OK, so it's not my first tripod. I had a cheap one years ago and it self-destructed at the leg locks. I also have a hand-me-down metal and aluminum-legged boat anchor of a tripod which is indestructible, stable and lacks everything else you might want in a tripod. By comparison, the 190XPROB is both light (not lightweight) and agile. In addition to adjusting leg lengths for uneven surfaces, you can adjust the leg angles individually for more impossible positioning or to get really close to the ground. The center post raises, but also swings quickly into horizontal in seconds. This is handy if you are shooting from a seated position or need to shoot over a table. It can also work in concert with the legs fully extended and locked at the max angle and with whatever head you are using to get insanely low with camera facing down. I paired my tripod with a 324RC2 Ball Head with joystick control and I am real happy with them both. I can set up shots at all sorts of angles and when zero motion is critical. I intend to take close up shots of model train layouts. The horizontal feature will get my camera right down in the action and stable for those long depth of field shots. Unfortunately the tripod does not come with a bag or sling, and if you like spiked feet, that'll be an extra purchase too. The tripod has built-in attachment points for a sling as well as a hook for weight, and a bubble level. I use a backpack camera bag, and with a head attached the tripod's a bit too long to carry underneath, but attached vertically might work. I could have shaved some weight off the pair with a carbon fiber tripod and magnesium head, but that would have nearly doubled the price, so I sacrificed the weight difference and still ended up with an awesome and necessary addition to my gear. On my next vacation I'm taking the 190XPROB with me and leaving my wife at home.

I purcheased this tripod 4 years ago and in the beginning I thought it was the best, then I found about a known design flaw, (at least it was known to my local camera equipment shop), Part R190,518 and R190,506, this is the knob that tightens the center post to keep it raised in place and the inner workings of it. I've now had to replace these units 2 times, no reason other than it wears so quickly from general light use. My local shop actually keeps these parts on hand due to the fact that they have such a call for them from people needing to replace them so frequently. (hmmmmmmm frequent worn parts, please don't tell me that Manfrotto doens't know about this). Now if you only use your tripod once every 6 months then it's a great tripod, but I don't need to keep thinking that I'll be out hiking someplace and have this fail on me (yes I am now keeping a spare set of parts with me to fix the problem on the run if necessary). Past that, it is a great concept, I love the ability to use this in so many different locations and in so many configurations, if Manfrotto would either have someone design a work around or true fix to the problem above I could give this a 5 star rating, but since there doesn't seem to be anything going on with this problem other than being told that I should upgrade to the 055xprob which is heavier, I will keep my rating where it is at.

Comments about Manfrotto 190XPROB Pro Aluminum Tripod:

as a novice i bought this at the urging of an experienced photographer. I did not want to spend that much on it but I am VERY glad I did. Sturdy, easy to use and it fits into my travel suitcase with no problem. Well worth the money. I threw away the lightweight plastic tripod that was too hard to use , not as sturdy and a general pain.

I use this tripod for a variety of different types of shots, and works well for all of them! It might be a little heavy/large for long hikes, but I do not mind, especially for this price range. If your main genre of shots are landscape, you might consider another model.

This is my travel video tripod (use with DSLR and MVH500 head). It's reasonably light and compact but it has a few faults: first, one of the legs is about 1" shorter than the others, so it's never level on a level surface. Second, the center column does not extend smoothly. The mechanism that allows the center to pivot 90 degrees seems a little loose at times, an unusual design to be sure. But once it's set up and locked in, it does what I need.

Reasonable price, sturdy. I think this is unbreakable.

I purchased this as a second tripod because I was traveling by car and flying home so I could leave it with my friend and she'll bring it back to me. I loved using this tripod. It is much lighter and not as long (not extended) as my other tripod. It supported the weight of my camera and lenses. It was on sale when I purchased it (instant rebate) so it was $[$] well spent! I can hardly wait to get it back in the spring! I did not want to pay an extra baggage charge for it!

Worked well for me, until it broke :(

I'm not sure how tough these types of tripods are supposed to be, but one of the pieces (a smaller one from the end extenders) that holds the leg lock to the shaft broke. I was walking along a wooded path and didn't realize I was on ice until it was too late. There was nothing mounted on the tripod, I was carrying it in one hand to another area, and slipped. The tripod was folded with the legs extended, and it fell onto the hard ice, where the piece broke. All three smaller locking mechanisms are also loose when not locked in (they move side to side, which doesn't happen with the larger locks). They still lock, but when not locked they seem VERY loose, as if they are permanently loose. I'm not sure if this is covered by the warranty, and I've been reading about long service times for products sent away for repair. There is a website that sells replacement parts (the one I need is R190,499) which might be the quickest option. An accident, of course, but I wouldn't have thought a metal piece would break that easily. The cold may have made it more brittle though. Bottom line: don't drop it!
