We use this attenuator between our sound board and monitor speaker, as the levels from the board are considerably higher than needed. The attenuator allows us to have the monitor send level at a more reasonable point and avoid feedback if someone bumps the level too high.

In the long run we will use fixed attenuators in this role, as they are less prone to error. The variable nature of this attenuator is ideal for determining the optimal attenuation to use, but a fixed unit the avoids accidental change.

So we recommend this item as a good tool bag item for fixing situations on the fly, but recommend fixed-level attenuators for use in systems that are used on a regular basis.

I patch in my Alesis mixer to many different sound systems on the road. Many have microphone inputs with no adjustable gain or input pads. My mixer output distorts these inputs, so I needed a pad. The Hosa was the only one in stock, so I bought it. It does the job, but the switch that varies the level of pad is very cheap and moves too easily. I will have to tape it down so it is not switched accidentally during a show. That is why I give it 3 stars, for the cheapness of construction. But so far it has done an acceptable job.

Good product. Does have the switch to vary the pad, and handy to have. Not as durable as the Switchcraft version, but certainly acceptable.

Our news photographers use these when they cover events like City Council meetings, where they get a feed from the meeting room PA system. Sometimes, the -40 dB position (the maximum attenuation) still leaves the level a bit hot, but tolerable.

I purchased this because my home-made subkick was too hot coming in on my focusrite preamp. The one that I received has a -20, -30, & -40db. other people have noted that the switch isn't tight enough, and I can see that, but it's not terrible. It does a very nice job of lower the signal from the speaker and allowing me to get useable audio.

I use these to reduce the gain on outputs from a soundboard to feed an H4N recorder. The attenuator switches function well. Although the items feel a bit light, the construction seems good. The fit is a little snug on the inputs to the H4N due to the thickness of the barrel at the connector - otherwise very pleased with my purchase for the relatively low cost.

Comments about Hosa Technology ATT-448 In-Line Attenuator:

The signal from the mixer board in my church was too hot for my Sony UTX-P1 plug-in transmitter. (The signal was too hot for the mic level setting, causing constant peaking and distortion even with the highest level of attenuation in the UTX-P1, but the signal was too weak for the line level setting.)

The Hosa ATT-448 did the trick. Setting it at a 30 decibel attenuation provided just the right level of attenuation. Now my sound is very good and undistorted. This was just what I needed.

Two of these Hosa ATT-448 in-line attenuators will travel in my gear bag from now on.

The price is right, and they are made in Taiwan, which in my experience generally means a high level of quality.

I use these on the road for sports broadcasts because I often don't know what kind of feeds I will get from house systems for PA and field/ice mics. They are inexpensive solutions. You might want to handle them with a bit of care as other similar inline attenuators I've seen appear to be a bit more sturdy, but that's not a worry with my setup.

After using hand-made pads for most of my career, I decided to buy a couple of new pads. I couldn't be happier with these. I use two medium or short mic cables and put the pad in-between them. That way the pad lies on the floor and is not hanging out of the mic, mic-pre, or outlet. The switch is easily adjusted with just your finger, the pad works with phantom, and sounds great. I have two mics that are very high output, and these pads allow me to not have the preamp all the way down, which sometimes still wasn't low enough. 5 stars from me.

Using a pair of these to balance the line level from many different mixing consoles going to my digital recorder is what I purchased these units for. I have also found them useful for microphone applications when the console has no "input pad." I like the fact that these have attenuation switches, (20, 30, 40db), which makes them great for many applications.

I use these to drop the input to a Zoom H4n. Works great.

For my purposes, the attenuator worked fine. I've only tried it on one setting thus far.

At our church we run a very hot, Shure MX418/C pulpit mic into a Peavey XR684 Mixer which has no mute button, only a 25db down button. Without this Hosa ATT-448 Attenuator I had to run the 25db down all the time and if I released it I got feedback. With the attenuator set at 20db that mic channel works fine, just like the others. I will tape the switch some time to make sure it stays in place but I think it would be OK without the tape. When money allows we hope to upgrade to a Peavey XR1212 or XR1220 amp-mixer.

We use this to drop 600 ohm balanced line level signal levels from a theatrical house mixer output so it can feed one channel of our video camera. The switchable attenuation makes it handy to accomodate various signal levels, but I am a bit concerned about the long term reliability of the multi-position switch. (this depends on a bunch of variables - oxidation, contact pressure, self wiping action, circuit design - is it a T or H circuit? - where is the switch used in the circuit? - etc.)It is certainly more predictable than the Rolls SLC 19 which it replaces. That unit has a noisy potentiometer and is difficult to set in a repeatable manner.

The combination of condenser mic and pre-amp going from low-Z to high-Z created a signal that was unmanageably hot. The B&H representative suggested the in-line attenuator which turned out to be the perfect solution for my problem. Hosa Tech ATT-448 now provides me with a workable, flexible signal at a low price.

Retains phantom power, great in an inline unit. The switchable pad is great for me because I record cars at the track, where cars are of widely varying volumes. Only thing I didn't like was the male end does not fit into the female xlr jacks on Zoom H4n's, as the casing is a bit too thick.
