preview in the Epson Scan software to scan multiple columns of film, as separate images, allowing you to scan multiple rolls of film at once. You can then pop in new rolls of film, and they'll be in the identical place because of the frame, allowing you to just hit the Scan button again. The reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because the frames only come for film, and not for photographs. It would be relatively easy for them to make one for photographs, too - the largest film frame is 4x5 inches. The photographs I'm scanning are 4x6 inches (and a select few at 5x8 inches). There's absolutely no frame for this. I compensated by taping a thin, straight peice of paper down the horizontal center of the scanner, creating two halves. In the Preview window, I make two boxes, one for the top half and one for the bottom half. I can then pop in two pictures and hit Scan, and I am easily able to scan two images at once. Of course, the scan area is larger than the photograph, so I then run it through Photoshop's Crop and Straighten tool, which is easily automated. In all, it required a little tape and some time letting Photoshop run to fix, but for a scanner of this quality, I would really expect a frame for standard sized photographs, not just film.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I bought this scanner after researching machines capable of 4x5 or larger image scans, so that's what led to this choice. So far, I can't really judge my opinion very well. My first issue is, how do I know if it's truly focusing on the negatives? There is no calibration process, so it comes down to trial and error using the little plastic feet on the film holders. After several tests, I still am unconvinced if I have achieved best focus. Another annoyance is there is dust under the bottom glass. So now I need to get into taking it apart and cleaning it. This is the way it came and I see others have had the same experience. And if you'd like to travel back in time to "state of the 90's" software, look no further than the Epson scanning interface. Not only is it not very user friendly, it is clunky, cryptic and requires much trial and error to figure out what's going on. Why on earth has this software not been redesigned?Until I can somehow test that I'm truly optimizing focus on the scans the jury is out in my mind about this scanner. But I see few alternatives so my review is mixed at this point, plus I've spent my $ so I'll just have to live with it.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I'm scanning a LOT of 4x5 negatives from the forties and fifties that I acquired. The V700 does the job well and I have gotten some excellent images with this scanner. The film holding tray is flimsy, but it does the trick. I'm interested in getting a better film holder to compare results. I'm a novice, so take that into consideration. It met all of my expectations and then some.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I'm completely ambivalent about this scanner. On the one hand, it seems like it was designed to be quite high quality. It can be told to scan at resolutions higher, in certain instances, than the film emulsion and the lens that were used to make the original image. Great! On the other hand, the bundled LaserSoft Imaging SilverFast software has a number of issues that make me wonder how they can stay in business. The software seems *very* buggy, and I can't always adequately address the things that I'd like to modify with my film originals. I frequently have to re-boot after one of several recurring issues has crashed the program and I lose my work. There are some really goofy things that will occasionally happen that just simply make no sense at all. And why can't I reasonably save presets???Perhaps it's a classic case of the software having been designed by engineers, and not by real photographers who actually have to use the product. So, should I just use the generic Epson software and ignore the SilverFast which made the scanner cost a lot more? idunno.I also find it rather ironic that the price on this scanner was lowered by B&H *after* I bought mine...I've used this scanner on both positive and negative film in 35mm, 6x6cm, 6x7cm, 4x5, and 8x10 formats.I bought an extra 35mm slide holder, and an extra 35mm negative holder to speed the transition from one batch scan to the next.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

Having used the Epson Perfection 4490 for many years, I was dreading the task of finding a replacement when the time came. I was pleasantly surprised at how seamless the change was. Simply dragging the new software into my apps folder loaded the driver and placed the PhostoShop plug-in where it belonged.
The only negative so far was figuring out the identity and use of six (6) small plastic peices that came in a bag labeled 142221501. With no mention of this part in the documentation, I looked high and low for a description. I finally found a mention of "spacers" used with the slide/film holders!

After using an older scanner made by a different manufacturer for years, I'm pleased with the results of the Epson V700 Photo Scanner. I used to only be able to scan one slide at a time, now I can do a dozen. Not only are the scans of better quality than my old scanner, they are also done faster. As a bonus, the flatbed scanner on the Epson allows me to scan prints as well as slides.

My Epson 4990 finally pooped out and I bought the V700 from B&H to replace it. The V700 produces very nice scans and the EPSON software does a great job. HOWEVER, I installed the SilverFast software that came with it and it is SO BAD I was going to return the scanner until I uninstalled the SilverFast and realized the same Epson software that was on the 4990 is on the V700 and it works great.Overall, the scanner is intuitive and easy to use and does a very good job of scanning. I'm very pleased with it.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I have more than 25,000 slides and needed a way to digitize 20-image PrintFile sheets as "contact sheets". Using the V700's 8x10 transparency mask, I am able to do this easily; the image area of the PrintFile sleeve exactly fits the V700's 8x10 mask. To eliminate the overexposed areas between the slide mounts, I created another mask from cut black paper (Plike paper works best) that fits between the sleeve and scanner that effectively makes the background black. 1200 dpi scans take ±4 minutes and create individual slide images that are about 1100x1600 which is good enough for me to review when deciding which slides deserve a higher resolution scan. The resulting images are even good enough for a quick-and-dirty presentation on an HD TV, depending on how clean the slide and its sleeve are.

Easy to setup and connect to my Mac. Brackets for 35mm slides sturdy and easy to load. Over 4 days I scanned about 535 35mm slides and 800 photos. Import into iPhoto looks great

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I have used an Epson Perfection 1200 scanner for many years to scan my negatives and slides. It is showing its old age so I bought the Perfection V700. Apart from the 4.0 DMax which gives much better results I can batch scan up to 24 negatives at a time which saves a considerable amount of time. My only problem is that the scanner (or software?)is not very tolerant with under or over exposure and in those cases you have to select and scan each negative individually. Another minor irritant was that after I had installed the scanner Photoshop Elements did not find it. It is necessary to copy the TWAIN file from one folder into another. Once I had read about this and followed the instructions the scanner worked like a dream. Another minor criticism is that the negative carriers are rather flimsy so you have to handle them very carefully. Once I got over these obstacles I found the scanner to be very useful and I'm getting excellent results that are well worth the trouble I had until I got used to it.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

Why I wanted this scanner:My reason for purchasing the scanner was to digitize some of my 2300 slides. They go from 1965 to 1993. The oldest were 49 years old. So, now to the scanner: I did not plan on printing anything bigger than 5"x7", so I scanned using Epson Scan, at "Full Auto Mode" with the compression set at the lowest (1), and 300 DPI (yep that is correct). I also used "Auto Rotation" and "Color Restoration". A sheet of 12 slides took somewhere around ten minutes to scan. I also purchased another slide holder, so that while scanning in one holder I could load up another holder, and repeat until done. The scans ran pretty good. I printed out a couple of the scans on 8 ½ x 11 paper and they were good. I expected them to be bad as I only used the 300 DPI mode. It must have been because I had compression set at 1. I scanned in 954 slides in approx. 11 days. I did have a few (maybe one) anomalies. One being that my really old slides were taken with an instamatic camera. This camera produces square slides. The "Auto Orientation" setting was turned on, and sometimes rotated the slide 90 degrees, thinking it was a rectangular slide. I did get a few of these 90 degree rotations with rectangular 35mm slides if the edges were black. Before I had a handle on the 90 degree rotation problem, I called Epson support for some help. Their answer was that the machine was defective. Yeah for sure! I sent them screen print examples, as they requested and did not get a reply. Tech support?Software: I used the "Epson Scan" for scanning. I am currently learning "Abobe Photoshop Elements 10", which did not have a manual. (that cost me an extra $[$]from [@]). I attempted to use the "Silverfast SE8" that came with the scanner. It could not find the scanner. Maybe I need to reinstall it. If "Adobe Elements 10" does not do the trick I may revisit "Silverfast SE8".In summary:Pretty good scanner. Did the job I needed to have done. Now I need to decide whether to sell it or do some odd side jobs with it. Oh yeah before I forget. The people at B & H Photo in Manhattan were very helpful, and the price was approx. $70 less than Amazon after the New Year.Oh PS the file size was approx. 1-1.5 meg for my settings. I attempted to use 1200 DPI and the files size was approx. 12 meg. Toooo big for the internet.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I am quite satisfied with this scanner, and wanted to make a couple of points beyond what the other reviewers are making. First, it appears like an earlier model of this scanner likely shipped with a Firewire port. My model (purchased Jan 2014 from B&H) DOES NOT HAVE A FIREWIRE PORT! Further, I think I am quite OK with the OEM software that came with this scanner. The Silverfast software that is sent with this scanner is quite bad, and looks like it was programmed by a two-year old. I tried VueScan, but my OEM software produced better scans, and offered clearer options everytime.

The Concord Historical society purchased this scanner to scan the many negatives ,positives and glass plates in our collection and we are delighted how well the Epson v700 photo scanner and software is preforming for us and the great cost savings that we have by producing our own finished photographs. We highly recomend this scanner.

I've been using desktop scanners since the mid 80s, and this is by far the best value and easiest from which to get great results. B&H, as always, is such a wonderful company with whom to do business!
