Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

This recorder represents an excellent balance between complex capability and ease of use. For the neophyte sound tech, this box won't drive you to drink. We have used ours for years to record audio for radio and television programs aired nationally. It has not failed once.As though that weren't enough, the factory support is first-rate. In fact, we have very rarely needed assistance from the factory, and none of those instances ever involved defective operation.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

I recently got this to replace what I was previously using, which was a "Zoom H4n". The H4n is a very popular recorder, mostly due to its very low price and its very good feature set. However, I was constantly frustrated by the Zoom. First, a little background on what I do. I am an aspiring sound designer. I don't record interviews or music, but instead I record sound effects. I need extremely sterile recordings so they can blend with other sounds, and I need very high resolution so I can perform really heavy editing to the sounds, such as pitching and speed changes. This is where the Zoom failed. While the Zoom H4n does 24/96, it has a COLOSSAL amount of self-noise. It's impossible to record all but the absolute loudest of sounds without them being ruined by hiss. In other words, I could get clean recordings of large-caliber guns, but anything quieter was always ruined by self-noise.
This is where the Sound Devices 702 descends from the heavens in a ray of light. This recorder is superb in every conceivable way. The build quality is outstanding, the feature set is incredible, the performance is flawless, the menus and user interface are exceptional. But most importantly, the pre-amps are very quiet. Now, of course, the Sound Devices 702 costs more than seven times what the Zoom H4n does, but I would argue that it is worth every penny and more.
The 702 is built like a tank, with a metal body held together very well. The menus are very, very easy to navigate, and they can be navigated very quickly as well, (the Zoom's menus were a nightmare), and there are tons of settings for just about every application you could imagine, and yet it is very easy to learn. The gain controls are easily accessed, but retract to prevent them from being bumped which could change the gain. The face buttons are all very easily identifiable, even in a hurry, combinations of these buttons can be used as shortcuts for things such as low-cut filters and phantom power, which lets you skip the menus altogether. Also a nice touch, there are protruding, metal "bumpers" on the front of the device that protect the face buttons and the screen from damage if the device were to be dropped. In short, the build quality and design are simply spectacular. The battery life is better than I expected from the small battery it comes with, but you can also get a larger battery if necessary. I couldn't find something to complain about if I wanted to. Incredible build quality, incredible sound quality, incredible user interface, and very portable, which for a sound designer, is very important, as I am usually chasing something, or going up into mountains to record guns and things being smashed.
It is quite expensive compared to many other recorder options, but you get what you pay for. It may cost 7 times more than some other recorders, but I would argue it is worth even more than that.

I use this digital recorder to record audio for HD Video, music instrument and vocal recording, and field sound recording. I purchased this recorder to upgrade from another system and I continue being delighted with the capability and quality of sound recorded using this unit. Do your own research and you will find out this recorder is an industry benchmark for quality digital recording. The improvement in functionality, build and quality of recording attained using this device makes the unit cost a bargain.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

What can I say which hasn't already been said - this is a top notch recorder, one of the best recorders that money can buy. And with CF dropping its price over time and increasing storage capacities, its even easier to load it up with enough active storage at any given time that it becomes the equivalment of having an SSD drive.

The preamps are outstanding, very clean and the sonic qualities and nuances they capture have a very audible depth and dimension - wonderful character.

The form factor is quite incredible for the quality of parts and clean signal path, as the entire unit is not much bigger than the equivalent size of stacking 2-3 DVD cases on top of one another. This device is built like a tank, it's very obvious just by handling the device and scrutinizing the craftmanship.

The interface is very simple and intuitive, offering a variety of customization options and a handy set of hotkeys - all of which allow the user to customize just about everything in this recorder. One minor limitations I find is that I wish it offered sightly more comprehensive HPF and Limiter parameters a la the 788T firmware, and full UDMA support to ensure CF cards are truely taking advantage of their read/write speed offerings.

The M/S headphone monitoring option is a huge plus especially because it allows you to still record the raw M/S tracks in the background, while being able to non-destructively "confidence monitor" the general M/S decode integrity.

The stock battery which comes with it is a pretty weak 1500 mAh unit (not acceptable at all for a day of a field recording), and thus I recommend grabbing an XL B3 or two (about 6700 mAh I believe). And luckily, the power unit on this recorder uses the Hirose I/O, so when you're ready to upgrade to the NP1, you're all set to go.

The only other gripe I have is that since the 702 is a very bottom of the 7-series product line, it doesn't get high priority for firmware updates (788 recieves one at least 1 time a year or more, the 702's last firmware update was 2 years ago). Not just for bug fixes, but new features as well. Just something to bear in mind.

That minor gripe aside, this is a fantastic recorder I am proud to have in my arsenal, you very much get what you pay for, and best of all Sound Devices is located within the US (Reedsburh, WI... the same place of manufacturing. I believe there is wonderful something to be said for that, the quality shows big time.

The standard for quality clean reliable sound recording motion picture production. Battery powered or line powered. One the best features is you get a real thorough paper manual full of correct and specific instructions so you can use this product in any manner right away. That alone is worth it these days. Thumbs up to the tech department at Sound Devices for having clear knowledge of their products and passing that info to their customers up front.
If you are an old reliable and use a clapper, get the 702, if you want the latest and need timecode generation, get the 702t.

Use this for low budget video shoots. As mentioned in the headline, the sound is great and it's head to handle. I haven't had to test the durability myself, but it feels solidly built. The menu is easy to understand and the navigation controls are easy to use. Great shortcuts for common functions. Never having used a Sound Devices machine before, it was recording sound 5 minutes after I took it out of the box. Love it.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

For gathering audio on location it doesn't get much better. I had a zoom for a while which didn't provide phantom and the handling noise was high. Other recorders are clunky and some of them function oddly like first press of the record button goes into pause or something - that's a missed take waiting to happen. Not the case with the 702. It is very rugged, runs in record priority so no matter what menu you're in pressing record starts rolling right away. There's also pre-record buffer so 2 seconds before you start recording gets written to the file. Phantom power on board and independent OR linked channel operation. Rotary pre-amp pots are smooth and can be pushed in to avoid a level bump for fixed volume recording. Overall I found it easy to operate. A worthwhile investment.

This is a fine and elegant recording machine reminding one of of a Nagra from 20 years ago. It has very fine mike preamps and tremendous flexibility, but for simplicity it also excels. Just hit the "record" button and you're recording, no matter what you had been doing before.

Pretty simple to rate this piece of equipment. It's built like a tank and works exactly as you would expect. I pair this with a Sound Devices 302 mixer and it works perfectly. One minor nit is that the audio ins on the recorder are on the opposite side from the audio outs on the mixer, which is slightly annoying when you have them both in a bag.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

Field recording is this unit's purpose. It replaces separate components - phantom power supply, preamps, portable power source, and portable recording medium. Separate components can do the job, but form a complex signal chain and are unwieldy to transport and set-up. The 702 produces better recordings than any other setup I've tried, and does so as a single, very small device.

Its controls are logically located and designed, and appear to be of very high quality. Its layout is clear enough to enable using it without consulting the user manual. However, you must digest the product's manual to appreciate the scope of the unit's capabilities, which are very impressive. Once you do, it becomes relatively simple to alter any setting as you wish.

There are less expensive options. I've tried many of them. The 702's performance exceeds theirs by a substantial margin. If producing high-quality field recordings is your goal, this unit will enable you to reach it. If you find a cheaper means to create comparable recordings, I'd be eager to hear about it. After more than a decade trying to do precisely that, however, none has become evident to me. The 702 does an excellent job, and comes at a correspondingly stiff price.

Whether it's worth it or not depends on whether you need top-shelf performance. If that's your primary consideration, the decision makes itself. If you don't require that level of performance, there are definitely cheaper alternatives.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

Sound Devices make great products and the 702 is no exception. It is simply the best made sound recorder you can get for the money. I have used lower quality products like the Tascam DR-100 and others, but is upset when told the file is corrupted by the machine. There are no false messages here and the CF Card does not break apart like the two other SD cards I used for the DR-100. If you are serious about your craft, then you should be serious about the inputs to your final product. I have owned three of these in the past and keep coming back to the Sound Devices 702. Enough said.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

The difference between this product and other solid state recorders are the connections. For starters the Hirose 4 pin connection is the defacto power input that has proven itself on the field, the confidence one has in this connection not snapping or pulling off accidentally is worth all, it means a great job stays great. The xlr inputs, the quiet pres and the ability to firmware update is a must if you are investing this much in a recording product. The solid metal body means you can go anywhere and not flinch, the intense LEDs that allows for daytime viewing, whether using with a mixer of by itself is still great, google the reviews and you will not find a negative one except an excerpt about the price, this however will keep you happy by not buying over and over, one time investment and a long term usage product.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

I mainly use this recorder on the field connected to my SD 302. Everything is so well-built and the knobs and buttons feel nice. Setup menu is a breeze. With that many options, the interface is really adequate, especially when you're on the field and you want quick access to everything. From the moment I saw this thing I just knew I had to get me one. The only gripe is you have to pay more for timecode and you can't use an external timecode generator with this (I asked B&H about this). I really don't have to discuss about the sound quality here. If you're seriously considering this machine, you know what it can do. If you have [$] lying around somewhere, buy this and buy spare batteries and you're good to go!

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

I use this mainly for recording live shows/performances, but it also comes in handy when I need to playback music pre-show (and want something more substantial than an iPad).

If I had to give one criticism, it would be that the outputs are of the mini xlr variety, and the adaptor cables are not included (extra $60 to get line level XLR out of the unit).

Otherwise, it is awesome, just like all sound devices products.

for me the 702 was perfect. by default it samples the WAV files at 30fps, but download WAVEAGENT, it's free and allows you to change the framerate to anything. 23.97 in my case. transfer the files from the CF card to your hard drive then drag that folder into WAVEAGENT choose the framerate and it converts everything at no quality loss in a few seconds. not bad. and it saved 600 bucks.

for quality and dependability and overall performance you can't beat a 7 series recorder. sound devices are the absolute best.

they used this thing on WALL-E for crying out loud.

Comments about Sound Devices 702 - High-Resolution 2-Channel Compact Flash Field Recorder:

The 702 Sound Devices recorder delivers quiet, dynamic, detailed, and clean sound. I'm sure there may be better professional recorders, but this unit is portable and delivers very professional results. It will reveal the quality of your microphones and amplifiers. Some of its majic may be the quality of its analog to digital and digital to analog converters. You do not have to go to 96k or 192k digitalization rates to get the good sound. 20x48k sounds excellent. I have used other portable recorders but this unit to my ear is by far the best. The unit is very flexible and yet very simple to use. As my video cameras have no time code ability, I chose the plain SD 702. It has been my most rewarding addition and is highly reccommended. It not only sounds great, its built to very high mechanical and component standards. At under $2000.00 it in my opinion is a best buy.
