Here's my experience with the P-3000 thus far...

My wife & I just got back from a trip to China (Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai over 10 days. My wife was shooting with a Nikon D300 taking both RAW and JPG files for each shot. I was using my Sony HDR-HC7 taking both video and stills (stills at fine resolution). With both shot each day like there was no tomorrow. I could often here my wife taking advantage of the rapid shot capability of the D300. We download files each night (well almost each night) to the P-3000.

The P-3000 took the 4GB Compact Flash card from the D300 and downloaded them in less than 5 minutes. I'm not doing a timing of downloads, etc., just sharing our experiences (after 10 hours of speed walking to keep up with our tour group, I had better things to do than watch files download). I needed an adapter for my Sony due to their typical proprietary memory cards. I used the 17 IN 1 CARD to CF ADAPTER also purchased from B&H. The adapter worked fine and downloaded to 2GB Sony memory sticks just fine. We usually ran thru 2-3 of the 4GB cards and 2 of the 2GB cards each day.

When the trip was over, we had used up 26.4GB of the total 36.0 GB available. My wife has already downloaded her pics to an external hard drive she uses. She had no problems in the transfer. I'm still suffering from jet lag and a nasty cold that showed up 2 days after we got home, so that task yet remains for me.

We charged the P-3000 once during our trip as the battery was down to about 40%. As I look at the P-3000 now it is showing about 80% of the charge left.

We did not carry the P-3000 with us during the day since it is some what bulky and the case it came with provides no shock protection (it remained in our room safe each day). On the plane flights, I packed it in my suitcase that was checked wedged between clothes and it survived just fine. Since I didn't have it on the plane and was limited in time each day (run, run run) I didn't take much time to play with it. Both my wife and I are very satisfied with the display of our images The latest firmware upgrade was needed to view the D300 RAW files which was a bit tedious, but worked fine.

Our use has been limited to downloading images that went directly into a section the P-3000 calls the Backup Files section on the menu. Each download is listed by date and each download on that date (ie..20090409.001) which would be files downloaded on April 4, 2009, first card. Once you create the Backup Files set you can move the images to other directories in the 'My Video' section and create your own directories. I test tried doing it once and succeeded, but that capability was not used by us this trip.

I downloaded one movie (Leathernecks) from my computer to test what a video looked like. Image quality is excellent, but the volume provided by the P-3000 is barely adequate. Using my Bose Acoustic Noise Canceling headphones, I suppose I could have listed to the movie on the plane or in a moderately noisy place, but barely. Using the speaker on the P-300 would not work well in a moderately noisy place.

My experience with the video also covers any use of the P-3000 for mp3 music files...just not enough volume. However, we did not buy the P-3000 to watch movies or listen to music, but to store and view images and it works fine for that purpose.

Our previous experience has been with a Picture-Pad by Delkin that we have owned for nearly 12 years. While not in the same ball park as the P-3000 in speed of download and quality of viewing, it has survived many trips around the world by both us and by others we loaned it too. The only reason we upgraded is the adapter for the odious Sony cards no longer works and Delkin ceased making the product over 6 years. Storage capacity is the same as the P-3000. If the P-3000 lasts as long and survives as many trips as the Picture Pad, I will be thrilled with it.

Things that are missing from the P-3000 are:

1. Lack of high quality carrying case that provides shock protection. There is an accessory case you can buy for about $100 more along with a few other gadgets, but for the price you pay, something much better should have been provided for a case.

2. The menu system on the P-3000 is simple, but tedious to use. To perform tasks, you end up pushing the various buttons available many times as you drill down the menu system.

3. For any audio use of the P-3000, the audio quality and volume need significant improvement. I would not recommend the P-3000 if this is your primary reason for buying the product.

4. It would nice if the outer surface of the camera was not all slick and polished, but rather had a nice nubby. rubber exterior. When I'm holding a $500+ device with a hard drive in it like the P-3000, I want to feel sure I'm not going to drop it.

SUMMARY

The P-3000 is an excellent device to store and view photo images on while you use it in the field. It's download of images is very fast and at least for one trip, it saved our images from any loss.

As a device to share your videos or pictures it needs improvement. Showing videos suffers from lack of adequate audio volume. Passing the P-3000 around a group of people to view your photos would be nerve racking...it's just too easy to drop.

Better sound and exterior surface would have given the P-3000 a 5 star from me.

I purchased this product just for a vacation trip and don't want to bring too many memory cards. After comparing net-book and P-3000 and reading many reviews, I finally went to P-3000. One major reason is that P-3000 is more mobile and dedicated quality image viewer that can directly read memory cards with camera raw format.

Another thing I like best is the easy use interfaces that is intuitive and user-friendly. The image quality is awesome and 100% zoom is wonderful.

But I have couple of things must be pointed out here about this product.

1. When you want to delete files, the select all choices is not easily found. It is buried in the menus.
2. If the file name is not in the same language as the menu, the file name won't be shown correctly. Maybe Epson already fixed this problem in new released firmware. But mine still has this issue.
3. It is too bulky. It doesn't look like electronic product in this century. Why can't Epson make it slim and light-weighted?

I am a college photography teacher that takes students to Italy for 9 days during Spring Break. The Epson P-3000 was the missing link for reviewing their daily photographic efforts. It reads both SD and CF cards and will display RAW as well as JPEG files - and it does so quite fast - on a bright and accurate color 4 inch screen. Furthermore, we can selectively choose images, save them to a new folder and show them in the evening though a digital projector. Highly recommended.

Comments about Epson P-3000 Multimedia Photo Viewer:

The Epson photo viewer allows me to instantly view and confirm pictures while I'm taking them. I have a small net book that I used to use to transfer pictures in the field but it takes time to boot up. The Epson viewer is very fast in booting up and backs up my compact flash cards automatically. The viewer allows a 400 times magnification so I can check details of photos to make sure I got the shot. The viewer is small and light so it fits in my small grab bag so its always ready to go. The built in slide shows are also fun when sharing the photos. Excellent investment!

this is a great tool and a good substitute for buying multiple cards. you have a larger screen than the usual 3" camera and you can view and delete before you download to your computer. the compact size helps avoid carrying a laptop everytime. i got the 80gb version since i didn't see a need for more than that...wish the screen was higher resolution or HD.

Comments about Epson P-3000 Multimedia Photo Viewer:

I have had previous model and it has been bullet-proof. When I needed to add a second to my bag, no failures from previous models in the field made the decision to buy this newer model easy.
This one transfers the files quickly, and the menu is easy to navigate.
The battery life seems to be slightly improved, but this may be due to the unit being new. Or, because it takes half the time to transfer a card, increasing the total number of data you can transfer before charging.
The only thing I do not like is that it is slightly larger than the previous model. I would rater have the smaller screen, then the extra size.

A little bulky, and not enough memory, but very nice screen and functionality. Starts up quickly, and navigates smothly.

I use the P-3000 mostly as a storage system. It enables me to review the day's shooting and provides a must have backup system. It easily downloads to my computer. The resolution of the pictures is excellent. It is a bit heavy to carry around so usually I leave it at the hotel and transfer the pictures that night. Excellent product. I am a serious amateur photographer.

Comments about Epson P-3000 Multimedia Photo Viewer:

Great for travel to store and review images. Was a little larger than I suspected but is not a problem. Easy to set up and works as it is supposed to. I have only had this item for a few weeks and have not put it through all the paces but so far I am very pleased with this product.

I got this viewer to backup my photos on the road and view the photos. The LCD is high enough quality that I can delete bad shots on the road. I can also use it to show friends and family my photos. Well worth the money, if you get the rebate.

Comments about Epson P-3000 Multimedia Photo Viewer:

This unit is great: easy to get used to, easy to navigate through, great resolution, sturdy, does everything (in transfers ) except copy back to the card; but that's unnecessary anyway because I was trying to free up my cards in the first place. Seriously, this storage/playback unit is now an integral part of my photographic system. I shoot with a D300 with all 2.8 lenses and this does everything justice.

I bought the P-3000 so I would be able to store and review photos on trips, so I could make sure camera settings achieve the desired exposures. This is especially important on dive trips given the additional challenge of underwater photos. The display is unbelievably clear and sharp. As an added bonus, the P-3000 works great to display photos on my tv.
