If you are looking at this lens you are looking at the perfect alternative to the 70-200mm 2.8 for half the price. Note: if you shoot or plan to shoot a lot and I mean a lot of low light work then stop here and go buy the 2.8 version. Marking this lens down and comparing it to that lens is insane; buy that lens and mark it down. Two different products!
For those of you not making 2.8 money and shoot a wider range of light, not a whole lot of low light work, or you own a flash and know how to control it, you will be very happy with this lens. Believe me when I say I wanted the 2.8 version however; like most semi-pro photographers money is limited and I wanted to eat and have a roof over my head for the next few months while getting the shots I need.
I needed the reach and performance of that 2.8 without the price and this lens is it. This lens is smaller and lighter than the 2.8 which makes it nice to carry around all day especially if you are a location type photographer. It fits in my sling bag mounted to the camera (barely) keeping my load light. The lens performs excellent on my 40D and yes the IS does talk to you however; you begin to use the sound when focusing on the fly. Image quality is amazing, it made me wish I had purchased this lens sooner and I have no regrets not buying the 2.8 version. The colors come out amazing and the CA coating reduces noise seen from cropped sensor cameras . Sports Photographers will not be disappointed, I was able to shoot paraglider's from a cliff the other day and the color and sharpness at 200mm F/4 w/o a UV filter or tripod is amazing. Post processing was minimal in Lr and the prints were ready in no time. In addition, I have used this lens indoors with one 430EXII flash mounted on an umbrella combined with natural light and the shots came out just as good as being outside.
The lens comes with a hood, lens bag/pouch ( I don't like it) and no tripod ring. At first, I thought I needed that ring however; I would say it depends on what you are shooting and the size of your camera. I have the 40D with the battery pack bottom and the camera feels well balanced when this lens is mounted. I imagine if you did not have the battery pack it would feel a bit more front heavy but still manageable. If you own a smaller camera or will be shooting a lot in one day then consider the tripod ring. I was able to mount my camera using the stock camera mount with lens looking straight down and the tripod did not flip over so, I still do not need the ring. This lens is compatible with the Canon EF Extenders 2x and 4x along with the EF25II and EF12II Extension tubes. I have used it with the EF25II Extension tube and the zoom capability and image quality for macro work is amazing. You can shoot bugs at a nice distance without disturbing them and still get that close up detail. The lens comes with a manual explaining the F-stop loss using the Extenders 2x and 4x. Overall, the F-Stop loss is too great for me when starting at F/4 however; that depends on what you are shooting and the availability of light.
I did not buy this lens at B&H, I was able to buy it in new condition from another photographer who barely used it in her work flow and put it in a closet for 8-9 months. That is why I suggest taking a serious assessment of your current work flow before buying any lens. It is a lot of money to just put in a closet for 8-9months. I use this lens constantly know that I have it and I only take it off for wide angle shots. I hope this helps, I wanted to keep it short yet provide you with information that would help you make the best choice when buying this lens.

There is a major manufacturing defect with this lense
You can not focus this lens manually if you point it up at more than 45 degrees.
I've tried several of these lenses and have had the same bad results.
Canon WILL NOT take responsibility for it if you don't notice it within your warranty period.
Double check you lense for this issue and return it!!!
Canon does not consider it a manufacturing flaw , even though it obviosly is.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This is the best L series lens that I own. The pictures are very sharp with wide open aperture. I mainly got this lens for my landscape photography but the IS was very handy at a recent wedding event. It does make a cranky noise from time to time and the autofocus is noticeably slower than its big brother f/2.8. I don't own f/2.8 I just happened to shot few shots at the store and noticed the enormous weight. Compare to that this lens is very light and well built, awesome lens to have.

After searching for a good quality lens over a months, i came across this lens. The build quality of the lens is amazing.

I started taking pictures to evaluate the performance and to my surprise, this lens met my expectation. Perhaps, IS and USM is the main driving factor for stable images.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I rented the newer IS II lens a while back for filming a church retreat. It was so big and cumbersome that I just could not 'run n gun' with it at all. This lens is another beast all it's own - lightweight, sharp as a tack focus, FAST focus, great clarity, beautiful DOF - it's just perfect for what I do, which is video production. I have done one interview with this lens, and I'll just say that it is a world of difference in the look I am getting. Just terrific. I am pairing it with a Canon 60D for photos and video and with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera fitted with the Metabones EF to BMPCC Speed Booster. It basically makes this an f2 lens instead of an f4, and it's quite unbelievable. I plan on buying another one of these soon to complement my gear and have even more creative possibilities. B&H - always great to work with. Fast delivery, great notifications - all the best as usual.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Picture quality with a 70-200 is much better than the 18-135 kit lens which came with my 70D. The disadvantages are the length and weight of the lens. Also occasionally the auto focus feels a bit slower than the 18-135. That being said, considering the alternatives, the 70-200 F4 IS lens is a great product with reasonable price and I strongly recommend it.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have used this lens for a few days now. Shot a bicycle event in very harsh sunlight, sunset sailboat races and twilight conditions . Surprising quality at such light weight. Very sharp at all apertures. Great contrast and color. I didn't have a lens hood on in some backlit and sidelit situations and had minimal lens flare. I used auto focus on tracking mode for a while and it worked well. Image stabilization doesn't seem as effective as on another lens I have so will have to watch that. Much lighter and smaller than the 2.8 version of this focal length. The constant aperture throughout the zoom range is nice for video work especially sports and action when a zoom is often necessary in a shot. I am glad I picked the f4 over the f2.8 as it is much easier to lug around, and much easier to handhold for long periods of time. Another photographer at an event yesterday had the 2.8 and was complaining about the weight. If you really shoot low light situations handheld often, then the 2.8 would be better offering the extra stop. But I am fine with the f4. No regrets on choosing the f4.

Used mostly for wildlife photography. This lens is extremely sharp, event with enlargements of photos taken at its maximum aperture of 4.0. Adjustments are extremely smooth and the moving parts well sealed against the elements. Considering the focal length the lens is quite light. Focusing is fast and accurate and there is no lens creep.

I cannot think of anything that is not great about this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

First the good news: this is an excellent, sharp, lightweight lens. I chose to add it to fill the gap between the 24-105mm and my prime 300mm. It is a good "street" lens on my 5d Mk III for grabbing detail shots and close-ups without the weight of its big brother, the f2.8. The not-so-good news for me was that out of the box it frequently failed to autofocus correctly (or in some cases, at all). When manually focusing first and then comparing the autofocus, it produced soft shots. Instead of returning it to B&H, I sent it to Canon Factory Service. They had to repair the USM/AF assembly and recalibrate it — now it is fine and as it should have been, but for a lack of quality control on Canon's part. The turn around was one week, but the end result is better and faster than rolling the dice on an exchange. So far, I'm glad to have it in the collection.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I've been trying to add to my gear over the years for my wedding lens arsenal, and I had been meaning to purchase this lens for quite some time.....I don't know WHY I waited. This lens fits beautifully into a problematic hole I had -- needed more reach so I could remain "in the background". This lens does it. Buy it, you won't regret it!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This is definitely one of my favorite lenses. It's incredibly well built, optically amazing and nice and light.

The thing that really sets it apart for me though, is the IS. It's advertised at 4 stops. And I've successfully captured 200mm shots at as low as 1/10 second shutter. It's loud, but it's incredibly capable.

Given the weight difference (nearly 750 grams, 2x the weight) and the marginal optical difference, this is, to me, the clear winner over the 2.8 IS ii.

The only downside in my experience is that the auto-focus is a little bit on the slow side. Still way faster than commodity lenses, but doesn't have the same snap as other L lenses.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

After a lot of research, I chose this lens over the f/2.8 version. Its weight and size lends itself to carrying on planes, lugging around in a backpack for landscape photography. I have used it for portraits and I am completely satisfied. It is tack sharp and light enough that it doesn't tire me out.

Panning and tracking shots of fast moving cars. Had NON-IS before and was struggling with sharpness, this lens fixed that problem somewhat.
