This isn't a lightweight lens but it's on my Olympus e-600 90% of the time. I use it for both tele-macro shots (I shoot butterflies) and zoom images and it's pretty much my go-to lens. Its focusing is reasonably fast, zoom action is very smooth, and it can give you a 2:1 view at about 3 feet (somewhat closer if you switch it to manual focus). It will hunt for focus in shady areas - and it requires a LOT of light, it's not a fast lens overall - but it is razor sharp and delivers a very nice bokeh when used for macro purposes.
I called it the "forgotten" lens because most Oly shooters will want the 12-60 and the 50-200 lenses, both of them being faster than this lens - at twice to three times the price. For the money, this lens delivers very, VERY good images if one can work within its light requirements. I handhold this lens exclusively - I do not recommend ISO 100 except on the brightest of sunny days. Generally, to handhold this you'll need anywhere between ISO 200 to 800. Noise on my Oly E-600 is very good up to ISO 1600 so I have no issue with using the higher ISO's with this lens.
It connects quickly and easily to the camera, its build is very sturdy, and I would buy this lens again in a heartbeat if I ever broke mine.

I bought this lens for taking photos of birds and other animals. I also own a 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 SWD lens, which is a wonderful lens but just too heavy and bulky to be carried around. The 70-300mm lens is a good substitute. The image quality is good. The downside is the autofocus. It just does not function well under slightly low light conditions when I used the 300mm end. Sometimes it does not even work under ambient light. It hunts back and forth, then stops at the wrong focal plane. Way far away from the correct focus. It seems autofocus only works well under very good lighting or one has to use an external flash like Olympus FL-36 as focus aid. Another thing I don't like this lens is the lens hood. It is very hard to take it off unless you mount the lens on a camera first.

Comments about 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Zuiko ED Zoom Lens for Olympus Digital Cameras (Four Thirds System):

This lense is great for wild life and sports photography. It is a great value. even considering the micro converter needed for my Pen PL-1. However I would recomend tripod or monopod mounting to support the camera since the lense is relatively large and heavy compared to other lenses normally used. Would have prefered a similiar lense using the micro 4/3 system and at 75-250mm.

Work fine with E-M5

Comments about 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Zuiko ED Zoom Lens for Olympus Digital Cameras (Four Thirds System):

Work with E-M5 with MMF-3 adapter provide all most same result against Panasonic Lumix 100-300mm f/4.0-5.6 G Vario Aspherical MEGA OIS Lens except:1. no viewfinder image stabilization - it's a issue but did not reflect result if you can handle your target in correct position in viewfinder.2. focus is slow to bad if select all focus point. But improved after changed to one focus point. in this case, focus speed still slower than Panasonic but within one sec.3. With lens holder - OMG. it's really good for Olympus lens (anyway, all know this lens came from another maker)4. Compared with price, this is a good lens except to catch fast moving object.

Works well with my E620, best in good light, focus sometimes hunts when I handhold and use a single focus point. Like the AF/Mf switch, Manual focus works well. Very happy with my pictures, have taken some very good pictures of birds with this lens

Comments about 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Zuiko ED Zoom Lens for Olympus Digital Cameras (Four Thirds System):

I had originally considered the 50-200mm high grade lens, but I really wanted something a little more powerful in the telephoto aspect for outdoor work,( i.e. sports, nature and scenics ).Decided to gamble on a used 70-300mm for a lot less $ than the 50-200. Kudos to B&H. Although described cosmetically as a 9, I was hard pressed to find any signs of wear or tear. Yes, the lens is heavy and on the large size, but that's what I prefer to have on the front of my E-3. I've held too many other cameras that feel like cheap plastic toys and with my E-3,12-60mm and now the 70-300mm lenses,I don't have to worry about carrying my gear around like breakable eggs when out in the field or inclement weather. Focus is not as fast as the 12-60mm, but I can live with that easily. ( I used to shoot weddings with manually focused cameras years ago before automatics came along ) Sharpness is satisfactory although I have'nt had the time to really put it to the test... so far, I like what I've seen. To sum it all up... glad I bought this lens, would do it again and will continue to do business with B&H.

I bought a refurbished lens that looks new to me at a significant price reduction. I can find no problems with it and it functions well. I have an Olympus E-410 and it fits in well with my other lenses.

Because the camera body is smaller, this lens requires a steady hand, but this trade-off is well worth the benefits.

I use the lens mostly for nature shots and people/portrait studies with a E620 and E3 Olympus camera.

The quality and sharpness of the lens is great in bright daylight and exceeded my expectations especially if the price is considered.

The focusing is a bit slow in low light conditions

A bit slow in low light but awsome with full sun. I have done some very nice macro work and I'm getting great close-ups of Humming birds.
