Works well on both Nikon D750 and Canon SL1

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

I am into close-up photography of flowers, mainly. I was impressed by the images Imaging-Resources has of this lens on a Canon 5D. So I tried it on my D750 and liked the results, but I had a problem. It wouldn't autofocus for Live View stills. I sent the lens to Sigma in NY; got it back in a week with a firmware update and all seems well so far. No charge for the Firmware updates at least for my newly purchased lens. Being a vintage lens the USB docking station for updates is not an option.

I use LiveView exclusively because I can achieve better focus with it on the D750 than I can through the viewfinder. I can zoom in & put the focus exactly where I want it & the camera can do a far better job of doing the fine focus than I can. Incidentally, I do a lot of my shooting from a tripod as I like to get up close and personal with the flowers. I capture RAW image data and use autofocus as much as I can. I will switch to manual focus if need be, but that seldom happens on the D750 when I zoom in. Also, when using autofocus to take photos of flowers in a breezy situation I have the camera set up such that it will not release the shutter until focus is achieved. That means I can hit the remote's release button when I have the zoomed focus I want and that the camera will wait until it has focus before releasing the shutter. I can't compete with that. I get well focused shots that way that I cannot get with me controlling the shutter release.

Okay, I liked the Sigma 70mm optics so well on the Nikon that I ordered a used one for my Canon SL1 from Germany. I received it this past Saturday and autofocus works in LiveView on the Canon SL1, but not nearly as well as with my Nikon. I think this is a Nikon vs Canon body/firmware issue and not a Sigma lens issue. I am delighted with the picture quality I am getting from the lens and the SL1 when I shoot in manual mode and again zoom in to achieve focus where I want it.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

I needed a sharp no-nonsense lens for a large series of industrial close-ups, and my criteria was sharpness and virtually no linear distortions. The Lens performs well.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

This was a perfect match for this full-time Pro photographer. I needed a longer macro to get me near to 1:1 repro ratio with a further camera-subject distance. I bought it specifically to shoot a jewelery catalogue; but have found that the lens is a superb portrait lens as well as a top-notch medium fast (2.8)general use telephoto.
This is my 3rd Sigma lens for my Nikon bodies. I've been more and more impressed with the optics/color rendition/design/construction of Sigma lenses. I initially bought these as back-ups, but use them more and more as #1 lenses.
My only minor complaints are 1. The inability to reverse the lens shade and store it on the lens. This isn't a problem when the lens is off the camera (the shade stores nicely on the back of the lens); but is a minor problem when I want to store the lens on the camera. I do love that the provided shade is metal; and don't mind that it's a screw-on (not snap-on) 2. No auto focus/manual switch on the lens. Apparently this is true only on the Nikon version. Odd because all of my other Sigma/Nikon lenses have the switch. The camera control switch works very well if I need to focus manually. Nothing in the instructions to explain this; but easy enough to figure out.
Very glad I bought this lens

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

I mostly use this lens for portraits. I'd been using a 50mm on my Nikon D7000, which gave me an effective length (FOV) of 75mm, but I wanted something a little longer. This Sigma 70mm (effective 105mm) was just the ticket. One review site said it is one of the sharpest lenses they have ever tested, and they weren't kidding. Be prepared to do some post processsing on older women's faces. But you get sharp as sharp gets, eyes and hair, etc.; and the color and contrast are wonderful. Bokeh is lovely, too!Build quality is excellent, and the lens handles quite well. Put the focus limit switch on to speed up non-macro focussing. I could not be happier with my purchase. And of course, B&H did their normal, fast shipping; and it provides me comfort to know they are behind the sale.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

This lens, produces the most amazing, most sharp pictures I've ever done with my Nikon cameras.

            Downsides:
No internal focus motor, can't be used on D3100/D3200/D5100 (it can but in manual mode)
No focus override (once in AF mode, you can't turn the focus barrel)
Sometimes when focused to infinity, can't refocus back (on the D7000)
Slow compared to all the above mentioned, but not substantially
Metal hood, can't be reverse mounted

            10/10 image quality (at 2.8!!)
            8/10 built quality and handling
8.5/10 price (for a new lens, locally, inc tax)
            6/10 focusing speed
            10/10 Macro capabilty

Overall, if you are looking after a good prime for general use, and a superb macro lens, get this lens, full no reservations recommendation.

This is an FX lens, which on a DX camera gives a 105mm fov.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

I've had this lens for years....I can't even remember when I bought it. It is one of my two favorites when I need a sharp and shallow DOF shot - the other being Nikon's new 85mm f1.4 which I've had for a only few months now.

The Sigma is super sharp making it a nice portrait lens or macro. I have a D300. It's a little slow to focus and if you decide to try your luck with autofocus when taking macro shots, you will likely find that it hunts a bit but I don't normally rely on AF when shooting macro shots so the hunting is not an issue. I would not trade the sharpness for a lens that focused a little faster or hunted a little less. When I'm taking non-macro shots in all but dim light it focuses just fine.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

I was looking for a duel purpose macro/portrait lens and this fits the bill. I already own another Sigma lens and the quality of the glass and construction provided me the confidence that the 70 mm f/2.8 would meet my expectations.

I am in the process of upgrading from my old d40 to my new d700. For d40 owners, autofocus is not operational (certainly not a big deal for macro or portrait work). This lens generates stunning shots, on both platforms, with crisp clarity for primary subject and very nice bokeh. While I've just gotten this lens, I can see now that this will probably become my workhorse.

As alluded to above, I've been quite pleased with Sigma glass. When you ratio the end product quality over the price, it's hard to beat.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF:

I am using this 70mm Sigma EX DG primarily as a Macro lens on my Nikon D80, getting the net effect of a 105mm f/2.8 lens on the D80's APS-C sensor.
The build is excellent. The EX quality is evident. Smooth, quick AF.
Only negative is the screw-on lens hood...when not on camera you have to find a place to secure it, versus reversing and stowing on the lens itself like Sigma offers on its longer FL lenses...and Nikon offers on all lenses.
