Full frame, 8mm, 3.5 autofocus suitable for Nikon FX: does any other lens compete with this offering from Sigma? To my knowledge, the answer is no ... and that makes the quibble that follows a bit irrelevant. If you want what this lens offers, then this is what you've got to get, at least for now. Sigma has carved out their own monopoly. On to the quibble: I hate the external focus ring. Hate it. I support lenses with fingertips under the lens, and it's a bear to do it with this thing without interfering with the @#$!! external focus, and perhaps harming the lens in the process. I haven't harmed the lens in this fashion yet, but must remind myself every time I put it on: watch out for the #$@$ external focus! There's barely room for the tips of my fingers for balance on the edge of the lens. Lousy ergonomics. Other than that, I'm a happy camper. I didn't expect reasonably speedy, sharp autofocus or ultra high quality output, but got both. It's a fine piece of glass. I second everything Justin L. wrote in his review.A special, important note to Capture NX users: if you see a big, fat ring in the center of images taken with this lens, go to Develop --> Camera & Lens Correction --> Vignette Control, and change Intensity to 0. That'll fix you up.

I baught last month I am using with D3X and D800,
sometimes Nikon cameras does not accept some lens
(forexaample I have SIGMA 150-500, i am using with D3x evrything is percfect each focal is sharp but I cant use it with D800 camera, results is horible)
my SIGMA 8mm results is not aceptble, terible... maybe there is a construction mistake, I dont know. focal 8mm thats mean hyper focal distance is so wide, right? if you use by f:11 after 1m to endles all of distance have to be sharp, right? but it is not!

I use the product for 360 degree photography, and it is a great sturdy piece of equipment. I'm super happy about the delivery time, I think I had the lens 2-3 days after ordering it.

I bought the lens to do google shoots and 360 panos which it does really well. The only thing I can fault about the lens is it doesn't have a switch to turn off the auto focus.

Does a decent job with circular images. The focus ring is very loose and needs to be taped down with gaffers tape for street shooting when using as an adapted lens.

I bought this for my Nikon D800E in order to shoot panaromas with only 4 shots around. This lens is the best panaroma lens I have ever owned and would highly recommend it. For best results use a tripod with a panaroma head. With the D800 or D800E use the center weighted or spot metering. Matrix metering doesn't work with auto focus. The other two work great.

I have been using this lens with my D90 to do virtual 360 tours. The lens has been great, works well, and takes great pictures. My only complaint is how bulky it is, but that's a small price to pay for such a great tool. The lens has such a wide angle, it's incredible! I would definitely recommend this lens to anyone who needs something like this.

Comments about Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye Lens for Nikon F:

I have the previous version of this lens (F/4). It is outstanding in resolution, even wide open. Edges get a bit soft at larger apertures, and chromatic abberations need some help, but with automatic CA correction software - not a problem. Besides, this is with the earlier verion. With minimal postprocessing you get corner to corner (well edge to edge) sharpness and contrast. Light falloff also needs some postprocessing correction so keep you iso on the low side to minimize shadow noise.

I used this lens for 8 years before I discovered that the Depth of Focus (not Depth of Field) meant that I couldn't just rely on setting the focus to 5 feet and get everything nice and sharp. My copy has infinity occur at a setting on the lens scale of 1 meter. Turns out this is important for lenses with very shallow depth of focus like this one. So if you think you have a "soft" copy of this lens, use your Live View magnifier to check your focus. Once I discovered this it was like getting a new lens - very sharp.

Test shots only so far, but they strongly suggest that this lens is going to really good.

My first outing with definite plans to use this lens is tomorrow, when I intend to take some shots with it on my D800, placed close to the glass of some aquaria at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. No, this isn't an original idea as I've seen similar shots taken by a friend of mine - and they were really great!

I have steered clear of Sigma lenses due to their awful "flocking" surface finish - which I find to be very unprofessional! However, this 8mm fisheye has so little area thus finished that I don't object too much. Anyway, what other choices do I have for a full-frame 180 degree fisheye? I already have the Nikon 16mm f/2.8, but it's not "extreme" enough for some of the shots I want to capture.

So, although I haven't yet used this lens for anything other than tests, it seems to be a very successful acquisition and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's outing!

Comments about Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye Lens for Nikon F:

I carry my 8mm Sigma with me everywhere to use on my full frame D700. I also have the 14-24 Nikon, and while that is a higher quality lens (a bit sharper, and it doesn't do the "circle" thing), it is huge and it weighs a TON, and is therefore a bear to carry around.

The Sigma does a wonderful job of capturing my world the way I see it. Somehow, our eyes are aware of things way to the left and way to the right, just the way this 180 degree lens works, and I love using it to record events -- all the people at a table of 10 at a wedding, or all the people in the luxury box at a baseball game, all with one photo, and not having to make anyone move. (And I actually love the circle thing! It makes beautiful 16 by 16 photos on my Epson printer).

About the only drawback that I have found is that, not surprisingly, the Nikon exposure system doesn't know what to make of the data that it gets from this lens, so I sometimes have to take two or three photos to get the right exposure.

Comments about Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye Lens for Nikon F:
