Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

. Since I bought this lovely lady (it was a 2nd hand product and the plastic version, not the velvet version), my eyes are opened by the macro world! I also test this lens on portraits and it also gives stunning results. You can check my flickr test: /photos/pinhzoi88/14716831259/in/photostream/ (as the policy, I can't give the complete HTML)Focus is OK for me, not too slow as other people mention. I shoot macro and portraits, which are mostly stationery subjects, so I don't need the focus to be HSM/USM. You gotta switch to "limit" for advanced focus, or the lens will struggle hunting focus from infinity to its closest focus distance, which may take 270 degreee rotation of the focus ring.(I am using 1 1100D & 1 1D IIN bodies, I found that the focus seems to depend on the body. I had owned 1 Canon pancake 40mm f/2.8 and it's also tack sharp @f/4 on the 1D IIN but on the 1100D, sometimes it misses the focus. Now with the Sigma 70mm, I am able to get amazingly sharp result @ even f/2.8 with the 1100D!). Things that aren't so great about it: I just wish the hood that comes with it isn't screw-in type and is built from plastic/rubber. Once screwed in, you can't attach the lens cap with the hood. Other than that, this lens is just close to perfect!

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I tried different macro lens from Canon 100mm L and Canon 60mm Macro but this one is the sharpest. Nice bokeh too for portrait shot. No regrets in buying this lens.
Auto focus is slow but it is accurate no complain about it.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I got this lens for its macro capabilities and medium lenght. Also I shoot with a full frame camera and a cropped sensor camera so it is compatible with both. The lens is sharp and light. I would recommend this lens however its biggest draw back is that the lens is super loud! Like crazy gear grinding loud. Also the focus is not built into the lens but "zooms" out to focus. The lens actually gets longer like a zoom lens but is a fixed F stop so it doesn't get closer, just in focus.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

This is an amazing lens. Good colour rendition, great contrast, sharp, priced right, I can not find a fault. Unlike many other affordable lenses, it does not feel plastic. It is also light and small enough to walk around without attracting too much attention. Some may find it slow to focus but a long as it does it well, it does not affect me.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I, had been wanting a Macro lens for years. Looking at them and finally decided on the Sigma. As I have a Sigma 24-70 3.5 and get really clear sharp shots with it. Nothing but good reviews about Sigma and so I decided on it.
The minute I put it on the camera and took a shot, I was very pleased with it! It's now my favorite lens!
Will add, That lens hood attaches to the circular polarizer and makes it real easy to adjust with lens hood.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I bought this lens for my food blog. Previously used a fixed 50mm 1.8 canon and it didn't get the close up detail of the food I wanted, so I looked into a macro. I'd used the sigma 30mm and loooved it, so I decided to look into a sigma macro. This lens got a fantastic review by Popular Photography, and it's well deserved. Great, sturdy lens awesome results. The only con: since it's a macro and 70mm, it's not the best for low light. Overall, very happy!

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I've only used it for macro so far and the images are superb. It's definitely slower to focus compared to my L series lens, but using the limit feature does help. I had one other Sigma lens and was not very impressed, but based on other reviews I decided to give this lens a try. So far, I'm glad I did.

I did a lot of homework before I made this purchase and it sure paid off. This lens is extremely sharp, has excellent contrast and color correction and lives up to advertising. The auto focus is a bit slow but the limit switch helps to solve this. When using the auto focus it's dead on every time! Very happy with my purchase and highly recommend this product.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I bought this lens on a whim, while shopping for a totally different type of lens that would serve a completely different purpose. It wasn't because they were related, it was purely because of the quality of the sample pictures, the usefulness of the Macro from photo projects, the opportunity to learn something new, and how sharp the lens was reported to be.

This lens is very sharp, and a very good macro on a crop-body DSLR.

It's well constructed, with large elements, and it's very accurate whether auto or manual focusing.

The Auto-focus is a little slow, with hunting being an issue more than I'd like, but I have been using it exclusively for Macro photography which means that I usually have it set to Manual for the sharpest focusing anyways.

One thing that I did not understand fully before buying this lens is that it focuses very differently from any other Macro that I've seen. This lens can achieve a maximum scale of 1:1 for macro subjects, which is very good- but it does it by pushing the lens out of the lens-body in scale-intervals, to achieve the focus, and depending on how close you are to your subject, it is possible to invade the scene with the lens.

All of the pictures that I have shot with this lens have been exactly as I've expected them to be, vibrant and sharp from corner to corner, even wide open. While I don't have have a full-frame camera, I've read that it's the same when the whole glass is used as well.

I don't expect that this lens is any more challenging to learn than any other Macro lens is, and as a result wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who was shopping for one.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I use this lens for macro and portrait. For 1.6x crop sensor, this lens is in perfect range, especially for portrait. The f2.8 also offers a great background blur for candid shots. The image taken is SUPER sharp! Definitely a good alternative for expansive canon 100mm f2.8. But you get what you pay for. I am really not used to the lens without USM motor. The focus is too slow and noisy. But it is not as heavy.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

Is an optically perfect lens with no distortion, chromatic aberrations almost imperceptible, very sharp, easily equated to one of the sharpest lenses I've used: Canon 90mm 2.8 TS. And very nice and soft bokeh too.

The speed of the auto focus is not so slow if used with the limiter, and it's very accurate, do the job perfectly for portraits, fashion... The little noise it's not a problem for me. The only bad point, I found is that you can not use the lens cap and hood at the same time.

70mm it's an interesting focal length for a prime lens.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I needed a lens for copying artwork, did some homework and ordered the Sigma 85mm f1.4, which is a good lens but soft on the corners, even at 5.6/f8. Did some more homework and the Sigma 70mm surfaced as a better lens for what I needed, so ordered one, did a comparison, and returned the 85mm. The 70mm is sharper than the 85mm in the Center, and blows the 85mm out of the water on the edges, and has quite a bit less lateral CA also. It doesn't have the narrow DOF of the 85mm, and the focusing is sloow(but veeerrrry accurate). It's for use mainly in the studio for, art, portrait, and product photography so I don't see the slow focusing as a problem. Seems solid and well built. Highly recommended for sharpness, color, good contrast, low CA. From what I've read, and from my initial testing, its one of the sharpest lenses around.

Lens cover won't attach with the hood on, which is strange, but I'll buy one that fits over the end of the hood.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I have had this lens for 2 weeks and have taken over 2000 photos with it, mostly of flora native to South Texas. The lens is slow to focus unless you use the limit feature. Photos do come out sharp and consistent. It does allow you to get the small detail found in many of the flowers, leaves, seeds, and fruit of plants. I have been able to use most of these photos for Identification and educational functions

The 1:1 ratio makes your subject a lot larger than I thought it would once you have the photo on a computer screen.

Comments about Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS:

I use this lens for both portrature and freehand macro shooting. For both uses it is exceptionally sharp. For those who use a focus rail in their macro photography you should be aware that the front element moves a considerable distance. Other complaints would be an old fashioned style manual/auto focus system where the manual focus ring can't be used when AF is on. I did see some slight purple fringing around the highlights of some silver oboe keys in the portrait af an oboe player, but that is the only example of CA's that I have seen with this lens. Also when extreme changes are made in focus distances the AF can get confused. This has never been a problem in the portrait studio however. Those issues aside the image quality is excellent and the focal length is good for the aps-c sensor, plus it can be used on a full frame sensor.
