Comments about Sekonic L-758Cine DigitalMaster Light Meter:

I almost got the l-758dr but I figured what the heck, get the Cene version and have it all. I am primarily a stills person but am moving into video more and more. If you need one light meter, this is it. I also have the Sekonic L-308s which is nice but the L-758Cine is awesome.

The Cine has expanded options so it may be a little confusing at first because you can find yourself measure foot candles when you just want to meter for a photo. You have to get use to having the extra options. Something to be aware of but not concerned about.

I like the ability to see the percentage of flash being used in my photo and also being able to measure my light ratios in meter.

Measuring LUX is a plus for me too.

Comments about Sekonic L-758Cine DigitalMaster Light Meter:

First of all, I am not really a DP or gaffer, but we are currently using a Sony FS7 and Atomos Shogun on indie film, so we have a bunch of exposure tools at our disposal. We use the Sekonic more for determining where we might want to add a little more light. For example, when actors are entering an indoor setup from outside and there is a huge light differential, and we need to add some indoor lights to balance the exposure. The Sekonic takes out the guess work. Like another reviewer said, for Stedicam shots, mostly indoors, it can be useful too. It's a good tool. I know how to set profiles, but I haven't done it. For what we use it for, we could have probably bought a much cheaper, less featured model, but maybe we'll use the other features it offers one day. It's pretty much all plastic construction, and quite expensive, so you'd think there would be some carbon fiber or aluminum, but no. Ours gets treated very gently; it might not fair well in a rough environment. It has a very long neck lanyard. I'm glad it has it, and you need a long one so you can get it away from your body to measure the light source, but an elasticated lanyard or one that recoils would be better. It hangs off my neck about 2 feet and bangs on everything when you lean over something. You can tie a knot in the lanyard to make it shorter, but then you may have to take it off to measure your light. All very minor annoyances, but worth noting on an otherwise fine product. I'm also not very big on having to press multiple button combinations at the same time while spinning the dial to access setting and to change them, but that's cost savings for manufacturers. suppose you could argue, that you are essentially dealing with no more than 3 or 4 parameters, but a couple more dedicated buttons wouldn't hurt.

Comments about Sekonic L-758Cine DigitalMaster Light Meter:

Although today's on-camera exposure systems are very sophisticated, they really only address "most situations". They are ideal for that "quick shot" or for that photo that is "good enough" to put in your album. With experience, a photographer can improve his/her success dramatically but there are many situations where more precision is needed ... for that artistic shot or for a must-have photo you can only take in a scene with very bright sunlight areas and very dark shadows. The L-758 series is perfect for this kind of situation.

The L-758Cine offers you the ability to measure and record measurements of up to 9 areas of your scene and to plot those measurements on an exposure scale (EV), along with the useful exposure range for your camera (more on this in a bit). From this, you can tell which points are "blown out", which are underexposed, and where the others will fall within the exposure range (black, dark, mid-range, light, white). The relevant display on the meter looks something like this:

        ... I ^ ^ I I I ^ I III I ^^ I ....

The five "^" marks relate to your camera's sensor. The middle "^" designates the point where the sensor records middle gray. The outermost "^" marks represent the dynamic range of your camera's sensor. Any exposure left of the leftmost mark will be black. Anything to the right of the rightmost "^" will be white. No details. The inner pair of "^" marks represent the ... well, lets call it the "useful range" or your camera ... the range outside of which you do not see much, if any, detail. In this example, the rightmost "I" is outside the dynamic range of your camera and will be white. The leftmost "I" would be black. No detail will be visible for either of these. The remaining "I" samples are within the useful range. Detail in those areas will be visible in the exposure.

Matching the meter to your camera is relatively straightforward. The software provided makes this almost easy. You need a target (which is purchased separately). First you take a series of photographs of and measurements from the target. You then use the software to process the images to compute your camera's profile and load that profile into the meter. This puts the "^" marks in the right place. If you don't want to go through this process, the meter does come loaded with a generic profile, which may do well enough for your purposes, but this procedure provides a path to additional accuracy.

This meter can be used in other, much more straightforward ways. You can use it , for example, as a spot meter for shutter-preferred or aperture-preferred measurments. And, of course, you can use it as an incident light meter. It is also useful for video, which may be it's strength. I am not a video photographer, though, so I have no experience to share in that application. I use the meter as described above.

I find this meter is easy to use and it does everything I could want. The meter itself is a fine piece of hardware. The user's manual is fine for the simpler functions but is definitely lacking in clarity for the some of the "advanced" functions … in particular, those relating to the use of camera profiles. The documentation for building and loading the profiles is good but the documentation for using them, while it should be simple, is not. It may improve, though, as new versions are put on the web.

I strongly recommend this product. It is worth struggling through the manual. It may be worth noting that a number of books on exposure use this product in their presentation. Enjoy.

I use this for both photography and video, and it is a very useful meter. I am disappointed that it does not come with the exposure target II which is needed for optimal use, or the pocket wizard transmitter. The features are seemingly endless, so it is a very good investment.

Comments about Sekonic L-758Cine DigitalMaster Light Meter:

This light meter is great. Easy to use (especially following Sekonic's youtube video for easy set up, and then reading the manual to find specific functions).

The bigger brother of the 758 DR. It DOES work with flash photography which is a plus if you do both still and motion capture. You can also purchase a SEPARATE Pocket Wizard trigger so you don't have to connect a dumb trigger to it.

If you're shooting a lot of slow motion and need to overcrank (Think PHANTOM), this will give you the option to do that. If you have a big need for that, this is the main reason in my opinion to get this light meter. Otherwise, for motion, you can get away with using pretty much anything else on the market if you're just looking to get readings to set your light ratios correctly.

But take my advice on this - if you're in the market for a light meter - just get one, any one. Don't let the higher price of this one stop you from taking a step up in your cinematography game.

Comments about Sekonic L-758Cine DigitalMaster Light Meter:

I've been dying to own this meter for years and have rented or borrowed it (and it's precursor---I think there was a previous version that, like the L-758, has both a full sized incident meter as well as spot)... With motion picture cameras having histograms now, I hear certain people saying they don't meter anymore... I've worked on several professional shoots where the DP and gaffers don't even bring them anymore. They light by the monitor and through the camera and checking the histogram. True...but when I'm on steadicam, there is nothing more annoying than having to go through every room and pointing the camera at the windows and shadows and whatnot just b/c the someone didn't bring a meter. A camera on steadicam is a 60 lb lightmeter, which is ridiculous. It's just impractical, and with my own cinematography, I've found I work with much more nuance having a meter and having to use 2 meters is what I was doing before buying this and I too would often leave the meter at home b/c it's just more awkward having to carry around both an incident and a reflected meter.

There are 2 littles disappointment though, that kind of annoys me a lot (but I won't be returning b/c there is no other meter that does what this one does) and that's that the cap does not always stay securely on it and when it's off, it's dangle-y, but removing that string holding it on would lead to it inevitably getting lost. Also, case is kind of floppy (not really sturdy) for something in this price range. I'll probably be spending an extra $50 or whatever for the Arri pouch for it soon. This pouch is really big, b/c of the shape of the meter---it would be nice for a form fitting shape, not a big rectangle to hold something roughly cross shaped (the protruding parts of the spot meter)... Also, it would be nice if the pouch stored it vertical, not horizontal...as big as it is, it would rest a little less awkwardly upright.

I've found it to be a slightly awkward shaped meter, but it's so much less awkward than having two, and this meter will work for several years into the future.

Comments about Sekonic L-758Cine DigitalMaster Light Meter:

The line between the L-758Cine and a Spektra lies in your desire to calculate.

I have used both for exposing film and digital and found them both to be accurate. What I like(and have paid much extra for) about the L-758 is that it removes the mental calculations that I constantly did when thinking in foot candles.

If you don't know the calculations I am referring to, you maybe should start off with a cheaper meter to get the basics down.

Great build quality and simple to operate. This meter can do just about everything you ask of it. Variable frame rates is very handy, but for most 1000fps may seem outrageous. If you have the money buy this hands down, otherwise the 558c and 608c are just fine.

I haven't been able to use it on many projects yet. I'm just now learning how to use light meters in general. The interface is really easy to use. The functions are plentiful. I DO wish it had color metering built in.

im a film student at the university of new orleans and i gaff a lot of our student projects. its very usefull with haveing two iso setting and different screen layout opitions. you can also use the meter as a flash meter so it can be used for still photography and the fact that its both a indecent and a relfective meter combined saves space its well built and ive had noproblems with it
