I have several camera bags, and this is my perennial favorite. I have a couple bigger bags, some smaller "zoom packs", and a backpack. I like this bag for three reasons: First, it's just the right size. Second, "the bag is not fussy". Third, the bag is ugly--i.e. it's not a thief magnet. The bag does not have much padding, which means it's not ideal for transporting equipment. It's designed for carrying gear while you walk. Here are some additional details:

I don't like to carry around more than a camera body with a zoom lens attached, perhaps one other lens, and a flash. This bag holds that with enough room left over for some extra stuff. I can lay my camera on it's back in the bag with my main lens attached, add a second lens in the main compartment, and throw a flash in one of the jumbo side pockets. The camera and everything else can come out in an instant.

This gets to my second point; "the bag is not fussy". I saw this phrase in a review somewhere before I bought this bag. The phrase basically sums up the key strength of all Domke bags. I'm lazy, I don't want to fiddle with zippers, and sift through three dozen specialized mini-pockets. This bag has a large main compartment with minimal padding/protection, two large side pockets, a wide front pocket and a tight pocket in the back that's suitable for books and maps. (The flap has a zippered lining as well.)

A couple years ago, I went to Paris with this bag. It held my camera, photo paraphernalia, a couple water bottles, a wind breaker, a guide book and a map. Anything smaller would not have been large enough, anything larger would have been just too much to haul around all day long, and anything "nice looking" would have made me a target. (I purposely got the sand colored bag (vs the black one) because it looks like it's full of junk rather than expensive camera gear.)

In summary, this is an outstanding bag for hauling around a modest amount of gear. If you need something you can walk around with all day long, this is the answer.

So, I bought this originally to hold my D810. Probably not a wise move due the size of the bag, but I'll say that everything fit well. The D810 w/ 35mm f/2, 28mm f/1.8, hard drive, hoods, etc. I'm a prime carrying guy, no zooms. Anyway, I found myself fighting to get access to this camera, and I think it's because the bag needs a little more "structure" or stiffness. I've found that I don't like the c-clip or velcro. I'd rather have my camera secured by a leather strap and tab-type like the Billingham. Just a personal preference. Anyway, it's awesome that this is made in the USA (f*&k yeah!), but I'll be moving on to a Billingham with some more room and structure to the shape. Also, I've moved to a mirrorless system, which is smaller, but still the floppiness of the bag just gets in my way. To each their own.

All these adjectives are appropriate. This is my third Dome, from large to small, each has its specific uses. Dome's are extremely well designed and built like tanks from quality materials. There is simply nothing better.

    Perfect bag

    By Audrey P

    from Everett, WA

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Olive):

It holds everything I want it to, and is extremely durable. I have a camera body, a 50mm and a 70-200 zoom, two filter wallets, battery charger and a notebook. It reminds me of military bags of green canvas that I used when I was on active duty. I expect this bag to last for quite awhile.

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Black):

I have other Domke bags but this is my new favorite. Unlike the other bags, it doesn't have movable inside compartments but has 2 lens compartments sewn left and right and your camera goes in the middle. It includes a velcro'd divider should you wish to divide the central area for some reason. Outer pockets can hold lots of stuff including lens or flash. Holds all I need when carrying one body and two or three lenses protected minimally in a classic canvas bag that forms itself to your hip over time. Retro flap clasp is still a pain in the A to open with one hand but it certainly never comes undone. Looks like progress on the clasp issue with their new line of bags and I wish I could retrofit. But all in all, I respect the "take it or leave it" old-style design of this bag.

      Great bag

      By Phototaker

      from Mobile, AL

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Olive):

Very well constructed camera bag- should last for years. Simple design with the right amount of pockets and space to carry gear on a days outing. Easily holds dslr with two or three lenses from wide angles to short telephoto. Or, leave a lens out and slip in a bottle of water instead. I extend the strap so that the bag can be carried like a sling rather than a shoulder bag. Side and front pockets have plenty of room for extra gadgets and accessories and secure with strong Velcro closures. Only improvement might be some padding on the strap for added comfort, but I'm very satisfied nonetheless and highly recommend it.

I like the fact that it is NOT rigid like all the rest. This way it conforms to your body AND the amount of equipment you happen to have in it at the time. Don't be mistaken that you think there is not enough padding... I've used Domkes for over 20 years and have never had an issue with lack of padding. It is the best "working" bag out there. Not ideal for storing everything you own, however. I carry an EOS 6D with a 16-35, a 70-200, 28-135,light meter, batteries and charger. A flash would fit in a pinch but I don't use one.

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Olive):

Can't go wrong with this bag other than outgrowing it. It's perfect for me since I force myself to carry 2 lenses only, maybe 3 if they're low profile. Love the long pocket in the back. If I could add anything, it'd be a sweatproof backing, maybe a rubberized panel. This is a great bag though.

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Sand):

With no room to spare, It can hold my 6D, 24-105L, 16-35L, 100-400L, 50 1.8, 1.4X extender, One 25mm macro extension tube, 2 batteries and a charger, two lens hoods for the two smaller lenses, a mini tripod, several SD cards, cables and cords, lens cleaners, etc. with no problem. I can even put my camera in the bag with the 100-400 on it and easily fasten the flap although the top bulges a bit! I even had one of the pockets empty to put a water bottle in! there woud be room for a Wallet, keys, etc. , I just didn't keep them in my bag. the only thing I wasn't able to fit was the 100-400 lens shade! I love the color as it doesn't draw attention. There's an extra strap than seems to pull double duty as a back located strap to hold the bag to your larger rolling luggage handle or to be used as a carrying strap on the extra rings next to the ones that hold the main carrying strap. Its only problem is that the little extra carrying strap doesn't have an attached padded handle so its uncomfortable for anything other than a short carry. I purchased an aftermarket removable padded shoulder strap that doubles as the padded handle for the little strap when needed. My only complaints are the velcro is noisy on the main flap, but a glued on cover flap for the Velcro fixed that and the steel clip for securing the front cover is really hard to undo! I would have preferred one of the plastic squeeze units, even though they can be cheap and broken more easily. The other slight gripe is there is no padding on the outside of the bag, but the way its designed, the fragile lenses and camera are mostly isolated by other layers of canvas or pockets to the bag. I'm not rough on my equipment so its not much of an issue to me. Believer it or not, ALL the above listed lenses diameters WILL fit into the side pockets WITHOUT the lens hoods. I put them in one of the external side pockets nested inside each other. Overall very pleased with this bag, ESPECIALLY for the money!

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Black):

I used the backpack version of this bag for many years. Even after years of outdoor abuse, and carefree use, it's still in great shape! What I love about these bags is that they are made of thick durable canvas, and that they have a thick foam pad stitched into the bottom. The amorphous design allows me to store a surprising amount of gear for a midsize camera bag. Also, I have noticed that if you forget to clip the latch, it won't topple over and spill all your contents when you pick it up. In addition, it's a good looking bag that isn't ostentatious, and it gets better looking with use.

The only down flaw is that I wish it had more padding, but everything fits so well that items don't hit each other and organise themselves perfectly inside, if you use a medium size DSLR like I do (Nikon Df) and 4 lenses and an iPad (large) this bag is for you.

If you need a medium to small bag to travel, this is it. I walked around Tulum with it and it is very comfortable. Definitely recommend it for traveling.

I have the Domke F-2 that I use mainly to store gear and really like it. I wanted something a little smaller for a walk around bag. Decided to go with the Domke F-3X. I like the way it molds to your body while carrying it. It's a bag that you can load up with good amount of gear but it will also collapse down with less gear.

The only thing that would concern me is using it in an environment like the beach since there's not a complete enclosure, but I have a bag with a zipper for beach or lake trips. Domke bags don't have a lot of padding but it's never caused me any heartburn. The lack of padding means it's not stiff and bulky and it is padded on the bottom which is the most important place in my opinion. Overall a great bag!

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Black):

I have researched long and hard to find the right bag to fit my kit. I have owned a bulky cumpler 7MDH for a couple of years and finally decided to get the infamous Domke. I shoot with 2 big primes on a Nikon Df body. I wanted something easy to work out of and also wanted to be able to pack a lot of items when needed. I can fit my Df, 85 1.4 and 24 1.4 attached to the body with a bunch of accessories as well: notebook, memory cards, batteries, large blower, filters, iphone charger, bottle of water, wallet, keys, phone, and I still have plenty of room. I'm actually thinking of ordering another one just so I have a reserve after 10-20 years.

Comments about F-3X Shoulder Bag (Sand):

I can't get enough of this thing. I have another domke bag (f-5xa) for just carrying around a small rangfinder, but this fulfills my need for a medium sized, carry-everything-you-need-but-nothing-you-don't bag. It's wonderful. I love the novel internal arrangement that allows for great carrying/separation of equipment, but it's not the standard domke "box" arrangement. This doesn't have the most padding, but the contstruction of what materials are there is absolutely bombproof. Sand is a great color for this bag too. Buy it!
